One of my favorites in DC! The cocktails are absolutely great, and the atmosphere is perfect for a romantic night out. My personal favorite is their steak tartare, to which I have not found an equal outside of Europe.

I am blown away by the total experience I had here. Almost felt like a dream walking into such a chic sexy environment being greeted by the nicest staff. Everyone was dressed well and the place looked tip top, clean, and unique. Everyone from the hostess to the server was exceptionally friendly and warm, made me feel right at home. As for the food, you can see the pictures below, and I can attest it tastes as good as it looks. They take great care in quality control and presentation. I felt like I was dining at a high rated Michelin restaurant. It was the exact experience I felt when I dined at other Michelin restaurants.

The filet mignon was the best I’ve ever had. They cooked it perfectly, which is apparently rare for restaurants in DC to do these days. The sauce was heavenly. I can’t say enough good things about the whole dish. It just melts in your mouth and you taste the high quality sourcing of the meat which I’m highly particular in. It’s rare for me to actually enjoy most steaks I eat out, so when I say it’s top, it means something.

And the lobster salad was so good I was blown away. I’m addicted to that dressing and need to try and replicate it at home. I only wish I had more room to try more. I’ll definitely be coming back.

The service and food were superior. It’s a beautiful setting with amazing food. We enjoyed the prix fixe menu which highlighted lobster, and the flavors were unbelievably delicious. I cannot recommend L’Avant-Garde enough!

I am amazed at the raving reviews – did we eat at the same place?! The ambiance, the service – all were great. Cocktail tasted good and interesting, then came the fennel salad. It looked pretty, but had no flavor. Not sure if the lack of dressing or any seasoning was intentional. Lobster bisque was bland, not creamy, just ok. Veal was just ok, nothing to write home about. NY Steak au Poivre- uneatable! Chewy, dense, yuck. Maybe we got unlucky with every dish we ordered, but how likely is that? Maybe the chef had a bad day…I don”t know, but in any event, will definitely not return nor recommend.

Unreal experience. Chef Sebastian is in a league of his own. Some standouts weee the foie gras, lobster entree, truffle Brie, and baguette with butter (the last was simple yet perfect). But truly every dish we tried was outstanding. For cocktails, we had the last word & tequila bouquet, all great. Cannot recommend this restaurant enough! Will definitely visit again, either for date night, special occasion, or just for a happening dinner spot.

Also, the atmosphere is very fun, intimidate, and swanky. I will definitely be back!

Lovely French restaurant in Georgetown with a modern and elevated ambiance. Gives you that Parisan vibe. Let’s get to the food, onion soup was different, very sweet, not savery like others, it was a bit overly sweet for me and had a bit much cheese compared to the soup. Fois grois was okay, typical fois grois. Had the Branzino for entree, fish could have been more moist and it was also covered with a lot of sauce that took away from the flavor of the fish plus the skin was slightly soggy instead of crispy.
The lamb skewer was my favorite, great flavors, only thing it was served with cold sides (on purpose) and it didn’t really pair well. Getting to desserts, tried the Peach and the Pavlova. Big portions for both, can definitely split one with another person. They were good but it had way too much whipped cream incorporated in the dessert, but at the same time it was the best whipped cream I’ve had so there’s that. Overall it’s a nice place I’d consider going back to for the vibe.

Some restaurants are worth the price, this sadly was not one of them. Gorgeous modern decor and subdued ambience could not offset the well intentioned but inconsistent menu and service.

We had the following items:

Artichokes Montesquieu (seared foie gras, summer truffle) – excellent start to the meal, presented as a salad, with each unique ingredient complementing one another well.

Maryland Crab Tartare (creamy fresh avocado with fresh basil, chives, and cucumber gazpacho) – another strong starter dish, extremely well fresh with generous slices of fresh avocado beautifully presented against a bed of delicate crab tartar. Solid flavor.

La Soupe à l’Onion – this is where it started to go downhill a bit. The bourbon added to enhance this dish did not have the desired effect. We found the soup to be overly sweet, lacking the savory punch that marks a great French onion soup. Disappointment for sure, would not recommend this item.

Le Foie Gras (cooked in terrine with cognac, griottines cherries, toasted brioche) – this was also underwhelming. These different ingredients did not come together well at all, and the terine itself fell a bit flat in terms of flavor.

Duck Breast (seared magret, red cabbage, duck demi-glace with cloves, caramelized gala apples) – I enjoyed the duck breast itself a bit more than my friend, they were very tender rare cuts, but agreed it could have a bit more flavor. The side items were unremarkable.

Le Filet Mignon Rossini (beef fillet center cut, foie gras and summer truffle, herbs smashed potatoes) – excellent cut of filet mignon, seared to near perfection. The accompanying sauce enhanced the flavor quite well. Again, the side items were unremarkable.

Authentic Crème Brûlée – we shared this for dessert, and as far as creme brulee’s go, it was solid but not particularly memorable. The custard could have been both richer and sweeter.

Their custom cocktail menu has some creative items. The one is sampled was the Ask the Colonel (Rye, Calvados, green Chartreuse, lime oil, bay leaf, mint, foam, Angostura bitters) and it was a refreshing, if slightly sweet summer cocktail.

Our server was very good overall, friendly, knowledgeable and fairly attentive. There were just some lapses with providing items like shared plates and a simple condiment that disrupted the pacing of the meal, even though we had telegraphed ahead that we planned to share the items.

Ultimately, I would not recommend L’Avant-Garde from a price to value perspective, though it was hardly a negative experience, solidly positive but just not positive enough.

I’ve been there twice and tried several dishes, each one was really good and full of flavor. I also love the quiet and romantic atmosphere; it makes the whole experience even more enjoyable. Definitely a place worth revisiting.

Celebrated my husbands birthday. Everything was great. The fireplace was really cozy. Food was amazing. Best truffle risotto that I ever had. The lobster appetizer was so full of flavor. The fish, scallops and the beef were superior. Drinks were on point and paired well with the food. The souffle was so light and tasty. The entire French meal was amazing! Will definitly go back soon.
