Overall a great experience, will come back when in the area.
This was our first experience at JA in Nashville. The peim rib was outstanding and super flavorful with excellent creamy horseradish! The salad was fresh and crisp!
The atmosphere was a bit down, not a good lighting and constant in and out of strange people who congregated in the parking lot.
Don’t pass up the 5oz Fillet Mignon with a crab cake. The steak was lightly and deliciously seasoned with a perfect crust and the crab cake came with a thin panko crust on top. The delicate crab cake came with a slight spicy seasoning I found to be just right. Finally, the mash potatoes will make your mom cry, making her think she failed; they are that good.
We borh got the steak frites and both were disgusting. Both steaks were grey and had zero crust or flavor besides the butter and had large chunks of unrendered fat that were entirely inedible. Ridiculously bad and a total waste of money.
Service wasn’t very good either.
My friend ordered mac & cheese, which they said was unavailable, and I wanted the smoked salmon dip, which was also out. She ended up ordering the Nashville hot chicken sandwich, and the wait was so long that the bartender actually had to go back to the kitchen to check on it and bring the order out herself.
I will say our bartender was great; friendly, attentive, and clearly doing her best to take care of us. The issue wasn’t her service; it was the overall inconsistency with food availability and the delay from the kitchen.
What made it more confusing was that this was a Sunday evening and there wasn’t even a long wait or heavy crowd. I’ve visited other J. Alexander’s locations at much busier times and never experienced issues like this. Even the guest sitting next to us was having problems with her order, so it seemed like it just wasn’t a good night overall.
For a restaurant with J. Alexander’s reputation, this was really disappointing.
We stated that we had a reservation. She got mad that we were too early. We arrived at 645 for a 7pm reservation. She literally got red in the face and started huffing and puffing. She then told us to wait over there and said I will mark that you arrived. We finally got seated and after ordering our drinks. She asks do we want to move to another smaller table in the back. She is like do you girls want to move to a different table. My mother is a 50yo doctor!! We refused. This lady had the nerve to persist…stating the other party didn’t tell her how many people were in their party!! How is that our fault or business??? I have never been treated so poorly. This hostess doesn’t like Black people and she felt that we were kids, so she could treat us poorly. Sorry, my Black doesn’t crack!! She was completely overwhelmed and complaining consistently that it’s soooo crowded. She works at a busy, popular restaurant. She really needs to find another job. She literally can’t take the heat, so she needs to get out of the kitchen!! I have been to the JAlexander in Oak Brook several times; The treatment at this location was horrendous.
