It’s located in the old Pantry building, which for me is hallowed ground. I spent more than a few nights here as a kid, “camping” with my brother and our friends Keith and Shane. We’d eat Pantry taters, guzzle Mountain Dew, and sneak peeks at the top shelf magazines that definitely weren’t hidden behind the counter back then. If nostalgia had a GPS, it would drop a pin right here.
The food hits that sweet spot between classic and comforting. I’ve had the burgers and the pork tenderloin sandwich. Both hit the mark. Nothing fancy, just exactly what you hope it’ll be when you order it. My son swears by the chicken strips. It’s not a menu that’s trying to reinvent the wheel, but it’s got all the staples. Burgers, tenders, pork sandwiches, even a good old fashioned bologna sandwich if you’re feeling like third grade with a side of beer.
The place has live music, cold drinks, friendly folks, and a laid back vibe. There’s talk of fixing up downtown and bringing in more events, and it feels like Bert’s is helping lead the way.
And if you’re lucky, you might just catch a dog sitting behind the wheel of a parked truck like he’s waiting for someone to bring him a cold one. That actually happened.
Bert’s Rivertown Grill is the kind of spot that makes you glad you came home.
Food is usually great but it’s hit or miss on their pizzas. When they’re good they’re the best pizza around BUT they’re not always good. Tonight we paid over $50 for pizzas that were burnt on top and soggy on the bottom. One time we ordered a pizza with different toppings on each half but it was cut to where all the center pieces had toppings from both sides. Not even sure how that happens. Will probably stick with burgers from now on, haven’t ever had an issue with them.
That being said, the service was wildly slow. Maybe half the tables were full and it was a half an hour before my table for two was served, with very large lapses where the waitress was absent. We went back a few days later and the service was the same.
Overall, this is a standard diner/bar style experience that has better sides and appetizers than you might expect, but with a very significant wait time.
