We went here during restaurant week so we got to try a lot of different things. The gumbo is really delicious with good heat. I also liked the salad. We liked the crawfish toast. We were split on the bread pudding. The chocolate mouse appears to be a restaurant menu only item and not quite my favorite texture. Come here for a leisurely meal. It may take time to place your order. Staff were friendly and asked us about pork dietary restrictions. I recommend making a reservation but you can probably make it only a couple days out.

Stopped for a late lunch. Everything was awesome. Patti my server was so nice with recommendations to make my meal better. They had a prix fixe lunch menu and I got there just as happy hour was starting for $12 cocktails. Had the Dirty Cajun, the Rum and Rye, and finished with the My Cherry Amore. All great cocktails. The vegetarian gumbo was excellent and the pimento cheese was great. Going to come back and try all the drinks. Just sitting here after finishing my food and drinks and soaking in the atmosphere. Really the service is exceptional and I definitely would recommend!

This place was an absolute vibe. We walked in on a Saturday around 1 PM and somehow lucked out with bar seating—already a win. I highly recommend starting with an appetizer, especially since they offer a bottomless brunch special on weekends (dangerous in the best way).
My boyfriend and I posted up at the bar and were immediately taken care of. He ordered the chicken and beignets, and I went with the garlic shrimp and grits—and honestly, I have zero notes. No tweaks, no suggestions, no “next time I’d do this differently.” The food was phenomenal, start to finish.
The vibe? Even better. The bartender made a mean Old Fashioned—balanced, smooth, and strong in all the right ways. Then came the real showstopper: a live jazz trio that absolutely blew our minds. The music filled the room without overpowering it, and by the end we felt completely energized, elevated, and fully in the moment.
This is one of those places that just gets it. Food, drinks, atmosphere—10/10 across the board.

I’m glad I finally made it here. It’s a lovely place. It does give a jazzy, New Orleans vibe. The bar is long and they have ample seating around the room. They have good Happy Hour deals which include some food. I had the Hush Puppies which come with some maple butter on the side, which is delicious and the Char grilled Oysters are equally . The Cocktails are top notch. It’s pricey but like I mentioned above they have good Happy Hour deals. The service is very good. I would definitely go back.

There aren’t many authentic Cajun spots left in NYC, and Filé definitely fills that gap. Food and drinks were delicious— my favorite was the grilled oysters. Warm and friendly service, and a free show if you sit at the bar where you can watch the chef.

My friend made a reservation for here on Saturday for the brunch to celebrate her birthday. Very nice space, full bar, live jazz was great! Not too far from the J train.
We were seated and we asked about the boozy brunch and was told it had to be reserved but no where on the site is a boozy brunch listed. I asked the waitress to show me how to reserve on opentable and it was like jumping through hoops; she had to go ask herself. But anyway we weren’t pressed.
What we ordered:
For apps: char-grilled oysters- very good. And the Pork sampler board; I didn’t care for the pork cracklings, fried too hard and no flavor. The sausage was good as well as the Fried Boudin balls. House Creole mustard thumbs up. The Spicy pickled beans were a miss- too acidic they tasted like apple cider vinegar.
I had the Chicken and Beignets with I belive blueberry compote. Chicken was fried well, very tasty. Two pieces of thighs, good portion. My friend helped me eat it. The beignets were good as well. My friend had the Tiny’s gumbo which she enjoyed. Her friend had the Onion bacon Angus burger, I think, and the other had the Tasso Shrimp Grits. All were very tasty.
For drinks:
They had me drinking the Rumrye old fashion. I liked it, very smooth, grown n sexy, meant to be sipped. I also had a glad of Rosè. I was told the French 75 was good. The girls enjoyed it. We also had “shots,” of whiskey. We had a good time. Lofty bill. But hey it’s one a year.
I would return for Happy-hour or restaurant week. They also offer a pre-fixed menu. If you’re budget conscious I would reccomend those options. 4 stars for the boozy brunch mishap.

Thanks to a very mild Nor’easter, my trip to NOLA was grounded two weeks ago. I craved the essence of New Orleans and so I went on a search for a bit of New Orleans in the city. An Influencer I follow, @briancantstopeating, featured this restaurant on one of his reviews online. I was intrigued by the authenticity of the dishes and the overall vibe of the establishment. I immediately added File Gumbo Bar to my list of restaurants to try on my Day of Redemption! We made a reservation for 1 PM brunch. When I arrived a little early I was still immediately seated, even though my guest had not arrived yet. We opted for the unlimited brunch which includes your choice of Hurricanes, Bloody Marys, Mimosas, and Milk Punch. Our intent was to try every drink because you can switch in between drinks during the 90 minute unlimited brunch. We started off with the hurricanes first. We were a little underwhelmed with the hurricane’s size and overall taste, just seemed a little lacking. The next drink that we tried was the milk punch and my goodness, words cannot describe how great this drink is! If you like white Russians or bourbon in general, this drink is for you. I ended up having four during brunch after having a hurricane. For our appetizer, we tried the honey butter biscuits. The biscuits were very buttery and crisp on the outside, while moist on the inside. The butter had a hint of spice to it, which I was not expecting, but it was still overall a really good biscuit. For our entrées, I opted for the Tony’s all in gumbo and my friend opted for the garlic shrimp over grits. Both dishes were exquisite and very generous portions, enough for two. My gumbo in particular was food for the soul! After our entrées, we opted for the chocolate praline cake with ice cream. The pralines were covered in this butterscotch rich caramel sauce that was to die for! There was a very talented jazz band playing throughout brunch. The overall vibe was very authentic, and very inviting, making you feel right at home in NOLA. My server was a great conversationalist, very laid-back, very professional. I absolutely loved the service. We had such a great experience our first time here, we will definitely come back. There are so many other amazing dishes on the menu to try, of course next time the beignets are a must. I absolutely recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a really fun brunch vibe with authentic food for the soul and great service!

Went to File Gumbo Bar for their jazz bottomless brunch and absolutely loved it! The warm, chill vibes, amazing drinks, and delicious food make it stand out in the area. They have $36 bottomless drinks on weekends and very affordable happy hour specials. Special thanks to manager Shane for organizing everything, definitely coming back next time I’m in the area! 🙂

Such a cool Gumbo experience and unique way to have it prepared so efficiently for you. Chef John is AWESOME and he truly cares about his customers enjoying their food. Everyone on staff was very friendly. I work close by for now so I will try everything while I can. Highly recommend eating at the bar so you can see the food being made in front of you. Appetizers were delicious and drinks are top notch.

The food was great — amazing seafood. However, the service / kitchen (while nice), was quite slow. We arrived right when the restaurant opened, but received our food ~30 minutes in. They also had a jazz trio for lunch, which was overall a fun touch. To note — the food was definitely on the pricier end.
