We have been wanting to go here for a while and finally snagged a reservation for my birthday! It is worth all the hype and accolades. We ordered 6 plates and it was the perfect amount. The mussels are perfection, I could eat those everyday. The cavatelli – superb! Honesty, it was all amazing. The staff is so warm, welcoming and personable too. We can’t wait to go back!

illata is such a beautiful and understated, elegant space with the best food and service in the city (in my opinion). Of the 13 years I’ve lived here, I’ve never felt so taken care of in a restaurant setting, and the food is to die for! I don’t know who would ever give this place less than 5 stars.
We get the marinated mussels every time we go — sometimes two orders of it! The tuna fennel and carrots + crab were very delicious too. I recommend getting the sourdough to clean off the plates 😉
Also, as a parent with little help or time to go out, my husband and I don’t want to go anywhere else on our rare date nights. It’s that good!

Mediocre food in terms of taste. It’s definitely different, but it’s not a place you go to and say I want to come back.
Order:
Bread – average not worth the cost
Chicory salad – first time trying this. It really just tasted like a bitter Caesar salad.
Marinated Mussels – good but not properly washed. Had 2 mussels with that dirt/sand grimy taste.
Crab carrot dish – this was actually pretty good. I do recommend getting this.
Cavatelli pasta dish – very sour. Do not recommend
Chocolate peanut cake – best item on the menu. Very good – would consider ordering this for takeout

A small treasure in Grays Ferry! I’ve been wanting to visit Illata for quite a while and tonight was the night. Every experience exceeded our expectations. With a reservation we only waited for the doors to open right on time! We were warmly greeted, comfortably seated and offered water and wine glasses immediately. The menu was described by our server Maggie as 3 out of 4 of us were first time diners. She offered to help us choose dishes and was careful to check on allergies. Honesty we tasted every last thing on the menu for tonight and some desserts not on the menu. We all agreed that each new dish became “my new favorite dish!” The simple descriptions come
Nowhere near the complex flavors experienced as we shared each plate. Standouts for me were the carrot crab brown butter dish, squid and mushroom rice (I was not sure about trying this one and I’m so glad I did) and the cavetelli and Marcella bean with lemon was just so fresh and bright. We tried 4 desserts and I can’t begin to pick a favorite but the date cake was a real surprise for me. Since the dishes change I’m sure we will need to come back.

I moved to the neighborhood from Brooklyn recently. One day while walking around, I passed this unassuming place. The only indication that it was open was a chair outside with a bouquet of flowers to pin down a paper menu to the chair. The menu looked divine.
A few days later I walked past, showing my partner that the place almost seemed closed from the outside but was very cute inside. Someone who worked there came out as we were looking and was very kind, asking us if we had reservations yet. We said no but booked immediately.
The first time I visited, I had the sourdough, Marinated Mussels (hakurei turnips, miso, chili oil), Carrot (crab, brown butter), Shrimp (peaches, coppa, toasted marcona almonds), and Gnudi (corn& basil). It was an entirely no-skips meal. The mussels came cold, out of their shell, and the sauce was incredible. The “carrot” was more like a crab cake with coconut, brown butter, and an unidentifiable but delightful citrus. A perfect balance of rich & light. The gnudi seemed simple, but the lightly spicy sauce really pulled all the ingredients together. Finally, the shrimp with peaches really knocked my socks off. Lots of places will make “seasonal” menus but not put the effort into making sure that produce is top notch. The peaches would’ve been delicious on their own, but with the rest of the dish, they really shined.
The second time I went (just a few weeks later) I got the Chicory Salad (anchovy, buttermilk, comte), the Steelhead Trout (sungold tomato, perilla), and a tuna crudo special. I also re-ordered the bread, the carrot with crab, and the gnudi. Everything was just as good as last time, and the new additions were truly worth trying. Something as simple as a chicory salad can be so hit or miss – but WOW!
For dessert we had the cherry brown butter tart with crème fraiche. No complaints at all here.
Now I’ve rambled on plenty about the delicious food, which I will be back for very soon, but I truly haven’t ever been to a place with better service. The workers are extremely attentive and kind. I felt like I’ve known everyone there for a long time.
Thank you, Illata, for being such a wonderful neighborhood spot.

Illata’s hype is well matched by the experience. I’m thrilled to have gotten a reservation (not so easy to snag) but have been informed that if you’re proactive, you can find a seat at the bar right when they open. Due to the small plates, ordering many and sharing is the best way to enjoy their selection. The “Carrot” is a great example of perfect palate balance in one dish. The savory and salty crab is cut by the sweet and acidic strips of carrot. The “Bread and Butter” were pleasant, though better utilized to mop the sauce of other dishes than on it’s own. The “Marinated Mussels” served as perfect morsels of the salty ocean mixed with the heat of chili, and balanced with the bitter turnip. The “Cavatelli” achieves a satisfying al dente in it’s toothsome bite. The “Chicory Salad” is unarguably the best salad I’ve had to date even though it’s core component is simply lettuce (still blowing my mind). Each dish felt like an unique flavor experience that is well balance and leaves the mouth, the mind, and the stomach (after several dishes) satisfied. The staff is incredibly friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable. The BYO atmosphere is perfectly curated for this intimate meal and is best enjoyed with 1-3 other guests and a nice bottle of white wine.

An amazing Philly dining experience. We ordered everything on the menu and couldn’t a single dish we didn’t like. Everything was creatively planned out and was super fresh.
The steak was phenomenally cooked and the mussels were another one of our favorites. The chocolate cake at the end may have stolen the show; one of the best desserts I’ve ever had.

A fun, small but creative menu with really great food and service. My wife says the cavatelli may be the best she’s ever had. The servings are relatively small, but three courses for two still came out to under $100, making Illata an excellent value. The restaurant uses space very well, but is small, so reservations are a must and it can get noisy.

The hype for Illata was well deserved! The late October evening was perfect for the outdoor table. Very warm greeting set the mood for the entire meal. Service was attentive without being cloying. Recommendations were given when asked without the I love everything stock response. The food was very clean, focused and flavorful. If the menu said mussels, you tasted mussels. The gnudi was like a soft pillow of flavor. Pasta with clams…we took a bite and ordered another one. The cod was cooked perfectly. However, surprising all of us, the dish that made us go wow the most was the chicory salad. Not a dud on the menu.

We celebrated our anniversary weekend at Illata. We felt so welcomed from the time we entered the door. We sat in an intimate area to dine. Starting with the oysters was an excellent choice with their fresh bread. The tortellini was so amazing! The NY strip steak melted in our mouths. We ended with the dessert that left us speechless! I highly recommend this fantastic restaurant!
