During one of my trips through the area this past year, I stopped into 1902 Tap & Grill for the first time to try their pizza for lunch. I really enjoy pizza and make a point to try new places whenever I can — especially hometown spots — to see what others are doing in the pizza world and to expand my own flavor profile.
When I walked in, the restaurant was open, clean, and very quiet. I was greeted with a smile, seated promptly, and given a menu. At the time, there was only one other table occupied — a group of older women enjoying lunch and catching up — and that was it. The atmosphere felt relaxed and welcoming.
When my server came by, I ordered my drink and pizza. I learned that pizzas only come in one size, so I kept things simple: pepperoni, cheese, and mushrooms.
Unfortunately, this is where the experience started to fall apart. I waited roughly 45 minutes for my pizza, which was surprising considering there was only one other table in the restaurant, and they already had their food. I understand that takeout orders can impact timing, but I didn’t see any pickup traffic coming in during that window, and I could clearly see the kitchen area while waiting.
When the pizza finally arrived, a few issues were immediately noticeable. The pizza was heavily overloaded with cheese, which prevented the dough from cooking properly. As a result, the crust underneath was undercooked and had a gummy texture, which is very off-putting. A well-made pizza should have balance, and excess cheese often works against that.
The mushrooms also appeared to be canned, which personally isn’t my preference. I’m a certified pizza chef, and I strongly favor fresh ingredients whenever possible — they simply make a better pizza in both flavor and texture.
Would I return to 1902 Tap & Grill? Yes — but not for the pizza. I’d like to try other items on the menu, such as the burgers or cheese curds. In fact, the food at the other table looked genuinely good, which makes me believe there are strong items coming out of this kitchen — just not the pizza, at least based on my experience.
I’m glad I tried it, but the pizza didn’t impress me. That said, I’d be open to giving the restaurant another chance on a future visit — just with a different menu choice.

This restaurant was definitely a 5 star experience! Food was so good and service was awesome too. The pretzels with beer cheese were mouth watering..the best I have ever had! If your looking for a great place to grab dinner with delicious food you will not be disappointed

Everything about this place was absolutely amazing! Our waiter was so sweet and attentive, the atmosphere was so relaxed and cozy, and the food was some the best I’ve had at a restaurant! Everyone in our group was absolutely floored with how good and fresh the food was! The potato chips are even homemade! The menu is small, but if you can have a small menu but can nail every dish to perfection, then the small menu is not a problem!

AMAZING!! The whole experience was phenomenal. I had the creamy pepper soup and was blown away by how good it was. We also had the mac n cheese bites – yum! Ordered Wednesday Wings (BBQ of course) and chips. Chicken was perfectly cooked and chips were soooo good. Darlene was extremely nice and pointed out popular food choices as well as specials. Kept our table happy and drinks topped up. Definitely would come here again 🙂

So glad we stopped by 1902 on Tap today. We have driven by a few times now and decided to give it a try. Great service and great food. We will definitely make this a regular stop when we come back to the UP. Hopefully, our waitress Heather will be here when we come back. Thank you!!

I have to leave a review especially since they never asked for one. I was visiting my son at MTU and he googled burgers nearby and we stumbled upon this place. We loved everything, the food, the service ( my son said it was the best service he’s ever experienced) friendly, informative without being overwhelming. We had pretzel bites to start, crispy chicken sandwich and pub burger with pretzel bun. Everything top notch. We’ll be back for sure!!!! Strongly recommend. Thank you for showing us true UP hospitality

I really enjoyed my visit to the 1902 Tap and Grill. The service was outstanding, very friendly and attentive. The atmosphere is cozy and comfortable. The beer cheese soup and pizza are excellent, and I look forward to enjoying them again, However, I was excited to try the Potato Rounds appetizer special, but was disappointed. They were very dry, and there was hardly any cheese on them. I actually thought they forgot the cheese, because the bacon bits and green onion toppings were not on the potatoes, rather all loose in the bottom of the basket, but there were a couple of sprinkles of cheese on the last few potatoes. Overall, though, I really enjoyed the restaurant and plan to return.

ARGUMENTATIVE, DEFENSIVE, AND RIGHTEOUS OWNER!!! PLEASE READ!!
My son, his friend, and I were there last Friday at 7:19PM. We received our 3 burgers and fries at 8:02PM (47minutes later!) There was only 4 tables in the restaurant on a Friday night which in hindsight I should have seen the red flag ahead of time! So when the server asked how is our food I stated it was switched around with each of us having the wrong items on our burgers but my main issue was the 47 minute wait. The server was nice and when I asked if she could throw in dessert she stated, “sure thing! The owner is here tonight too!” About ten minutes later a very scarcastic older lady visited our table and started to argue with me about the order was put in at 7:22PM not at 7:19PM! She didn’t see an issue with waiting 45 minutes for burgers and fries and said, “this isn’t Mc.Donalds! We have a new cook in the kitchen tonight and even i had to help!” She didn’t not apologize and actually said, “3 pieces of cheesecake was nit warranted for our issue!” I asked her to give us 2 pieces and let’s end this conversation. She apparently didn’t come to our table to apologize but rather be defensive. Any other restaurant owner would have comped our meal, apologized, and threw in dessert! THIS OWNER HAS A LOT TO LEARN BY LISTENING TO HER PATRONS, HOWEVER WE WILL NEVER BE BACK NOR RECOMMEND THE FOOD HERE!!! PLEASE GO SOMEWHERE ELSE!!!
