The service, unfortunately, was more memorable than the meal. Our server seemed quite overwhelmed and struggled to keep things on track. We did ask to switch servers, and the replacement was fantastic… briefly… until we were switched back again (cue instant regret).
The vibe is a 5/5 though – great live music, exceptional interiors and a well laid out bar!
One thing worth noting: some of the glowing reviews may be influenced by the free cheesecake they offer for leaving one, so it’s best to read with a bit of skepticism.
The jambalaya was good overall, but for New Orleans–style food, it was missing a little depth and seasoning. It wasn’t bad by any means, just not as bold or flavorful as I expected.
That said, the service was great—friendly, attentive, and welcoming, which made the experience enjoyable. With a bit more seasoning in the jambalaya, this place would really hit the mark. I’d definitely come back for the oysters and the atmosphere.
I was ready to have one more night of fun down Bourbon Street before my birthday weekend officially came to an end, and I really wanted to try out Blue Bayou for its famous grilled oysters. No complaints on the food; it was absolutely delicious! However, the service has much room for improvement.
While my partner and I were seated quickly, I could tell that the staff was scrambling over who would lead us to our table. Being seated near the entrance, I took note of the incoming parties who would have a more difficult time getting settled in–waiting far too long to be seated at a table, even though it was pretty early for dinner service (4:30-5pm on a Sunday). It was unpleasant to see how riled up the guests were getting by having to stand in cold, January winds before being taken care of.
My review isn’t low solely based on other people’s experiences, as this troubling service made itself known personally. Once my food was served, I didn’t see my waiter for a very long time. It took a while before he came over to bring the check. Also, he didn’t see all too enthused about serving us, with no bright introduction or charisma, making me feel like we were adding more to his burden.
I truly do understand that businesses can be hectic, and I don’t expect any overly cheerful greetings, but between the angry customers, apathetic waiter, and inconsistent service, eating at Blue Bayou felt like being boiled in a pressure cooker–waiting for someone’s lid to pop off.
Despite this, I would consider coming back here again to give the business another chance. I may have stumbled upon one of their not-so-good days. Besides, the food was so freaking delicious, I’d spend just a little more to have those oysters again! Still, I think visiting on a weekday (morning or early afternoon) would be best–for my peace of mind.
Also if you go there is not a cash option and they charge you 3% to use your credit card.
We were seated at the far end of the bar where they shucked oysters and where servers picked their oysters.
The ambiance was very nice and they had a live singer by the front door who was very entertaining.
It took about 10-15 mins until the server came and took our order. We ordered 2 waters, a coke and a dozen charboiled oysters. The gentleman shucking the oysters was very entertaining, it seemed like he was the only employee that enjoyed working there within the timeframe we were there. Now I must say the oysters were a 10/10. They were seasoned to perfection and at the right temperature.
Being that we were at the end of the bar we were right in the midst of conversations within employees. At one point it seems like there was some order mix up and that was the start of an ongoing back and forth argument for the rest of the duration of our dinner.
In the meantime we ordered 3 entrees. The shrimp and grits, the tour of New Orleans (gumbo, etoufee, jambalaya and rice and beans)as well as the blackened chicken pasta. Food took about 20 mins to come out which was reasonable however only 2 of the 3 entrees made it out. Our server never came back to check on us, we never got a refill on any drinks either. She was never aware that one of the entrees made it out until we asked for the check.
The shrimp had a lot of flavor but the grits weren’t seasoned, they lacked a sauce that one would normally expect with shrimp and grits. My tour of New Orleans was amazing 10/10. The jambalaya was by far the best I’ve ever had.
What bothered me the most out of the entire experience was the lack of awareness of the employees. There was name calling, cursing (including management), lots of back and forth within the employees for an extensive amount of time which made our experience not the most enjoyable. After all we were right there within 3ft of the commotion.
The gentleman that was shucking the oysters kept us entertained the entire time and apologized on many occasions about what was happening around us. Other than that the rest of the employees lacked so much on providing good service and an enjoyable experience.
