We stopped by Big Al’s the other day for the first time. we were from out of town and on a three-day mini vacation with friends. We googled places to eat. Big Al’s popped up and we saw the reviews were good so we thought we would give it a try.
The servers were very friendly, and very attentive. There were five of us in our group the food was above par quality and very good. All of us enjoyed our meals. We met big Al in person. Very nice and friendly guy. We live an hour and 20 minutes away and decided we will have to come visit once in awhile the food was that good. Would definitely recommend the place, and encourage everyone to support their local Mom and Pop stores.

Stopped here after our appointment at the Treasurer’s office getting our license plates and boy am I glad we did. The owner was there and introduced himself then shared some of his business stories.
Based on Al’s suggestion, we ordered the housemade onion rings followed by the Combo: beef brisket sammy, pulled pork sammy, 3 fantastic smoked chicken wings, 1/4 track of ribs and 3 sides that his customers love: jalapeno creamed corn, burnt end baked beans and deviled egg potato salad (mustard/mayo) with some cole slaw to top the pulled pork sammy.
Everything was delicious. The onion rings might have been the least-greasy, crispy and most flavorful I’ve ever had, the creamed corn was great and the baked beans were thick, smoky and delicious. The smoked chicken wings were full wings, lightly seasoned with salt and pepper and were smoked to perfection.
I ordinarily don’t give 5* ratings to restaurants without cloth napkins and real silverware, but was very tempted to do so with this place. I really liked the quality of the food, the atmosphere, the service and the interaction with the owner. You won’t be disappointed if you stop here, as I will definitely be bringing visiting family and friends back to enjoy in the future.

Stopped in tonight, food quality was poor at best. Way overpriced for what you get. Maybe the worst BBQ in the Des Moines area. Ate at the South side location 3 years ago and it was very good and Big Al even came
To the table. Not sure if he sold the biz or just doesn’t pay attention to the Adel store, but I think maybe this location needs more over-site. Got the 2 meat combo, burnt ends dry, 2 ribs terrible, cornbread was so dry that even 2 butters couldn’t save it. I won’t be back a time soon sorry.

Service was excellent. Space inside is very dark and not a lot of seating. BBQ was good, they offer 2 BBQ sauces, a Sweet one and a HOT one. They bring out Ranch, Ketchup, Mustard, HOT BBQ Sauce, and Sweet BBQ Sauce with your dinner. Cornbread had a sweet flavor, but was hard like a rock. Onion straws would have been good, but they put coarse salt and pepper on top of them and they were just too salty, same goes for their Cheddar Curds. I like Cheddar Curds, but they were so salty I couldn’t even eat them. They were out of cobbler when we went, so we got the Bourbon Bread Pudding. It would have been good, but all I could taste was the bourbon, which kind of made the taste of the pudding burn going down. I don’t think all the alcohol was cooked out of the Bourbon sauce. Waitress was super friendly, really talkative, and attentive. Sweet Tea was blah. The tea should have been steeped longer, because what they brought me tasted like sweet water. Prices for regular menu items outside of BBQ was pretty steep. There were 2 bathrooms in the back and parking was either right out front of the building or maybe across the street at the Wells Fargo.

My husband and I have been here a couple times and everytime it has been fantastic. Food is fabulous and so tasty!! Both meats and sides are some of the BEST around!! My husband lived in Texas for over 15 years and he is very big on BBQ and he feels that this is some of the best BBQ since leaving there 10 years ago. Plus the owner is so nice and friendly! He even had a note in the window that stated he would help anyone in need of food or drink no charge and no questions asked! God bless this man, his family and his business!! Highly recommend!!!!!
