RFD Franklin, located in the heart of historic downtown Franklin, features freshly prepared innovative cuisine based on traditional favorites. The name RFD Franklin is a tribute to the building’s postal heritage recognizing a time when “Rural Free Delivery” was a very important method of communication to unite the nation. The letters in the name of this mail system were purposefully incorporated into the motto of “Real Food, Fresh Dining”. Some have suggested the meaning could also be Reservations for Dinner!”

I’ll start with the good – the venue has a lot of character. A former post office, with lots of stuff to remind you of it’s former days. Very unique.
And I loved the private table inside the old safe.
The limited staff (hostess, server, and trainee) didn’t cover the large space well, even though there were only us and just three other tables.
For example, when we arrived, there was no one around to sit, us for a long while. Eventually,I had to enter the kitchen to find someone.
The food was a flop.
I ordered the wedge salad (which shows on the menu under “large salads”). In fact, the server suggested to share it.
What arrived from the kitchen wasn’t any wedge, just two bite-size prices of lettuce (one was the stem, so shouldn’t have been served at all), a few strings of pickled onions, and one chery tomato sliced in half. What on earth was that?
Then I had the vegetarian pasta. The only noticable flavor was garlic. Everything else was blend.
Overall- pretty bad.
The only reason I didn’t send back both dishes was that I was with other people and didn’t want to keep them waiting until another dish is prepared and served.
But I did have to eat ice cream when I got back home, to get rid of the heavy garlic aftertaste.
It is sad that such a venue, with so much potential, has such a disappointing performance in the kitchen.
For an appetizer we ordered southwest egg rolls. They were delicious and were the only part of our experience that was pleasant.
For our meals, I had the tomato basil pasta and my husband had the Cajun pasta. Zero flavor on both. My husband had even less flavor than mine which I don’t know how it’s even possible. It was basically just tasting the noodles. So so bland. Pasta from fazolis is even better than this was.
Our service was not good. I had to ask for a refill after waiting 10 minutes of being out of my drink. At this point there was only one other table there. When we were done eating, we waited another 20 minutes before ever receiving our ticket. There were 2 other tables at this point. Then we waited more than 30 minutes for our server to come back and take our card to pay. At this point another table came in, had their drinks, ordered their food and received their meal well before we were able to pay. Our total time waiting to leave was almost an hour and and we were there for a total of 1 1/2 hours. Will never go back.
I got the scallops and it was 4 scallops and maybe two pieces of asparagus and a few leaves of spinach.
My wife and I also sat unnoticed for extended periods of time (especially when we first arrived) and the restaurant wasn’t very busy, nor did it look understaffed.
Overall it wasn’t a bad dinner, it just wasn’t that great either.
