Los Portales is everything I would expect from a Mexican restaurant in Brownsville, Texas, and it’s way up here in Grand Rapids Michigan!
El Plato Loco es perfecto!
I also highly recommend the house margarita, but be sure to have a DD cause it will set you on your patootey!
Could use some vegetarian options. Margaritas are great too. Flight looks amazing. Will definitely try next time. Shrimp Diablo is spicy. Buyer beware.
We started with the classic chips and salsa. The chips were crispy and fresh, a great start to the meal. The salsa, while good, could use a bit more oomph to elevate the flavors. It’s mild, so if you like a bit of a kick, you might want to ask for something spicier. The Guac is thick and creamy and also very pleasant.
The highlight of our meal was definitely the Burito Loco. It was packed with delicious proteins and bursting with flavor. Every bite was satisfying and tasty. The portion size was generous, making it a great value for the price.
Paula’s attentive and friendly service really stood out. My partner and i had such a great time with her. It’s clear that she cares about her customers and enjoys what she does, which added to the positive experience.
Overall, Los Portales is a solid choice for Mexican food in Grand Rapids. There are a few minor areas for improvement, like giving the salsa a bit more punch, but the quality of the food and the excellent service make it a place worth visiting. It’s a clear recommendation and a solid 5-star experience!
Sadly, that’s were the excitement ends. The food was flavorless, cold and greasy/watery. The tomatoes and cheese had more flavor than the beans, meat, and homemade chips. Paid $48 and ALL of the food was cold and lacking flavor or seasonings in general. Especially the “mild salsa” salsa, it tastes like watered down pizza sauce. Nothing giving me a salsa taste whatsoever. Had a to-go order and the service was stale, and uninviting. First and last time we will visit. Tacos El Cuñado on Plainfield is where I will spend my money.
I did spend 15+ years in the food business as a cook and pizza man,
Never have left a review on a food business cuz negatively impressed or taste,
But this place really got my attention and my time to type my experience,
Food and service was fantastic,
I did try the 3Amigos plate, without the Srims,do to healthy reason,
But my experience was extremely high,
Highly recommend it,
