Found this place by accident. The atmosphere is great , absolutely love the decor.
Service was great too! Our server was a gentleman who said he was new-ish to the restaurant but he was phenomenal!
The food was good but I was surprised at the lack of taco options. 🙁 not a single classic on there.
The ceviche looked beautiful but also not quite what I expected.
The corn was DELICIOUS.
I’d go back and get that as my main dish and one to go.
Drinks were tasty and super cute. Loved , loved the paleta idea.

Overall I’d go back!

Incredible interesting and delicious Mexican cuisine. Great ceviche, moles, fish, and cocktails. Loved the dinner and experience. Bonus having a dog friendly patio.

Stopped in here on a whim and wasn’t disappointed. In all honesty I was kinda surprised. Food was well above average. I had the lamb shank which was prepared with a sauce full of flavor and a touch of spice. Tortillas made fresh, table side guacamole are just a few things they offer. I’ll definitely return to try other things. The one thing I would like to comment on is when first going in you actually don’t get the feeling or ambiance of a place that serves food this good. It just looks like a recycled restaurant from a previous tennant. It needs a little better design touch and maybe make the tables slightly more private feeling. I can’t fully put my finger on what it needs, but like I said, I’ll return to try other dishes. Parking could be a challenge depending on time of day.

Great on all fronts – awesome cocktails, delicious food, and fun vibes. Their tequila and mezcal selection is impressive, and the drinks are just as good as they look. The portions are generous, and everything we tried hit the spot, but the highlight was definitely the table-side guacamole – fresh, personalized, flavorful, and fun to experience it being made right in front of you. The atmosphere inside is lively and welcoming, perfect for a night out. We’ll definitely be back!

Both the food and drink menu were great. For food they had a lot of options that were properly spaced out between seafood, beef / lamb, and vegetarian. We tried several dishes from ceviche to mole and beef birria. All were great although we regret not getting more variety as most was made with the same beef. For drinks – besides the standard options they specialized in mezcal and tequila drinks and had 5 Mexican craft beers on tap. The place had some Christmas decorations and plenty of parking out front. We made a reservation but did not seem to need one as the place was half full at the busiest of the time we were there.

Which leads me to my only complaint – the service was just not great. After taking our food order no one stopped by once afterwards to refill water or allow us to order another drink. We had to flag someone down to get the check an hour after the last time a waiter stopped by. For having had several waiters to handle only a few tables, this was super disappointing. We all wanted to order another drink and have our water refilled and some plates taken away and they just never came back. Overall good restaurant and great Oaxacan Mexican food.

A total meh and disappointing experience.

Appreciated the plant-based menu – which is why we came in the first place. Items were high with meager portions. The fried appetizer was greasy and contained a lot of small scraps. The guacamole was good and prepared table side, however the cart from which it was made was awful looking. The portobello quesadillas were TINY and surrounded by a sea of mole sauce. The ration was completely off. No vegan offering for dessert.

Hardly anyone else was in the restaurant making it NOT A FESTIVE choice for the holiday meal we wanted to have.

We will not be returning.

With all the classic + up and coming restaurants in Encinitas to choose from, Cocina de Barrio has quickly become one of our favorites, and for good reason. Every time we visit — now seven times and counting — the food hits the mark. They really never miss. Their Oaxacan-style dishes are packed with rich, layered flavors that feel both authentic and elevated. From tender mole to perfectly cooked tlayudas and infladita de barbacoa to lamb birria — every plate shows real care, balance, and craftsmanship. It’s the kind of food that keeps you thinking about your next visit before you even leave. And, the drinks are pretty awesome too.

The service is just as impressive. Every staff member we’ve encountered has been warm, attentive, and genuinely excited about what they’re serving. They make the experience feel personal without being overbearing, and every detail — from pacing to presentation — is on point. Huge shoutout to the coolest dude who made our tableside guacamole oaxaqueno tonight! I’m bummed I didn’t get his name but he was so kind and sweet to my 8 year-old as he explained how he’s mixing each ingredient, that he truly made her night! We wanted to give him an additional tip after our dinner but I couldn’t find him! Hopefully he’s still there when we return soon! Thank you so much, Cocina de Barrio!

Delicious brunch at Cocina de Barrio! We are big fans of the chain and this was our first time at this location and it did not disappoint. We ordered the Tia Chata drink which has a coconut popsicle that was a lot of fun as well as a blonde ale. For entrees we had the salmon hash and sopes benny. We sat on the dog friendly patio. The service was very friendly and quick, water always getting refilled. The restrooms have changing tables. Recommend, everything on the menu tastes amazing.

Great service, excellent food and happy hour prices (from 3-5 M-F) What else could you want. We were very pleased with the fish tacos and other tacos that we got along with the guacamole mix with chips. Drinks were the best too. All the people in this restaurant were extremely friendly. Comfortable chairs and great atmosphere. We shall return for more!!!

I love to have lunch in this restaurant. The food is so tasty, unusual and definitely South of the Border. I am thinking about my time in Mexico back in 1970. The flavors and spices are so intense. The service is friendly. We like the patio which is dog friendly. The bartender does a great job with the spicy margaritas or the mescal Manhattan. for my husband. The decor is stylish.
