No-frills sandwich joint popular for its Philly-style cheesesteaks, plus cold subs & fried sides.

I wish I could do 4.5 stars. It was almost perfect. To get the true Philly feel there needs to be a whiz option. The steak was great. The bread was fine, could have tasted/felt fresher, could have been warmed up. The bread on my cheesesteak was cold. You won’t get that at Jim’s. Overall very good, but just doesn’t get quite to the real Philly cheesesteak experience. The onion rings were fine. I get why people really like them. They’re unique. I’ve never seen onion rings done with this kind of breading/batter. Not my style but I get why people would like them.

Place is superb, even down to the low-key, simple, hole in the wall place that it is. I find the atmosphere here to be relaxed and love seeing the classic menu and decor. Great, just as it is. I had read that one reviewer found the atmosphere to be run-down: quite the contrary: it’s cozy and worth visiting for a great sandwich. Will certainly return!

I really do love this place—the food is so good. The only reason I gave 4 stars instead of 5 is because the inside feels a bit run-down (think hole-in-the-wall, dive vibes). Personally, I don’t mind, but I get a little embarrassed when I bring friends along.
That said, the food more than makes up for it. The English chips come out piping hot and fresh from the fryer every time. My go-to is the cheesesteak loaded with onions, peppers, mushrooms, tomatoes, and pickles—absolute perfection. Add a side of au jus if you are into that (I know I am, lol).
Overall:
Food: 10/10 (delicious, but definitely on the greasy side—so be prepared!)
️ Atmosphere: 5/10 (don’t come for the decor, come for the food).
Would still 100% recommend for the taste alone!

Fries are big and fresh cut but taste plain could maybe use some salt but nonetheless still really good. Also got a 6 inch pepper steak with mayo, hot peppers and onions (no lettuce, tomato or pickle). Only reason I gave 4 stars is for the fries lacking salt but you can get salt packets and salt it yourself so I’ll probably still give 5 stars because it’s good either way I wanna try something else but like the pepper steak a lot so I keep getting it

We’ve been to The Philadelphian many times and usually have great experiences, which is why this visit was disappointing.
We called in an order for a 4” Pepper Steak with extra hot peppers and a 6” Pepper Steak with hot peppers added. According to the menu, the Pepper Steak comes with steak, sautéed bell peppers and onions, and provolone cheese, which is exactly what we wanted, plus the added hot peppers.
On the phone, we were asked “Everything on it?” for each sandwich. We said yes, assuming that meant the standard ingredients listed on the menu.
When we got home, both sandwiches had mayonnaise, lettuce, dill pickles added. Those toppings are not listed as part of the Pepper Steak, so this was unexpected.
When I went back to clarify, I was told that “everything on it” includes all of the listed garnishes: mayonnaise, lettuce, tomatoes, dill pickles, onions, and hot peppers and that we would need to order it “plain” to avoid them. That was confusing, especially since the sandwich didn’t even include all of those toppings (for example, there were no tomatoes), which made the meaning of “everything” unclear. Additionally, we’ve always understood “plain” to mean removing the cheese and peppers that already come on the sandwich. We’ve ordered this same item the same way before without issue, so this caught us off guard.
Since the misunderstanding wasn’t resolved, I chose to pay to have one sandwich remade but didn’t feel comfortable spending more to replace both.
We’ll still come back because we usually enjoy the food, but clearer wording such as “Would you like any additional toppings?” would really help avoid confusion in the future.

The Philadelphian is one of my favorite sandwich shops of all times! The Hot Combo with everything is amazing! Their cheese steak sandwiches are also amazing, but I am partial to the Hot Combo. And the fries and English Style Chips are delicious and plentiful. My only recommendation is to order to go if the environment makes a difference to you. This is definitely a hole in the wall, but I like it!

I’m going to come right out and say it: this place is ALL about the food. No candles or kitch to build ambiance. FOOD. And you know what? That’s the only way I would choose to have it. You could order anything on the menu and you’d enjoy what you get. If you know what you want on your sandwich, ask for it. And whatever side(s) tickle your fancy, you’ll get a huge portion, and they’ll be great! I like spicy foods, so I always get the hot combo (sandwich), but the usual proteins are all available. Next, choose the length of your sandwich. Most folks will probably find a 6″ sandwich and a side to be PLENTY of food, but hearty appetites can opt for as long a sandwich as you think you can ingest. Only one size drink, so that’s one less decision you’ll need to make. The staff are friendly and they’re consistently busy, so be nice and let them keep moving – this place can get crowded… Make way. If you’re anywhere near The Philadelphian, and in the mood for a sandwich, do yourself a favor and stop in for a bite – you’ll be glad you did.

Awesome! Food was really good. BEFORE YOU ORDER: PORTIONS ARE HUGE! PAY LESS AND GET THE SMALLER SIZE. I ate 1/2 of my 12 inch, it’s huge. Fries are great, macaroni bites were solid. Loved the food. A very strong 8.9/10 rating on the cheesesteak. Loved it and will come again!

SANDWICHES- 5/5 sooo good. Flavorful, action packed. Fantastic.
SIDES- 0/5 Fries, onion rings, mac & cheese bites were not good at all. No flavor & soggy. Zero crunch & tough to chew.
CUSTOMER SERVICE- 5/5 Workers were kind, great energy & gave great service
ATMOSPHERE- 3/5 Def needs upgrading but the sandwiches and customer service surpass the “look” of the place.
OVERALL- 4/5. The sides can be fixed. The sandwiches are the main show and they’re great. Customer service is marvelous. We’ll be back for the sandwiches.
