Uncle Tetsu Japanese Cheesecake in Boston Chinatown is another example of the area’s growing collection of Asian foodie franchises.

The colorful mini tarts on display were cute and eye-catching. I just wish that playful energy carried into the overall atmosphere and presentation, which felt like very little effort had been put into creating an inviting space.

The cheesecake itself was surprisingly not sweet. It was light and fluffy, almost like a sponge cake, and honestly didn’t have much of a noticeable cheese flavor. Not disappointing, just different from what I expected. One of my guests really enjoyed it.

That said, I’m not sure I’d spend $15 again for a 6–8 inch sponge-style cake. I do prefer the traditional mom-and-pop Chinese bakeries where you can still walk out with a whole box of assorted treats for about the same price.

Solid cheesecakes and amazing Japanese cheese tarts.

First fell in love with Japanese cheesecakes years ago in Osaka. The jiggly ones that went viral everywhere. Uncle Tetsu is from Japan, but like a lot of international brands that end up in the U.S., they’re not mainstream back home. Still, Boston doesn’t get many international dessert chains, so when they opened in Chinatown last year, I was pretty excited. It was packed for months. Back then they only had the OG cheesecake and honey madeleines, but now they’ve added flavored cheese tarts, so I stopped by again to try those.

Their OG cheesecake isn’t really my thing. I appreciate that it’s not too sweet, but the texture wasn’t as soft or airy as the ones I’ve had in Japan. Definitely better than a typical American cheesecake, just not something I’d crave on its own.

The cheese tarts, though, were fantastic. I tried all the flavors (classic, matcha, and chocolate) and they were all great. The filling basically oozes out the moment you take a bite, which gets messy fast, but the thick, warm, custardy texture was ridiculously satisfying. These I’d come back for.

I’ve tried their Original Cheesecake and Chocolate Cheesecake, and both have a light, fluffy texture with that soft, jiggly feel. It’s a true Japanese-style cheesecake and absolutely delicious.

My personal favorite is the Chocolate Cheesecake, though the Original one is really good too. I haven’t tried anything else from the menu yet, but they do have plenty of dessert options, and given the quality so far, it’s probably worth exploring more.

Uncle Tetsu is fantastic! The Japanese cheesecakes are light, fluffy, and melt-in-your-mouth delicious. Every bite is perfectly sweet and creamy without being heavy. The staff are friendly and welcoming, and the bakery is always clean and inviting. Definitely a must-visit if you love cheesecake — I’ll keep coming back for more!

Take out only. Happy I finally got to try the famous Uncle Tetsu cheesecakes. The matcha flavor actually tasted like matcha and was very fluffy and light. Would have liked to eat it fresh at the store, but there’s no seating. Service was friendly, and prices were reasonable.

The staff was extremely careless!!! We ordered two ube cheesecakes and six tarts, but he gave us one matcha cheese cake and six tarts. We only found it out after we got home. The lady in front of us double-checked her order before leaving the bakery and found out her order was messed up. We should have checked our order!! Make sure you triple check your order before leaving the bakery!!

We needed a quick cheesecake for a celebration and after eating at a diner close by we were able to find this amazing cheesecake shop in Chinatown. Not only is the setup, logo and staff amazing I’ve never had a cheesecake that tastes like this one! It was very light and flavorful not rich and taxing like most places and not overly sweet thankfully. This place is a hidden gem and may have the best cheesecake I’ve ever had, I gotta try it again to find out lol

Best cheese cake in my life. Soft, perfect balance between cheesiness and fluffiness for my taste.
Dont expect your heavy and dense cheese tasting cake from cheesecake factory. This is light and airy and ESPECIALLY NOT diabetes sweet. Perfect sweetness. Absolutely love!

To-go only. No seating. Tiny space even for standing.
Didn’t want cheesecake but wanted to check them out. Got the tart, and the cold tofu that they topped off with some sort brown sugar. The tart’s filling was oozy, and the tofu made me think of a very light creme brulee.
