Burrrr – licious !
That’s my vibe as I stumbled upon the Thalay Thai restaurant on Staten Island after a snowstorm this year. It’s the perfect spot for an Asian winter warrior such as I, to refuel and charge on through the snow storm, with a delicious Thai meal.
I miss Asian food a lot during this time of year. Thalay was a great find, tucked away on Stuyvesant Road. The Thai eatery is walking distance from the Staten Island ferry point. It’s run by a (Thai) mum and pop (husband and wife) who are so kind and charming that they are one of my favourite parts of the visit to this restaurant. They ran a similar restaurant in Bangkok, Thailand and then Manhattan and are now located on Staten Island right by the St George Ferry!
It’s nothing fancy and a little bit of a hole in the wall spot. But it’s clean and brightly lit making it a nice place for a quick bite to eat indoors or take-away stop. .
Some of the things I liked about this restaurant are: the food which is delicious and quite authentic to me as a South East Asian resident for decades. I liked the basil fried rice and pad thai which I selected – both with shrimp! The portions are enormous at this restaurant at least for my little Asian tummy. The prices are so reasonable with a lunch special for USD 13 dollars which includes one main and one mini appetizer. A really good value for money special lunch.
My only point of recommended improvement could be less oil on the fried items like spring rolls and coconut shrimp which I ordered for starters. But a quick tissue to the rescue drenches up the extra oil for this very health conscious eater.
I highly recommend this spot for the kind service, quality of food, authentic Thai taste and value for money.
Enjoy your meal at this Thai restaurant!
We ordered the Tom Yum Soup with shrimp and the Chicken Pad Thai. They don’t do table service and the food comes with plastic forks and spoons, but once we took our first bites, we were honestly surprised. Wow — everything was incredibly tasty. The soup was full of flavor, and every bite of the Pad Thai was delicious. We enjoyed every spoonful and every bite.
It was a quiet Sunday afternoon, not many restaurants were open, and we decided to give this spot a try — and we’re so glad we did. The owners were very kind, and the food was amazing. Highly recommend this little hidden gem!
I was really disappointed with my experience at Talay. I ordered the Pad Ki Mow (Drunken Noodles) and it was extremely spicy even though there was no notice of spice level anywhere on the menu — and the smell was honestly unpleasant, almost like something had gone bad. The Massaman Curry had an overpowering cinnamon flavor that didn’t taste right, and the Tom Yum shrimp soup only came with three small shrimp. The chicken curry puffs were the only thing I actually enjoyed — those were tasty and well made. The Talay Dumplings (chicken and shrimp) were just okay, and the Mango juice didn’t taste like mango at all, more like generic nectar juice. Overall, I expected much better for the price and reputation. Definitely not ordering again.
