Reviews
Even if you visit during peak hours, the space is large and very accommodating. The restaurant exudes elegance, beautiful inside and out with tasteful décor that makes the whole experience feel a little extra fancy. There’s also a spacious bar and plenty of outdoor patio seating, ideal for soaking up that perfect San Diego weather.
Now onto the food (we definitely ordered plenty!):
Bruschetta – Delightful start! Fresh and full of flavor.
Gnocchi Gratinati – Fluffy, flavorful, and maybe my favorite dish of the day.
Gnocchi al Sugo di Cinghiale – Yummy!!!! Comfort food taken up a notch.
Linguine Mare Chiaro – A total win for seafood lovers.
Rigatoni alla Vodka – Perfect pick for the kiddos (and adults sneaking a bite).
Pizzas (Fradiavola, Cristina, Margherita) – All solid choices — crisp, cheesy, and satisfying, though quite similar in taste.
As for service, it was good overall. Our server handled our large group smoothly, keeping drinks filled and orders spot-on. While the personal touch could’ve been a bit warmer, everything ran seamlessly, which made for a relaxed and enjoyable afternoon.
If you’re in the San Diego area, definitely check this spot out — it’s worth the visit! And keep an eye out for the Forks UP! video review on our socials, @colefamilyvalues.
I started with the Caesar salad, followed by the gnocchi with vodka sauce, both of which were outstanding. The flavors were balanced, fresh, and exactly what you’d hope for from a quality Italian kitchen.
My server, Vania, was absolutely incredible — warm, attentive, and genuinely focused on making the experience special.
Overall, I highly recommend Il Fornaio to anyone visiting the area for the first time. Between the views, the food, and the service, it’s a spot worth adding to your San Diego itinerary.
We got a couple apps and the arancinis were fantastic!
We met one of the managers and he was extremely friendly. Actually talked for 3 or 4 minutes.
Only complaint is that surcharge. Nearly every person and company are experiencing rising costs, just put it the cost of the meal if you’re going to charge it. It’s tacky to show us a price and then add a surcharge on top of it.
Spent $300 party of 3
Definitely MUST call ahead and ask if the Chef is working that day, otherwise, food is pre made and heated when ordered.
Im a Chef, very high standards.
Tiramisu, left a lot to be desired. I think they used whipped cream w maybe, just maybe a tad of Mascarpone. Pretty though.
Great place and views. Food great when the chef is present only.
Unexpectedly amazing views and atmosphere. Warm summer day sitting in a gorgeous honed Carrara marble bar ❤️ few places in town have that cool bar. The Pizza Cristina was outstanding, delicious! with layers of prosciutto and shaved Italian cheese. Later we had one w red sauce and Italian sausage, not a champion. Cristina is now my favorite, beating any one i’ve had at the Little Italy.
The cocktails, beautiful, fresh, tasty, prosecco was fair. Place is simply gorgeous.
We will be coming back often.
View is Superb❤️
I am writing to share feedback regarding my recent dining experience at your Coronado establishment this evening. While there were certainly enjoyable aspects, I also encountered some significant concerns that I felt compelled to bring to your attention.
To begin with the meal, my salad was truly excellent—fresh, well-prepared, and thoroughly delicious. The pizza, while boasting a very pleasant flavor, unfortunately arrived with a somewhat soggy crust, which slightly detracted from the overall enjoyment.
My initial service experience was very positive, as a gentleman attentively assisted me, and his professionalism was much appreciated. However, as the evening progressed, I observed several actions from another staff member that raised considerable hygiene concerns. This particular server, whom I believe frequently works the bar area, is relatively short with long, dark hair tonight her hair was tied back in a ponytail.
My primary concern stems from an incident where I witnessed her handling a customer’s food for leftover take-home box. Before placing the food into its container, she explicitly touched a waste receptacle, and then immediately proceeded to handle the to-go packaging and boxed the leftovers. This practice poses a significant risk of cross-contamination and is, frankly, a fundamental breach of food safety protocols that left me quite unsettled.
Later in my meal, when I requested a box for my leftover pizza, her actions again demonstrated a concerning disregard for hygiene. Instead of directly bringing me a box, she placed my pizza plate on a different, unoccupied table. What was particularly alarming was when she then took a *used* utensil from a stack of dirty dishes she had in her hand which she cleared from *another* table and placed it directly onto my pizza plate. I immediately walk to the table where she had placed my pizza plate to removed the utensil, as it was impossible to ascertain its prior use or cleanliness, and I found it highly inappropriate to combine it with my remaining food. This action struck me as not only unhygienic but also demonstrative of a lack of attention to basic food service standards.
These observations significantly detracted from an otherwise pleasant meal. I felt compelled to bring these matters to your attention, as I believe they represent serious deviations from expected hygiene and service standards within a dining establishment. I trust that you will address these issues to ensure all patrons can dine with confidence in your commitment to food safety and cleanliness.
The staff were all so amazing. All night all everyone could talk about was how amazing the waiters assigned to our tables were. The event planner I got to work with closer to the event happening, Marie-Isabelle was absolutely incredible and I loved getting to work with her.
The restaurant even made custom menus for our event. Everything was so easy and seamless. Also provided free parking for all the guests. When we didn’t meet our set minimum, guests got to take home wine bottles.
This restaurant would be absolutely perfect for any type of rehearsal dinner or celebration.
I originally had a reservation for 5:00 pm, moved it to 7:00 pm when my date was running late, and arrived early at 6:00 pm by mistake. I left and returned at 7:00 pm, only to be told they could not find our reservation. After some back and forth and offering to show the OpenTable confirmation, we were told we would be “next.” About 30 minutes later we were asked if we wanted to sit outside, despite temperatures being in the high 40s to low 50s.
At 7:36 pm we were finally seated. Less than five minutes later, while sitting at the table, I received a phone call saying that our 7:00 pm reservation was now ready, the same reservation they previously said they could not find.
Once seated, we placed a drink order and an appetizer, and then our server disappeared for over 30 minutes. The first drink tasted like soda water and appeared to be made with very low-quality vodka, and the second was not much better. During this time, we were also brought the wrong food twice, even though we had not yet ordered our entrées.
Basic cleanliness was also an issue. My glass had dried food stuck to the side, and my fork still had food on it that clearly made it through the dishwasher. I had to ask another server for clean silverware.
After finishing, it took another 30 minutes just to get the server’s attention to request the check. To top it off, I later received a notification from OpenTable marking me as a no-show for the 7:00 pm reservation.
The restaurant itself is lovely, and the food was mediocre but acceptable. Unfortunately, the service issues were consistent and compounded throughout the entire evening. I don’t foresee returning.
The restaurant itself is beautiful along the bay of Coronado, the room was even more beautiful in person with the view of the bay & city.
The service was excellent the entire night, the food was incredible, everyone was very satisfied.
Planning & communication from everyone on the special events team was great from start to end.
I can’t wait to come back here again for future celebrations!
Make sure commenting to the hostess if you’re celebrating, we went for a birthday celebration and received a delicious gelato as a treat.
Also, if you visit at night, this place has one of the nicest views of SD bay. I share a couple from a recent visit… do not miss this place!!!
