Service is sloooooow. Took 10 minutes to get our drinks ordered (and food then) Been another 10min, still haven’t received my ice tea. 30min in, received our drinks finally. 45 min in, no appetizer. No food as we pass the hour mark. Resorted to doing crosswords on a phone to pass the time… sad..
You’d never think little place is so chic inside! Very nice, generally Asian decor, real candles on the tables, pretty little bar. The coconut soup is really yummy and that is what I’m basing my food rating on. We did have numerous other dishes, but I always remember the soup. Funky and coconutty.
Having grown up in the San Francisco Bay Area, I’m no stranger to what great, authentic Thai food should taste like. I now live in the Gorge, and couldn’t be any more excited that a Thai restaurant of this caliber has moved into Hood River! I eat here at least once a week on lunch breaks as I also work in Hood River. The wait staff are always friendly and are quick to provide cucumber-laden ice water which is absolutely refreshing on a warm, summer day. Service is attentive but not overbearing; I never feel like they are interrupting if I’m in mid-conversation with lunch companions.
Entreé orders during the winter time come with a complimentary clear, vegetable soup and a small side salad that are to die for! The salad roll appetizers are very fresh and very tasty and will definitely tide you over until your entree arrives.
Patrons can customize all dishes with their desired spice level from mild to Thai hot. I usually get the Thai hot and find it plenty warm for my palate. If even the Thai hot is not enough, a side of the newly introduced homemade chili oil should certainly be enough for most appetites. Side note – Mekong Thai is starting to sell this chili oil by itself!
My personal favorite dishes at Mekong Thai:
Drunken noodles (pad kee mao): fairly traditional Thai dish with broad rice noodles and lots of veggies in a soy-based sauce with meat (chicken, pork, beef, tofu) of choice
Thai Chili Fried Rice: a very flavorful fried rice with meat of choice
Kao Soi: crispy noodles in a creamy sauce with cabbage, carrots, bean spouts and a little mint
Crispy Fish Curry: breaded fried fish filets in a red curry sauce with bamboo shoots and other vegetables
Sauteéd Eggplant: one of my new favorite dishes, eggplant is served with meat of choice over rice
Oh I almost forgot! They also serve several flavors of homemade ice cream for dessert. My personal favorite is the coconut-flavored ice cream with pineapple chunks mixed in.
If you’re visiting Hood River, I highly recommend this gem of a restaurant wholeheartedly!
