A Hidden Lobster Gem in the Heart of Ghent
Tucked away in a cozy basement setting, Le Homard Rouge in Ghent is truly a hidden culinary treasure. The intimate atmosphere immediately makes you feel welcome — warm lighting, relaxed ambiance, and the kind of charm that turns dinner into an experience.
It’s clear why lobster is their specialty (and judging from other reviews, it’s what keeps guests coming back). Every dish highlights the quality and freshness of the lobster, prepared with finesse and creativity.
I opted for the “Trending” set menu, and it was outstanding from start to finish:
Lobster Cappuccino – A beautifully presented lobster soup with a light foam on top. Rich, velvety, and deeply flavorful without being overpowering — a perfect start.
Lobster with Asparagus – Elegant and perfectly cooked. The asparagus added a fresh, seasonal balance to the sweet, tender lobster.
Lobster Ravioli – Comforting yet refined. The pasta was delicate, and the filling was generous and packed with flavor.
Dame Blanche with Crumble & 70% Cocoa Chocolate Sauce – A classic dessert elevated. The intense dark chocolate sauce paired beautifully with the creamy ice cream and crunchy crumble.
What truly elevated the evening was the service. The staff and host were exceptionally welcoming, took the time to explain each dish, and made us feel genuinely cared for throughout the night. The attention to detail and warmth made the experience even more special.

Wow very well decorated and cosy restaurant. The owners were very kind and the food was amazing. I enjoyed the lobsters serving and for sure will come again. Recommended

Words cannot describe what an amazing evening we had last night (Xmas eve).
We were in Ghent looking for a nice evening meal, walked around the corner and saw the sign for the restaurant on the river side.
We walked down the unassuming side street only to see the menu was not in English.
Being barely fluent in my native tongue, I was going to give up as they weren’t open yet to come and look at a menu I could understand.
BUT! There was a lovely woman who I believe was the owner I could see through the glass door so I decided to knock on.
She explained it would be a full lobster dining experience, she brought us in proudly to show the amazingly well decorated restaurant in the cellar and let us know there had been a cancellation for 2!
This was quite literally fate….
We raced back to the hotel, changed and returned at 7am to start what was without a doubt the most INCREDIBLE dining experience of our lives.
I honestly don’t have the words to describe how incredible every aspect of it was! Me and my gf sat for 3.5 hours engrossed in conversation about life and about the food, just taking it all in.
My girlfriend isn’t a big fan on sea food but she is now converted, last night was incredible, amazing and every other word you can think of and more.
So much so that we have decided to come back to Ghent In the summer just so we can visit la homard rouge again!
To all the staff involved both front and back of house….

An impeccable evening for us. From the moment we were welcomed and seated to when we left, they took excellent care of us. The food was fantastic as we took a menu of baby lobsters and felt stuffed when leaving. All plates had their own flavour combinations and we found each of them refreshing and tasty.

Can only recommend coming to this wonderful place. Everything about it was great: the ambient is lovely. The service is excellent, fast and friendly. And most important: the food was delicious! We had shared two starters: 1. Fried small Sepia with aioli and burnt lime. & 2. Tapas small schrimp croquettes 5 pieces with garlic mayonaise. And then we each ate the three course lobster menu. We finished with a tasty salted chocolate creme brûlé. I’d love to come back to this place when I visit Gent!

“Where seafood meets meat”… Is their slogan and they position themselves as a “surf and turf” restaurant, to then hear during ordering that they don’t have any meat was quite a surprise – the lady even claimed they hadn’t had any meat coming in for awhile. It honestly felt like a trick to get everyone to order the same set lobster menu. We really looked forward to this place as we had 2 lobster fans and 2 steak fans in our group of 4… Very weird vibe during ordering. The food was decent… But couldn’t take away the bitter feeling.

The food looked like it would’ve been good if it wasn’t for the fact that I had to leave after 10 minutes because of the horrible treatment. They were racist, and made me feel very unwelcomed. As soon as I walked in, the older staff was already very rude, and ignored us when we were ready to order. When we ordered, the waitress was mad that we did not order more food like the menu set, and went on a rampage about how this place is a restaurant and not a tapas bar, and that we couldn’t just pick and choose what we wanted to eat? When we tried to order more she continued talking, and while I tried to be understanding and kind, I had a bad taste in my mouth. We left the restaurant right after. Such a shame, I would NOT recommend this place for tourists. They do NOT want you there.
