From start to finish, my visit to Sushi Shin was a standout sushi experience. The intimate setting and elegant yet relaxed atmosphere set the tone right away — it’s the kind of place where you can settle in and focus completely on the food and service.

The omakase menu here is truly special, showcasing seasonal and beautifully sourced seafood — much of it imported from Japan — prepared in a way that highlights delicate flavors and expert technique. Each course felt thoughtfully curated, with attention to balance and texture that really elevated the meal. I especially appreciated the way the chefs explained the ingredients and dishes, making the experience both informative and engaging.

Service throughout the evening was attentive and gracious, striking the perfect balance between professional and personable. It’s clear the team prides itself on creating a memorable evening rather than just a meal — from the sake pairings to the pacing of the courses, everything felt intentional and well executed.

Overall, Sushi Shin is a fantastic choice for a special night out, a celebration, or any occasion where you want to indulge in high-end sushi with great service and a refined vibe. I left impressed and already thinking about my next visit. Thank you Chef Zhan!

An unforgettable omakase at Sushi Shin in Redwood City. Impeccable cleanliness, quiet precision, and an obsessive attention to detail set the tone from the first course to the last bite.

The flavors honor Japan with a subtle, thoughtful touch of Shanghai, refined and never overpowering. Each piece felt intentional and balanced, letting the fish speak while the technique elevated every moment.

Jason Zhan was masterful. His cutting precision, timing, and calm confidence were a masterclass in craftsmanship. This is omakase at its purest. Elegant, disciplined, and deeply satisfying.

The positives: when people are drinking, the atmosphere can be very fun. Some otsumami weren’t awful.

The negatives:

Very awkward experience if you don’t speak Chinese as the chef mainly focuses on Chinese guests. It’s not that he can’t speak English he just chooses not to mainly.

The sushi here is bad even for America standard. It makes sense they lost the Michelin star and I hope Michelin is more serious about where they give out stars for sushi. A big price tag =/= good sushi

This is my favorite Japanese restaurants in the Bay Area. Among all the top omakase ones it still stands out. You can tell that they use the freshest ingredients and the dishes are immaculate.

Our experience with Chef Jason and Sushi Shin was nothing short of the best sushi we’ve had in the Bay. The fish is extremely well prepared, and the sake pairings are on point with very rare offerings from Japan.

However, the appetizers really stand out from other shops. Chef Jason’s creativity around utilizing fresh ingredients and diverse preparation styles are unmatched, and make this place well deserving of the acclaim it gets.

We will be back.

The chef, Jason, puts on an excellent omakase experience. I’ve been here many times and he always puts out delicious seasonal delicacies and perfectly paired sake. I never leave disappointed! Highlights of my latest visit included Octopus, uni, lobster spring rolls and toro sashimi. Worth every dollar!

Another spectacular meal at this place last night! The appetizer courses were incredible staring a new dish the lobster spring roll and my first time trying greeneye, a fatty and delicious deep sea fish.

The fish were super high quality, well seasoned and I’m still thinking about that otoro. That lot of uni was great! And I was completely confused as to how the chef made noodles out of eel.

This is a great fusion of Japanese traditional sushi with Shanghainese flavor. I really love the chawan mushi, Shanghai Xinyue and the white sesame dessert.

Hidden gem that lives up to the hype! Finally made it out to Sushi Shin after hearing so many good things — and wow, it did not disappoint. The omakase was beautifully paced, and each piece felt like it had a story behind it. Super fresh fish, perfectly seasoned rice, and a few creative touches that still respected traditional techniques.

The chef and staff were so welcoming, explaining the ingredients and origins of each dish. It made the whole night feel personal and special. Loved the cozy, elegant atmosphere too — perfect for date night or celebrating something big.

Easily one of the best sushi spots I’ve been to in the Bay. Worth every penny, and can’t wait to go back again soon!

Honestly I thought it was just okay. It felt a bit overhyped since so many people had said it was amazing. We had booked out the entire space and even others in our group felt that the food wasn’t as good this time. The chef isn’t Japanese but that doesn’t necessarily mean it wouldn’t be authentic or traditional. It just didn’t quite impress me. Overall it was fine but I think there are better omakase options in the Bay Area. The price has also gone up so I probably wouldn’t go back.
