Ping’s Bistro Warm Springs made quite a splash when it first opened in Fremont. Their Yunnan-style cuisine was something you didn’t see much of in the area a few years ago, and the flavors were genuinely impressive. Even last year, there were still long lines out the door.

When we visited today—on a Saturday and Valentine’s Day—we were surprised to find no wait and the restaurant was only half full. The food quality remains solid, so I don’t think it’s a matter of taste declining.

In my view, there may be two main factors. First, they recently began charging an 18% mandatory service fee. Second, the menu prices have increased noticeably, with many dishes now priced above $30. For lunch, we ordered just two dishes and the total came close to $120, which feels quite steep.

It seems this pricing strategy may have discouraged many of their previous customers. Meanwhile, the newly opened Sichuan hot pot restaurant next door was completely packed, with a long line outside.

It’s unfortunate to see the shift, as the food is still good. I hope they can find the right balance between pricing and customer experience moving forward.

Absolutely one of the best Chinese meals I’ve had in the Bay Area.

We ordered the spicy noodle soup, stir-fried beef, and seasonal greens .everything was full of flavor and cooked perfectly. The broth was rich and comforting with just the right level of heat, and the beef dish was tender, aromatic, and deeply satisfying. Even the greens were done beautifully — fresh, vibrant, and not overly oily.

You can really tell this is food made with care and authenticity, not watered-down flavors. Portions are generous, the food comes out hot, and the overall experience feels warm and comforting.

If you’re looking for real, flavorful Chinese food (especially if you love spice), this place is a must-try. Will definitely be coming back.

Dude, my wife and I love your food so much, but we can’t afford it with 20%+ mandatory fees now my bad, I am so poor. Let’s break up with overall 3 stars. We will miss you and go to Hometown Kitchen and Jun’s Bistro, two good alternative restaurants for Hunan cuisine and Yunnan cuisine. See you lala.

Ping’s Bistro offers excellent Yunnan cuisine with authentic and bold flavors. I ordered a chicken appetizer and a spicy beef main course — both were flavorful and cooked to perfection. The spice level was just right, enhancing the rich taste of the dishes. Overall, a great experience for anyone who enjoys regional Chinese cuisine. Would definitely come again!

Very authentic Yunnan cuisine, a lot of variety of mushrooms cooked in different styles. The service is great, give us great recommendations and perfect size. The dishes are in very large portions.

As a Yunnan native, I can attest the food is authentic and delicious!
My favorite is Stir-fried mushroom, green pepper & ham, it’s almost THE taste of Yunnan cuisine. We also liked the fried pork ribs w/ naimi sauce, grilled fish, mint beef wrap, and 贡菜. Every dish was authentic and brought up memory of my hometown…
Definitely come and try, you won’t be disappointed!!

We came here for the lunar new year celebration. One of my colleagues is from Yunnan and testified that the Yunnan food here is authentic.

We ordered mint beef, which is refreshing.
The clay pot rice is the best of the day. Rice cake is not bad. A little too salty and spicy. Grilled fish has a really large portion.

$150 for 5 people. $30/pp. recommend for group of people.

So fresh, tastes just like a home made meal!
The beef with pickled cabbage, mushroom fish soup and ham fried rice were all delicious, not too heavy and we’re very fragrant. Nice level of spice

We came here mainly for sweet & sour mandarin fish 松鼠桂鱼, it’s really great! The deep fried sweet & sour lotus root with shrimp 糖醋藕夹 and bake ube with mozzarella cheeses are also very delicious!

Overall, it’s very tasty. The service is also very quick. The only thing is most of the cuinsine are spicy, there isn’t many choices if you’re not a big fan of spicy food.

After calibration, now it is as good as Fremond flagship restaurant. Less options though.

Update: now it is not Hunan style but Yunnan style, still good, less spicy though.
