Friday Night At the Angry Gold Fish
This is usually a solid place to get a burger, but came up short.
We arrived around 7:30 and it was busy. I asked for the corner table which was large and there were two of us. I chose it because it was quiet and it was so loud. The waitress seamed super annoyed. I am deaf in one ear and this was the best place so I could hear and actually enjoy the place. I didn’t feel her attitude was justified. If she would have kept pushing the point it was going to get pushed to the manager as I have several disabilities and I don’t use them, but I do choose certain places to sit to help manage them. My expectation is for the waitress to be kind and shouldn’t matter if it’s two people, four people, or six people. Should be glad to have a customer and business.
My wife and I got a Knob Creek on the rocks to start off.
We also each got the old fashion, one with tots and one with fries. The burgers have really good flavor, but wasn’t even hot. The bun was super dry and I wound up leaving the bun and eating the burger. The tots were really good, but also not hot. My wife’s was the same. The French fries were good, but not hot.
I didn’t say anything to the waitress because based on her attitude it was just going to make the night worse and I was out to have a nice evening.
I have been here several times and this is my first bad experience here and I hope it’s not a sign that the restaurant is going downhill. This is one of my go to spots in Des Moines to get a great burger and it should be fire on a Friday night. Fresh and delicious, not cold and dry, is the new requirement, an angry waitress to complete the Angry Goldfish vibe?

This was our first time here and it didnt disappoint. I got the pulled pork sandwich with fries and my daughter got the cheeseburger with a side of poutine. We loved that poutine could be a choice for a side with an additional charge. It started to get pretty busy after we arrived. The service was great and the ambience was good. We will return.

We stopped here after the Iowa State Fair. The food was excellent and the portions were a great value. Comfort food at its finest. Plus, the environment is cozy and the banter with the bartender was much appreciated – he provided great service.

We stopped by to try a new place. The food was delicious. I ordered the pull pork sandwich, husband ordered the old fashioned burger. Great drink menu husband ordered the peach cobbler and fruit loops shot. Really liked them.

The place was kind of a cool local spot which looked like it would be a cool place to hang out. The music was way too loud for lunch even for a bar and grill. I don’t say this lightly because I love loud music. The music that was playing was an awesome mix though I had the brisket sandwich and I would not recommend it they cut it into cubes and soaked it in a sweet BBQ sauce. It was way too much sauce. The tots were great. My daughter had fish and chips and she really liked it, that’s why it was given an extra star.

First time eating here and pleasantly surprised! The spinach salad with bacon dressing was amazing and huge! Also had the chopped pork sandwich. The pork was good Iowa pork and topped with the best coleslaw I’ve ever tasted and spicy! Yum! Definitely will be returning! Oh and our waitress was attentive and the atmosphere was 2 thumbs up!!

Neighborhood bar and eatery vibes here in the best of ways. We came here on a Wednesday night to grab some food and a couple drinks after work. What a great vibe. Our waitress – Macy was very attentive, friendly, and down to earth. The drinks weren’t expensive and neither was the food but the quality and taste were a notch above. I’d recommend this place to anyone looking for a non-pretentious spot for some great food and drinks. Shannon, the manager, came by to every table to ensure all the guests were happy with their experience. Touches like this truly desperate the greats from the rest of the pack. We’ll be back again.

Love the name and the fish and chips were very tasty. Perfectly crispy and not greasy at all. Parmigiano coated fries and an excellent pasta salad. Only downside for us was the loud music, we realize it’s a bar and everyone was having a great time so no real complaint just a matter of taste. Wait staff was very friendly and answered all our questions about the restaurant. Sounds like they accommodate fish Fridays during lent which is wonderful. If we are in the area again we would definitely would eat here again.
