The food was classic and well executed some highlights were the french onion soup, foie gras parfait, duck and trout almondine. The foie gras was nice and smooth and accompanied the sourdough bread nicely. The duck breast was expertly cooked a medium rare. The crab legs were nice as well but expected that they would be cracked before served. The creme brulee was nice although the melted sugar was a little thick.
The service was very attentive and professional as expected for an upscale restaurant.
All the different dishes were very tasty and good portion sizes.
Veal tartar was very good.
Cod and clams were extraordinary.
Strawberry tart – was the best one I ever had!
100 recommended.
We came for the Winter Eats menu for a date night over the weekend and we were pretty disappointed with both the food and the service. My wife got the duck confit and the potatoes were under cooked. I got the seared tuna and it was overwhelming salty with no balance and the tuna wasn’t cooked with care. The seared edges were tough and chewy and overall unpleasant. I think the worst part was that the server didn’t do a quality check to see if everything was okay with the meal. Once we had dessert, the server asked how we enjoyed the dessert and we said we enjoyed the dessert but that the meals were not great (again she didn’t to a quality check during our dinner or even when she took our plates). She apologized that we didn’t enjoy the food and then brought the check and we paid, tipped, and left.
Overall it was fine but not what I have come to expect from the French. I think the price for the winter eats is more than fair, even a bargain, but I’m not looking for a bargain. I’m looking for delicious food that is cooked with love and service that makes me feel like my patronage is wanted.
I just want to preface with saying that the service was absolutely spectacular. The hostess and server genuinely brightened my day, and my server was very attentive! He noticed when I would be done each dish and came out swiftly to collect the dishes. I was very impressed with his timing and ability to set a comfortable pace for the meal. The patio is also so lovely.
Unfortunately, the food didn’t live up to my expectations.
The Cod Ceviche was refreshing, but I feel like it lacked in flavour in comparison with one that my cousin had made for me before. It needs more flavour to complement the lettuce and peas that were served with it.
The Lemon Basil Pasta was delicious and had so much flavour with the cashew cream, but it was overshadowed by the undercooked pasta. Call me dramatic, but undercooked and overcooked pasta are the bane of my existence!! I did let the server know so hopefully they improve on that for the next guest.
On a side note, I learned that this pasta shape was called Radiatori, named after “small radiator” which they resembled. I was impressed with this little tidbit of information that my server gave me after I asked what it was since I’d never seen it before.
I also ordered a cocktail, but I forgot to take a picture of the menu so I’m not sure what it was. It was one with egg whites. It was very strong and I couldn’t taste much besides the alcohol. I feel like it also resembled dish soap water for some reason! Maybe the smell? I was not a fan, but it was reassuring to know that they don’t jip you on the alcohol here, haha!
We ordered multiple drinks and were fairly happy with all of them. The wine selection was good and the mocktail I had was fantastic.
All of our apps were delicious and well worth the price. The steak and fries did not disappoint and my Cobb salad was the best I’ve ever had. I was shocked at how much food was on the plate, the quality of the ingredients, and the price.
In short, come for the food and stay for the atmosphere. This is a great spot where we felt well taken care of and had fun. It’s a great new spot we’re lucky to have and we’re excited for our next visit !
The appetizer salad with the Chardonnay vinaigrette will completely knock your socks off (Salade Maison). I even asked if I could buy some to take home—and they gave me a little container. It’s that good.
The burger with fig jam didn’t appeal to me at all when I read it on the menu, but I couldn’t have been more wrong. It was rich, flavorful, and truly decadent (The French Burger).
I would absolutely go back to The French. The hospitality staff were incredibly welcoming and kind, and they paid close attention to detail—even while handling a large group. An overall fantastic experience.
