Steak ‘n Shake, a classic American brand, was founded in 1934 in Normal, Illinois by Gus Belt who pioneered the concept of premium burgers and milkshakes. For over 85 years, the company’s name has been symbolic of its heritage. The word steak stood for steakburger. The term shake stood for hand-dipped milkshakes. Gus was determined to serve his customers the finest burgers and shakes in the business. Today, Steak ‘n Shake remains the better burger leader, serving premium 100% beef steakburgers, hand-dipped milkshakes, thin crispy fries, and more. Steakburgers are made without preservatives or artificial ingredients, topped with fresh produce, and always hand-crafted to order.

You order on a screen and I always like a person but the ordering was clear. It was quiet and clean. Milkshakes are amazing and all the other food was great too.
I went to this Steak ’n Shake around 11:30 PM last night. Yes, it was about 30 minutes before closing, but I assumed we’d be finished and gone well before midnight—which unfortunately wasn’t the case.
There was one particular woman, who I’m assuming was the manager, who was extremely rude not only to me but to other customers as well. For starters, she was wearing a bonnet, which already seemed unprofessional for someone working, especially if she’s in a management position.
I ordered a regular steakburger and a milkshake. While I was in the restroom (which was filthy and had no soap btw), I heard my name being called about 3–4 times. When I came out and told her that I heard my name, she immediately said she never called it. Thankfully, a customer in front of me confirmed that my name had in fact been called. The employee then went to the back and came out with only my milkshake.
It was a little busy with several people waiting for food, so I assumed they were just trying to get the milkshakes out quickly before bringing the food out all at once.
Around 11:55 PM, my friend finally received her milkshake and meal. At that point, I went to the counter and saw the same rude employee standing near the kiosk with another cook, just talking as if nothing else needed to be done. I asked if my food would be coming out next, and she immediately went off on me. She yelled that I should have said something earlier and claimed the kitchen was closed and there was nothing she could do. She didn’t apologize or offer a refund.
What didn’t make sense was that my friend’s food—and another customer’s food—had literally just come out minutes earlier. I’m almost certain my order was still on the screen and was marked as completed even though it never came out.
I explained that I had ordered nearly 30 minutes earlier. She asked what I ordered, so I started looking for my receipt (I don’t come here often and had to double-check what I got). While I was trying to grab it, she kept repeatedly asking and raising her voice. Eventually I had to say, “Give me a second—you see me grabbing my receipt.”
Luckily, another employee in the back came up and politely asked what I had ordered. I showed her my receipt and she went back to make my food—even though the other employee had just claimed the kitchen was closed.
While I was still waiting, it was nearly midnight when they officially close. The same rude employee then kicked everyone out of the lobby. I understand wanting to clear the lobby at closing—I’ve worked in food service before—but her delivery was extremely rude. She basically just said, “Y’all need to get out.”
She even came back to me asking if I was waiting on cheese or something, even though I clearly didn’t have a bag of food and had already explained I was still waiting on my meal.
As soon as the nicer cook finally brought my food out, I left. Even my friend mentioned she thought she was going to have to step in because of how rude that employee was being. I’m not someone who yells or is rude to workers, but that situation really pushed me to my limit.
To make things even stranger, it was pouring rain outside, and as we were getting into the car, I saw the same rude employee and another cook come outside and get into the car parked next to us. It was confusing since everyone had just been kicked out under the assumption that they needed to close down and clean the restaurant.
Overall, I won’t be returning to this Steak ’n Shake location. I understand it can be frustrating when customers come in close to closing time, but it doesn’t take 30 minutes to make a burger, and it definitely doesn’t require rude attitudes and poor customer service. Beware of this location
I ordered a Single burger Plain, just Ketchup. No Cheese. Nothing else. This is ordered on a Kiosk. It will not print a receipt. Maybe out of paper. I wait about 20 Min. I asked about it. They go look, a Lady behind me tells me they gave her my food. She has not gotten a corrected meal yet. We tell the people what happened. There is a lot of talk, about they had call out my number. I have been standing at the counter. She has her ticket and my burger. I wait. They said they would cook me another one. I will wait again. They bring it out and say Sorry. I started out the door but stopped and wanted to see make sure its my order. It has cheese. I wait to tell them no one comes out. I step around the counter to get someone’s attention. I get scolded NOONE is allowed behind the counter. I tell them this is not my order, She says WELL YOU Didn’t Say you didn’t want cheese. I want my money back. Oh, since they did make it correct at first, and they called my number ( no that did not happen) they don’t give refunds. And the person that gives me refunds is not there; another reason is I can’t get my money back. I might add, this thin burger with only Ketchup is now $5.47 . It tastes good, but $5.47???
I do no claim to know how to run a restaurant, but they should take some direction from a Famous Chicken Sandwich restaurant runs a store. They seriously need some organization.
They can’t even take order properly.
It’s a shame because I love Steak N Shake but this location is very bad with dealing with customers inside. Hopefully they can improve.
