Loons Cafe St. Paul offers a spacious sports bar atmosphere with classic americana food combined with some elevated, award-winning dishes. The dining area is large with plenty of TV’s to catch the game, and large windows for looking out at St. Paul’s historic downtown.
The Grape Ape Cocktail was sweet and light, with a little more of a lemony taste than its name would suggest. It also wasn’t too strong, leaving plenty of wherewithal to enjoy the rest of the meal.
The Chilli Sampler was the highlight, however. I was able to try the chicken chili ala Ski Dad, pinto diablo chili, and Minnesota wild rice soup. The chicken chili ala Ski Dad and pinto diablo chili both had a rich creaminess with the chicken chili had a barbeque robustness that pinto diablo substituted with tangy heat. The wild rice soup meanwhile was savory and a nice palette cleanser between the two. Together with the toast they were extremely filling. We also tried the Mr. Pete’s Burger, which tastewise reminded me of a much better big mac.
Loons Cafe St. Paul is great for those looking for a lifted sports bar vibe and for whom grabbing a delicious meal is as or more important the game itself.

Great vibe. Chili was extremely rich. It’s good but I actually prefer more savory, more tomatoie. Of the Chili the ground Beef one was the best. The steak and chicken gave the chili a dryness I didn’t love. Best thing was the ribs, 5/5 very smoky, flavorful and fatty. Everything else was okay.

We ate dinner here on a Wednesday in July 2025. It was raining so the patio was closed. They have a very Minnesota menu that works beautifully! We started with drinks, she got a Jameson Orange Mule and I got an Old Fashioned. Both were prepared just right. For our meal she got the Walleye tacos and I got the Chili Sampler. The sampler is 3 selections (about 1 cup each) that you pick from their List. I selected the Pecos (hot), Pinto Diablo, and wild rice soup. All 3 were amazing but I loved the Pecos chili. It is made with diced beef and had a great flavor. The pinto Diablo has ground beef and great flavor but is slightly sweet. It was sweeter than I like but it did not stop me from eating it! The wild rice soup was amazing. I have had MN wild rice soup at other restaurants and it is usually cream based but the Loon soup was clear broth and so refreshing, my wife and I really liked it. The Walleye tacos were served with salsa and mango habanero sauce. The chips were homemade and were baked so not oily or over salty.
The noice level was low and so it was easy to talk. The server was speedy and friendly. The entire dining experience was most enjoyable. We look forward to eating here again!

The ambience inside is above average, but I was disappointed with the food quality. My wife thought her meal was fine, but I went with chicken strips and fries instead of my usual burger or steak. Normally at a new place I’d order something more substantial, but I wasn’t in the mood, and I find you can often gauge a restaurant’s quality by whether they use hand-breaded chicken or frozen products. There’s a diner near us that makes an excellent chicken sandwich because they hand-bread and beer-batter their chicken. This was clearly the frozen kind. Chewy and not good at all.
Drink options were more limited than expected. They poured one glass of Eagle Rare, then ran out, and only had maybe 10 bourbons total.
Overall, an average experience. I’d be willing to try again.

I have stopped into the loon several times. It’s in a fantastic location next to several bars and restaurants. It’s next to several venues such as the Palace Theater and kjs hideaway. You can easily catch a show and then stop here or go here before a show. There are a few parking ramps and lots I’m the area that are within walking distance. In the wintertime, the surroundings are lit and decorated in lights bringing that holiday spirit to brighten the mood.
As you walk in the front door you are greeted and you see a large bar with ample seating. When there are events in the area this place gets very busy but on nonevent days, it can be slow. The Friday night was very slow but enjoyable. The bartender was very kind and curious and assisted me right away. The wine-by-the-glass selection is very good and their beer selection is fantastic. I ordered my usual order the Buffalo chicken wrap and it was fantastic. The server who brought it out was very friendly as well. The few times I have been to this location I have had fabulous service and that is the number one reason to return.
There are lots of tables of all sizes so they can accommodate parties of all sizes. The place is very clean and well-kept for its size and besides the beer and wine, they do have a very good selection of other great items.

Decently cute cafe in a nice part of town! Our waitress was friendly, and the service was fast. Despite the menu being somewhat small and limited, we both found something we liked. The chili was full of flavor, and while I normally don’t go for chicken sandwiches, I really enjoyed the Eight Ball Deluxe. The chicken was perfectly tender and moist!

I was pleasantly surprised with this place. We have lived in the area for the past 5 months and have walked by several times with the intent to try. And Im glad we finally did! The food was delicious, I was in the mood for chicken wings but they didn’t have boneless options so i had chicken tenders and had them dress them with the dragon sauce. They were SO good! And the fries were perfectly fried and delicious. The atmosphere was good with no wait as we went at 2pm on a Saturday. I would definitely come back again!

If you’ve not been to The Loon Cafe in St Paul, great place, awesome food, and tremendous service… Cheryl and Laurie started the evening off with some Grape Apes… a drink of which the Loon is the home of… we ordered the Walleye Fingers and Fries to start with – very tasty. Laurie ordered Chicken Fingers and fries from the appetizer menu for her meal, easily enough for a meal and very good. Cheryl ordered the Loon Addict Special- lightly breaded chicken breast grilled and topped with fresh mushrooms, melted Swiss cheese, shredded lettuce and mayo on a toasted onion bun. She normally doesn’t get overly excited about chicken, but loved it. Jerry and I both ordered a full rack of Ribs… the Ribs were to die for… fall off the bone and with excellent flavor-didnt even use the sause – which was also excellent (dipped my fries in it). My Loon Manhattans were excellent… fast attentive service and a great atmosphere. Awesome time all around and will be goingback!!!

Honestly, I had pretty low expectations for the restaurant due to the menu being fairly short and due to how empty it was on a Saturday but the food was amazing !! My friend and I went here due to a few other options being closed, and I was very pleased with my experience. The waiter was extremely nice and attentive. My friend and I were super indecisive and he was very patient with us and explained everything thoroughly. I ordered the Nachos and my friend order the wings and fries. The food came out relatively quickly and it was hot and delicious!! Everything about the meal and drinks were perfect! I would highly recommend and would definitely return.
