Il Grottino a Testaccio completely lived up to the hype.
I had one of the best pizzas I have ever eaten, thanks to a server recommendation that was absolutely not a lie. The crust was light with the right amount of char, the toppings were fresh and perfectly balanced, and the flavors were spot on.
The prices are incredibly cheap for the quality you get, which makes it even more impressive. Just make sure you arrive early, because there is usually a queue and it is well worth the wait.
This is the kind of place that gives you a real reason to come back to Rome, and I definitely will.

We stumbled into Il Grottino on a lively evening in Testaccio, and it was buzzing from the moment we walked in—tables packed with locals and visitors alike, creating that perfect, energetic Italian trattoria atmosphere. The space feels incredibly cozy despite the crowd, with warm lighting, wooden accents, and a welcoming hum of conversation that makes you feel right at home. It’s the kind of place that’s always busy for good reason, but they handle the rush without missing a beat.Service was a standout: our waiter was super attentive, friendly, and knowledgeable, checking in just enough to make us feel special without hovering. The staff clearly love what they do, chatting with guests and keeping the energy high—top-notch teamwork all around. We went for the Margherita pizza and Fungi pizza, both arriving hot and fresh from what looked like a blazing wood-fired oven. They were good—thin crust, quality toppings, and nicely charred—but honestly not quite what we expected for a spot with such hype; we were hoping for that mind-blowing, next-level flavor punch. Still solid and satisfying. The real hero was the tiramisu for dessert—creamy, perfectly boozy, with just the right dusting of cocoa. It was outstanding to end the meal.Overall, Il Grottino nails the cozy, vibrant vibe and delivers great service in a super busy setting.

Original roman pizza with a very thin dough in a simple, local place. Fair prices, good quality, fast service. No reservations- Expect waiting lines after 8 pm but they move fast due to many tables inside (lower level is quite spacious). 2 pizzas, green salad, tomato bruschetta, water and ½ liter red wine around 32 Euro. Be aware that the pizza provola e speck has an intense smoky taste.

Delicious, and well worth the wait! The specialty is pizza, and they definitely have their own style of dough – almost flatbread. Staff is friendly, the atmosphere is cozy (especially in the cellar), the house wine is great (from Lazio, of course).

Beautiful roman restaurant. They serve amazing thin-crusted pizzas which are frankly some of the best I’ve ever had. The prices are great value and the quality doesn’t suffer. It’s far from touristy- clearly catering more towards a local crowd which gives it a wonderful authentic atmosphere. Highly recommend visiting if you love think crusted pizzas and affordable high quality pastas

This is such a shame to have to review like this. The pizzas were amazing. However, the service was awful. The older Italian waiter had no time for us and accused me of ordering the wrong pizza for my partner when I had specifically showed him which one and he even repeated it back. The pizza my partner had should have had ham and prosciutto on it but had nothing. When he decided to stop accusing me, he literally went back to the kitchen and added 2 slices of prosciutto on top with no ham. I completely never expected him to understand me as a Brit but even used Google translate to help. He seemed to treat us pretty differently from the locals which was upsetting. Like I said, the pizza was amazing. Very reasonably priced too. The service however left a sour taste in our mouths.

Food is excellent. Nothing we tried was not up to expectations. Most far exceeded. The pizza crew are a sight to behold if you get the opportunity. Friendly staff, excellent food, and a very lively restaurant. Come early unless you want a considerable wait.
Service is only marked down because the place is so busy that you might have to wait a while for most anything. The atmosphere marking is mostly because they have no issue sitting you at a table with a random couple you’ve never met. This can be a bit of a challenge for people unfamiliar with the culture. There’s nothing wrong with it, they just want you to be fed.
You WILL enjoy the delicious Roman food. But keep an open mind if you’re sat next to a wonderful old Roman couple out on a date night. They just might surprise you.

I learned about this place thanks to the YouTube channel Cocina con Ruben, so I had to try it. I loved it.
Their pizzas have a paper-thin crust and are deliciously made right in front of you. Their tiramisu is wonderful.
This place is very authentic and may not cater to everyone. I don’t think they have a menu in English and their waiters’ English is very limited. Don’t arrive there after 7.30, or there will be a long line. It’s not at all touristy and that’s part of the experience.
