Some of Ted’s burgers are very good, like the Avalon burger, this time we had their new smash burger, and their fish sandwich. The burger was boring, and really didn’t have the taste of a smash burger. The fish sandwich would have been good, but had barely any sauce, so it was extremely dry, and tasteless! I ordered broccoli with the fish sandwich, they gave me huge pieces that needed to be cut up. They were not busy, and I would have liked the waiter to stop by so I could get more sauce for my fish sandwich. Not a good experience, and not woth the drive through crazy traffic, and trying to find a parking spot. I expect better when eating out!

Made an Open Table reservation, so no wait for a table on a Friday at 6. Although if you walked it, you wouldn’t have waited either.
Started with the bison chili and it was Fantastic! So much so that we asked for a bucket to go. They couldn’t accommodate at the time, but said if we called the day before, they could. Which I will absolutely take them up on.
For dinner I ordered the bison short rib. I was pretty hyped about the chili, so I was really looking forward to the short rib. It came out before I was barely done with my chili, which is already a bad sign for freshness. It was plated well, but from the first bite, it was incredibly salty and very dry. It tasted like it was made in the morning when they made the chili and sat under a heat lamp all day. I’m normally a salt guy, but it was way too much.
My co-pilot was with me and he also ordered the bison short rib, but his actually looked pretty moist and tender. The mashed potatoes were also quite dry and sticky. Which again is a freshness indicator. None of the food came out piping hot. Even the chili was kinda lukewarm. The kitchen can do better, guys. Don’t let complacency ruin what could be good food.

I would go back for the chili, but maybe order something different. But I also want to know what a fresh version of that short rib tastes like.

Ted’s Montana Grill in Bozeman has great atmosphere and good food. On the particular night that we were there they had been slow, but got busy after they had sent a lot of staff home. Unfortunately, it turned out to be a two hour dinner for the three of us. It was over an hour before we got our food and our salads came with our dinner so we sat there with no food, no bread or anything for over an hour. They did the best that they could, being short staffed. My dinner was very good. My steak was cooked perfectly for me. I absolutely loved the huckleberry margarita. I also took a slice of cheesecake to go, but it was just ok.

The service here is excellent. The food isn’t bad, it just isn’t served hot. My bison chili was nuke warm, fries were not hot. I enjoyed my bison burger, it was my first.

This was my third visit to Ted’s while visiting from out of town—and unfortunately, it will be my last. While my first experience was great, each visit since has gone downhill, and this most recent one was incredibly disappointing.

We waited 30 minutes just to get drinks from the bar. Our server seemed overwhelmed, and it was clear the restaurant was struggling to keep up. Our kids were starving, and it took an hour and a half for our food to arrive. When it finally came, I ordered the ribeye, which was completely flavorless—definitely not what I expect from a place known for steaks.

At the end of the meal, I brought up our concerns to the server. She apologized and offered 10% off the bill. We were charged, signed, and ready to leave after a 2.5-hour dinner. However, we noticed the discount hadn’t been applied, so we stayed behind while the bill was corrected and reprinted.

Days later, we noticed an unauthorized charge on our account—for the full amount of the bill. We’ve called the restaurant multiple times to speak with a manager, and no one has returned our calls.

As someone with 15 years in the restaurant industry, I find it unacceptable that no one from management addressed our concerns at the table or has followed up since.

We’ll be disputing the charge with our credit card company. It’s unfortunate, because Ted’s used to be a great spot, but the service and accountability have gone severely downhill. If you’re looking for a good steak and a smooth dining experience, I’d recommend going elsewhere.

Very nice restaurant, plates are very pleasing to the eye. Our waitresses were fantastic, upbeat, courteous and attentive to service! Shout out to Kirsten for helping when we were her first table on her first official shift.
I try to make my reviews with an open mind as to what a restaurant is trying to accomplish with their dish, and I’m always trying to do something new, but unfortunately here I have a few critiques.
We ordered: Buffalo nachos appetizer, chips and onion dip (app), romane and iceberg salad, grilled chicken potatoes and vegetable side. We also ordered Buffalo brisket with potatoes, and vegetable side.
The nachos came out with minimal toppings, and I mean 80%+ naked chips. We asked for an up on the toppings and while a marginal amount were added, it appeared a lot of their bison sauce was poured over the chips creating a very soggy nacho experience.
The grilled chicken was flavorful with a grilled flavor, but no spices are added so the chicken comes out flat.
The bison brisket is actually just a slow roasted (crock pot) shredded bison meat, and while the sauce was delicious I did not appreciate the meat as much. Bison being a lean meat, even drown in sauce comes across very dry. I was excited to try a bison brisket and this is as much a bait and switch as claiming a Hamburger sandwich is ground beef over a flat of white bread with a salad on top.
Now enough with the negative, I really want to speak on what we liked most. The salad was delicious firm and fresh. The chips and onion dip was gone within 2 minutes. Everyone at the table loved the fresh baked chips and the flavor of the dip is fantastic without having too strong of an onion flavor. Great balance between salty and savory.
The atmosphere feels quality and yet still small town. You certainly feel attended to by their staff and you can tell that Ted’s Montana grill is trying to tackle a difficult market, Fresh, local and distinct. This presents a slough of navigations that most wouldn’t dare try. Looking around at some of the other dishes, I would certainly like to try the salmon, Bison steak and crab cakes.
While my experience may not fit the norm, I would recommend avoiding the “brisket” if you know what proper brisket is and avoid the nachos.
*also note the chocolate/ice cream/fudge stand in the entry has delicious treats. It is quite expensive, but i would highly recommend them if you are able. The flavors are phenomenal and of very good quality. I was blown away.

The back patio was lovely. Service friendly. My meatloaf was excellent. Wife’s Bison filet was slightly overdone but cheerfully replaced. The roasted corn was very good. Would definitely return.

Had the bison steak. OMG it was amazing. I didn’t want it to end. Worse knowing that I have no idea when I will ever get to experience that taste again. Was a little manic but was homecoming weekend and the place was insane busy.
