My wife and I found this Guatemalan store/bakery/restaurant by pure chance, and boy are we glad we found it.

I am from Guatemala and know what the food should taste like. I’ve tried almost every Guatemalan restaurant in the Chicago area, and this small authentic restaurant by far has the most delicious authentic taste of all the ones that I have tried. Truly outstanding.

I think the secret of their delicious dishes and breads consists in using authentic Guatemalan ingredients in their Guatemalan food, and not using North American ingredients in their food. Also, the attention to detail and pride in preparing their food. We heard and could see how much pride is taken in each dish and bread. What a delicious difference in the taste!

Juan Carlos was friendly, attentive and wanted to provide us with samples of the different dishes, one after another they were all delicious!

Wife loved the chicken soup, I could not get enough of the Ceviche, and for the price, it was delicious. I also ordered a beef and a chicken taco, which were on hand-made tortillas and so good. Every dish that included tortillas came with HANDMADE tortillas!! No corner-cutting, this place is the true Guatemalan REAL DEAL!

I honestly felt like I was back in Guatemala enjoying a true authentic meal with my family. Some dishes could’ve used more salt, but I believe that’s intentional for customers sensitive to it, for them to add it, which I had no problem adding.

But that wasn’t all, then we had Rellenitos for dessert, which were, without exaggerating, the best I’ve had in Chicago. Not dry. Moist plantain, generous amount of refried beans, and a Guatemalan sour cream you have to taste to believe, so good! They also sell it, we took a bag home. Honestly, try it there and take some home, this is how high quality natural sour cream should taste.

We were so full with the generous portions and Juan Carlos’ offering free samples of their bread and dishes, that we closed with Arroz con Leche to go.

Hours later I was surprised that their Arroz con Leche was not overly filled with rice, instead, I was drinking from the cup instead of scooping it with a spoon. But here’s the thing, it was so well prepared and had a thickness to it, that I couldn’t get enough.

Oh, and if you’re looking to get Guatemalan products, they also have a wide variety. Tortrix, Tukol, and so much more!

Honestly, this was the best experience I’ve had with Guatemalan food, that we will be returning regularly. We strongly recommend this place if you’re looking for authentic Guatemalan food and products.

Great service, food and variety of Guatemalan items. Menu dishes are prepared using real Guatemalan ingredients and the taste is truly authentic and wonderful. I enjoy going here with my husband whenever we get a chance. Bakery and store is well stocked and the Guatemalan sour cream, which they sell, is outstanding.

The food is so expensive, I paid over $20 for a plate of bones and sauce, when I told the owner no chicken, he said that was an extra bone the chicken leg should be around, no even a puce of meat just bones then I asked him to take away a plate of bones, he was rude and gets mad. It’s an awful experience, please don’t go or if you go don’t ask for pepian dish. Besides that Prices are so high! I don’t recommend it.

We came in with high expectations based on the reviews. The atol is very good, but the main dishes do not justify the price. The beef soup was especially disappointing: it was first served with almost no meat and too much fat; when we mentioned it, they brought more meat, but it was cold, which raised concerns. The service is friendly, but unfortunately this is not a place I would return to.

Management was so friendly and eager to share their fresh champurradas. Gave us some free samples. I was very excited to see champurradas since the bakeries near my home don’t make them. Highly recommend fresh baked goods and atole de elote is delicious.

This place is amazing! The fries are unlike any other fries you can find, and are extremely tasty. Juan and the rest of the staff are super friendly and welcoming. The homemade drinks are authentic and taste great. You will find food at La Guatemalteca that you cannot find anywhere else, and you will not be disappointed! Would highly recommend to any of my friends and family.

The best tacos, enchiladas, and tamales in the Chicagoland area. You will not be disappointed. Juan knows what he is doing and does it with a smile. The tortillas are home made. The French fries are never frozen (they open at 5AM to peel and cut their fries). Their homemade hot sauces are flavorful and pack a punch. I’m happy I stopped in on a whim as this will become my go-to lunch spot going forward! They also sell some select groceries (ingredients that they use to cook their amazing meals with)

Food is phenomenal! This is by far the most authentic and tasty Guatemalan restaurant we’ve been to. We miss our food in Guatemala and being here really made it feel like home. Customer service is amazing, very nice people. We will definitely be back!!

My life has been forever changed ‍↕️ In all seriousness though, the Tamal De Chipilin was amazing. Got to talk with Juan Carlos (I think he’s owner or co owner?) for a while and they might be opening a shop in Grand Rapids, MI??? It would be over, I would never eating anywhere else. Also, their fries are… There aren’t words. I’m not even a big fries person but these were an entirely different thing. He showed me what they make them with and I got the stuff to try to make whatever poor comparison I can put together myself until they open their spot in Grand Rapids. I think he said they cut the potatoes in house for the fries? Idk. If you’re in the area, definitely come eat here.
