Stunning throwback to a kinder, gentler era of slower food and drink, and nicer people, Le Bateau Ivre, has a purity of intention, that dates back to the culinary revolution of the 60’s and 70’s, and holds forth with a simple, almost rustic menu, especially in the breakfast department, where they really shine.
Their recipe for Hollandaise sauce is the stuff of local legend, still executed with tasteful mastery, and the way they put it all together in their eggs Benedict with home fries, and a small mixed fruit side, is exactly what the weary soul, lost in a sea of foodie choices, desperately needs.
This is real french home food. And I am in love with the place, and the people.
BONUS:
The decor and surroundings are to die for, and LBI is THE place for an intimate date.
And if all of that wasn’t enough, they are incredibly economical. (So please leave them a nice tip, and help keep this historic place open!)

Treat yourself!

If you are in Berkeley Le Bateau Ivre should be in your dining plans. This is a perfect example of fine unpretentious elegant dining in the French fashion. The menu is simple and the meals are perfect. The restaurant is a late 1800s converted house with multiple cozy dining rooms with typical round table-clothed tables surrounded by an eclectic mix of period chairs. Outdoors is perfect patio dining with wrought iron tables with umbrellas.

The service was excellent and the prices are very modest.

I have traveled all over the world. Eaten in fine restaurants but I have to say this was one of the most enjoyable dining experiences I have had.

By the way I had lunch on the patio and dinner in the window seat inside. Just perfect!

This was my favorite cafe when I lived in Berkeley. They have great coffee and wonderful atmosphere. From cozy, dimly lit areas in the back to their sunny patio. It all has a classical elegance as well.
I never had dinner there, but the breakfast was always good. They also have a nicely stocked bar and will Irish, Mexican, or French up your coffee.

Came here for lunch because the place looks super cute. We ordered the French onion soup, salmon cakes and bolognese (which was very recommended). The French onion soup was pretty standard and my friend has enjoyed. The salmon cakes and bolognese were unremarkable. I would not come again for the food, but the vibe is very cute and they have a lovely outdoor area.

Peaceful atmosphere that brings you to a peaceful and delicious culinary journal. The staff was very friendly, we had our dog with us in the patio and the owner came by to sya hello and being water and treats to our dog. The waiter was so nice and friendly. The food was just amazing from beginning to end. We shared a Greek salad, my husband had the salmon and I had the prawns. The chef did an amazing job with the food, you can tell that they used quality and fresh ingredients. We ended up getting desser at the end creme brulee and chocolate mousse with a cup of french coffee. The music brings you back to a French restaurant. We will be back !!!Love everything about it
