I wish I had taken photos when the food first arrived, but honestly, the empty plates probably say even more than any picture could. From the first bite to the last, everything was absolutely delicious.
The Akamaru Don was packed with flavor and perfectly balanced — fresh, rich, and incredibly satisfying. The Unagi Don was just as impressive, with tender, beautifully grilled eel and just the right amount of sauce over fluffy rice. Every bite was comforting and memorable.
You know a place is good when the dishes come back completely clean. Highly recommend both the Akamaru Don and Unagi Don — and I can’t wait to come back to try more items on the menu! ✨

Friendly, warm and inviting little bistro style place. I came by myself for lunch and had the Spicy Salmon and Avocado Handroll, the Lunch set which was miso soup, seaweed salad and another little salad something gobo as well as the Hot Gyokuro tea. The Miso is excellent, clearly homemade, just the right umami flavor with a perfect salt level. As a tea snob myself the Hot Gyokuro tea was a special treat and the service was warm and notably good. The Handroll was prepared in a way that I wasn’t quite used to, not the typical cone shape with a spicy mayo on a sashimi style pieces of salmon and avocado making it a little difficult to juggle, but the flavors were good and the quality of the fish very fresh. I will visit again with friends next time.

OMG this place is SO GOOD! I’ve already been here twice in just three days, that’s how obsessed I am. The owners are Japanese and really friendly, and the restaurant is small but bright, clean, and very comfy. I love that it’s not dark inside because I like to actually see what I’m eating.

You can make reservations on Google, which is great because it gets busy fast. The space isn’t big, so definitely book ahead if you don’t want to wait.

For food, we tried the Akamaru Don with UNI and the UNI + Ikura Don, and everything was insanely fresh. The toro literally melted in my mouth, and the UNI was sweet, creamy, and perfect. The oysters two ways were so fresh, and the chef’s sauce made them even better.

The Soft Shell Crab Bun comes with a whole crab, not just pieces, so fun and delicious! The Bluefin Toro Hand Roll was packed with flavor, and the Matcha Latte and Hojicha Latte were rich, smooth, and not too sweet.

Every bite reminded us of Japan, authentic flavors, perfectly balanced, and absolutely satisfying. Nothing disappointed. I’m beyond happy they opened in this area, and this place is officially a new favorite. I can already see myself becoming a regular here!

I headed over to Akamaru in Scottsdale today for a Japanese food fix. I showed up starving, and even though the photos don’t quite show it, the portions were way bigger than I expected.

Of course, I still managed to finish all three dishes—it was too good to leave anything behind! Everything tasted amazing, and there are so many other things on the menu I still want to try.

*The only two things I would say is the Gyu Don visually looked dry but let me tell you, it was juicy & delicious. I was also expecting the Chashu Don to be a bit more braised than what I got, but again it was still super good.

What a wonderful little restaurant! I’ve been multiple times and only took pictures of the really cool beer and the (bizarrely good?) fried chicken, but I’ve tried most of the menu.

There’s sushi here. It’s wonderful, fresh, well-presented. Absolutely nothing wrong with getting sushi, especially their sushi bowl with rice which is out of this world. But I’ve worked through the other traditional Japanese food on their menu and it’s been really fantastic – the fried chicken alone was worth the trip.

Anyways, this has quickly become one of our favorite finds in the Valley from the last year and we’ve been telling everyone we know. It’s a real gem.

Came for lunch on a Saturday and was sat at the bar right away. Their service is quick, efficient, and friendly. This place is very clean. Food came out quickly and was very high quality. I got a hojicha latte, Akamaru don, and a chicken karaage onigirazu (to go). The hojicha latte was very good – you could taste the tea and they perfectly balanced the sugar. The Akamaru don was perfect and well balanced with quality fish and great rice. The chicken karaage was also a great snack for later. Highly recommend this place!!!

Wow. This is high quality authentic Japanese fare. The fish were as fresh and delicious as in Tsukiji Fish Market. The izakaya style menu may not be for everyone but for the rest who admire Japanese food this little place is a gem. Give it a shot and see if you like it. Husband / Wife team run this place with lot of passion – and it shows.

owners brought japan to scottsdale! all fish are imported from there and everything used is good quality. tiny, quiet, but clean and refreshing atmosphere. Spent about $50 a person, including drinks. Will be back. Matcha/Sencha tea is a great option for a warm beverage to sip on.

This wonderful, overflowing bowl of sushi over (very well prepared) rice was a highlight, but the menu is full of fun surprises that are worth exploring at this bright, clean, delightful little restaurant. The owners are just lovely and clearly curated a special menu of interesting, delicious food.

For what it’s worth, we love gyu-don and they make the best in the valley. We loved their cucumber salad, their interesting beers, and all the love they pour into everything they make.

I ordered the Uni & Ikura Don, and it was fantastic. The sweet, plentiful salmon roe paired perfectly with the fresh sea urchin—such a treat! My husband had the Yakiniku Onigirazu, a soy–sesame marinated beef and lettuce rice sandwich. It was huge, and he said it tasted great. We’ll definitely be back!
