The good: they’re open again! The Blueberry Mint Margarita (although it’s WAY too small) and Cucumber Mint Mule are fantastic. There’s a different daily special Tuesday-Saturday. The Sweet Onion Teriyaki Roll is pretty good. Decent bourbon selection available.
The bad: You’ll be surprised with downtown Raleigh prices. It’s always a huge red flag when the online menu posted on a restaurant’s website doesn’t list prices, which makes any restaurant look sketchy from the get-go to people who are looking them up before considering whether or not to go. The cocktail menu IN the restaurant doesn’t even list prices! The Western Bacon Cheeseburger is way too sweet with not enough savory. Some of the items on the menu aren’t even available yet. There’s no wine menu whatsoever (although they do have wines available).
The ugly: the Bacon Spinach Dip appetizer & Ole Glory cocktail are really, really bad.
New ownership, new management, new menu, a few kinks to work out still… keep an eye on this place and give them some grace (hence the 3rd star) while they continue to figure things out.

The Wendell Cheesesteak was honestly one of the best tasting cheesesteaks I’ve ever had. My only complaint is that for $15 it felt a little stingy on the meat, but the flavor was so good I still wasn’t disappointed.
The Western Bacon Cheeseburger was very generously portioned by comparison and a big hit.
Fries for both sandwiches were top notch.
The Buffalo dip appetizer is a touch on the oily side but I loved that it came with fresh made pork rinds since I’ve never had it that way before or even thought about trying the two together but worked super well.
I wish the Wednesday Burger and Bourbon special was a Burger and Beer, but it was a good deal either way.
Service was also very good.

Amateur hour meets penny pincher. A $15 fish and chips plate should be portioned for a grown man. Typically, restaurants cheat you by filling the plate with french fries to make up for the really skinny fish. This restaurant couldn’t be bothered.
I went because all the reviews mentioned shrimp and grits. It wasn’t on the menu for me. I had an old-fashioned that was $14 and fish and chips was 15.
I’m not full, my drink was served in a glass that was only 2/3 full. Only after being served did the bartender bother telling me that an old-fashioned requires a larger pour so instead of $10 that she originally quoted me it’s now 14.
Also, is it sanitary to store the paper towels 3 feet away from the men’s toilet?

I hate to do this to a small business but I just left. The food was inedible and cold, the drinks took forever to get to us and I didn’t see my server for a solid 20-30 minutes. I understand that a kitchen can be behind and there are more people than usual. But when the food is cold, it’s just sat in a window too long. There was a blonde female that was working that came across as intoxicated she wasn’t our server but it was obvious as she struggled to get through a sentence to the table next to us. Our server took 50% off of our tab which still was us paying full price for 2 beers as well as 1 drink which the second drink was gross according to my wife. My son finished his burger and complained of a stomach ache after and said his burger was cold but he was hungry. So I paid $36 for 2 beers and 1 drink essentially my son ate his burger like it was dog food because it took an hour and a half to get our food. Should have just bought a 6 pack stayed at the house and not spent an hour and a half waiting for food. At Smithfield’s now and will spend $10 on food without a miserable experience.

It’s Friday night, our four kids are away for the evening, and we decided to take a walk down to the newly reopened Farmers and Merchants for an impromptu dinner date.
The live music was obscenely loud, the inside seating area too hot, stuffy, and claustrophobic, and it had just rained, so all the outside seating was wet.
We asked to be seated outside and were initially told patio seating was closed, but Ashley volunteered to take care of us and went out of her way to make us comfortable.
She dried off the table and chairs, gave a great overview of the menu, made the perfect drink recommendation, and gave us incredible service throughout our entire meal.
We had the bacon spinach dip as our (way too small for $9) appetizer and it tasted delicious; our only minor issue was that we had to use forks to eat it with the fried bowtie pasta.
The western bacon cheeseburger, Wendell cheesesteak, fries, and the weekend special F&M Mac and cheese were absolutely perfect.
So, we’re giving five stars for service, three for atmosphere, since it was perfect once we were seated outside but the inside was unbearable, and four stars for the food.

Say “GOODBYE” to Merchants and Farmers and “Hello” to the Twisted Cow! It seems a branding change was a long time coming for the slightly soiled “Merchants and Farmers” reputation. It has clearly had its Ups and Downs and its openings and closings, since it was first brought to life by its original owner and creator, Sigurd Westerlund.
The twisted cow seems to have adopted a much-improved bar food menu and a craft cocktail menu which supposedly incorporates locally sourced ingredients. Perhaps they come to the realization the competition down the street has been knocking it out of the park with their own craft cocktails for months, and doing so without breaking the customers bank? Of course, I would expect to pay exorbitant prices for a drink in Manhattan, but surely NOT in Wendell.
A burger and fries for under 15 bucks, not a bad deal, if only it would come out as ordered. But even if the twisted cow was an upscale bar, those cocktail prices are still too high for Wendell NC. Two doors down I can get equal or better within an appropriate price range. Cheers!

Truly unfortunate first visit here. Called in our order and was told it would be 45 minutes. Got there 45 minutes later and they had unfortunately given my order to another person and had to remake our order. After about 20 minutes I was told they were now out of one of the dips we ordered (unfortunately the one we really wanted to try) so it had to be substituted. After waiting another 25 minutes our order was being bagged up and I was told they were putting the creme brulee on top (we ordered Southern Style Cheesecake) so I said we hadn’t ordered that, which they responded yeah it’s creme brulee cheesecake (which isn’t on the menu.) I still wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt due to current circumstances and them being a new restaurant. Unfortunately when I got home and opened the food the chips (which I had seen pictures of others eating) must have run out as well and they substituted them for what I can only describe as gas station nachos (see photo). Was really hoping for a good experience and good food in Wendell. Hopefully we can get back here after they are open for a while and try it again and remove this review!

The food was absolutely amazing! I mean, probably the best food my family and I have had in the Raleigh area. The whipped honey goat cheese and warm cornbread app was delish. I had the shrimp and grits, and it was perfectly seasoned and well-portioned. My son and girlfriend had the porkchop with apple chutney and sweet potatoes, and they were all seasoned and cooked to perfection. My daughter had the baked Mac-n-cheese with brisket, and she ate every noodle. My girlfriend’s fineky sons shared the baked bbq chicken with green beans and mashed potatoes, and they ate every bite. The ambience is that of a modern tavern, very clean, excellent service, and AMAZING food. The portions are generous, the price reflects the quality, and we will 100% definitely be back in the near future.

Our group of 4 went here on a Tuesday night. The service was great, atmosphere was relaxed, and the food was awesome! We tried the burger, turkey club, and cheesesteak. We will be coming back, for sure.
