If you’re looking for “crafted” sandwiches that are “piled up” with ingredients, look no further than Lardo off Hawthorne! They have a decent selection for all taste buds, and a decent selection of beers to go with those sandwiches. In addition to the indoor seating, the outdoor patio is really nice and lets you enjoy the great weather along with your sandwich. I got the Mochiko Chicken & Waffles, which was the Chefwich at the time of our visit, while my mom got the Rhinestone Breakfast Burrito since it was around brunch-time. Both came split in half, so we shared to make sure we got to try both options, and both were amazing, with the chefwich being the perfect crunch with just the right balance of sweet and savory, while the Rhinestone had the best tortilla with fluffy eggs and flavorful pork.

Fantastic, rotating sandwich specials. Many meat heavy sandos the Pho Philly was delish, as was the No Meat balls. A few more veggie options but overall plenty of sides, drinks and spots to find what you like.

I think this place is very overrated for the sandwiches it serves. The cubano (although there was a lot of meat inside) just seemed a little flavourless? The beeria grilled cheese was better but also the same issue – it lacked flavour and was quite greasy. The lardo fries (ordered the dirty fries but was given the wrong order) were so salty – not sure if it was an off day but they were basically inedible. Unfortunately, I think these sandwiches photograph really well online, but in reality they are very average.
Also unsure why it is expected to leave a tip when the service is the equivalent of fast food restaurants (go up to order, get own drinks, clean up table). The only service that is provided is that the meal is brought to you.

You hear that name, Lardo, and you think, “Oh, that’s fun.” But it’s not just fun, it’s prophetic. Because they take these humble, beautiful ingredients and they turn them into… magic. I’m not kidding!
First, you walk in and the vibe is just…
Portland. It’s cool, it’s casual, everybody’s happy because they’re about to eat a great sandwich. And the menu?
Let’s start with the Dirty Fries. Oh, my god. You have to get these. It’s a mountain of perfect, crispy fries, but then… they put on fried pork scraps, chopped parsley, and this marinated pepper vinaigrette that just cuts through everything.
But then… the sandwiches, the Pork Meatball Banh Mi. This is why I travel! It’s this brilliant, beautiful mash-up. You have these incredibly savory, herby pork meatballs, right? But then they put it on this light, airy baguette with the classic pickled carrots and daikon, cilantro, and a spicy mayo. It’s like Italy and Vietnam had the most delicious baby right here in Portland. It’s messy, it’s perfect, you gotta eat it over the table because it’s gonna drip, and you’re gonna love every second of it.
So if you’re in Portland, you have to go to Lardo. Get the Dirty Fries to share-or don’t share, and get any sandwich that calls to you. You cannot make a bad choice.

Always a solid experience when I come here. This visit we had the Bronx Bomber, fries, and Korean pork shoulder over a salad. The food is well prepared and delicious.

I just went to Lardo 2 days in a row with my husband. We got 4 different sandwiches and still there remain a couple more sandwiches on the current menu we’d love to try. We had the Korean Pork Shoulder and BEERia Grilled Cheese the first day, with delicious Caldera Root Beer (which is not that easy to find if you love root beer you know). We split both and absolutely loved both but especially the Korean Pork Shoulder with Kimchi, it was perfection. Then the second day, I have been craving Falafel and Lardo’s Falafel Smash Burger with green zhoug was just on my mind, but unfortunately they were sold out of that so I had to make up my mind choosing between too many options – 3 at least strong contenders, but settled on the Smokey Cubano while my husband knew all along he wanted a favorite of his, the Bronx Bomber, which he has had before and found absolutely perfectly done. We got the Dirty Fries which are a meal unto themself – seriously – and we got Beers because the Lardo beer selection is deep and they had just tons of IPA’s to choose from – and they were excellent from breweries we love. It was a lot of food! Everything at Lardo is so well done and the beers were absolutely delious. Lardo’s menu changes frequently enough with another monthly chef sandwich special changing every month, that’s a lot and it is all delicious…and still I can’t wait for some of the items to return when it is their season to be back on the menu. The patio is great, inside is cozy on a winter day. It’s super local and they are really kind people. They have a great happy hour and a lot of delicious sounding drinks including non alcoholic, if beer and root beer aren’t your thing.

The Smoky Cubano sandwich was everything I could have wanted. Smoky, tender pork with melty cheese and perfectly done peppers, topped with pickles and crispy warm bread, I will dream about this sandwich. The hushpuppies were a crunchy delight. They were served with sweet butter but honestly, they didn’t need anything, they were light and savory on their own. I don’t usually eat sandwiches, but this place blew my mind. The service was friendly, not forced, with a casual laid back vibe that didn’t rush any part of our experience. I really appreciated that. We went on a chilly day but the outdoor seating would be great in warmer weather.

I got the Banh Mi and my partner got the Cubano. We both liked our sandwiches but they also felt off. I chose the banh mi off a friend’s recommendation. I really wish it was on a baguette and it felt like the meatball was a little too, I don’t know, safe? Like an Asian sweet meat that wasn’t boldly any direction. Just sort of asiany? Probably get wrecked for that comment.
And my partner really liked the smokeyness of her Cubano but felt like it was really the only thing she could taste. No counter balance from the mustard/pickles.
Again enjoyable but lacking. But service was great and people were sweet. Yeah hip hop and sandwiches is a good time.

One of my favorite places to stop when I’m in town (was a regular when I lived here).
I LOVE the mortadella and can vouch for just about every sandy I’ve tried over the years. Great for groups and weather permitting, enjoying a beer and sandwich outside. The staff is kind, and service is fast.
Only reason atmosphere got 4 stars is the music can be loud at times.
My other favorite sandwiches:
Nashville fried chicken
Korean pork shoulder
Chefwich is always good and supports a great cause.
