Below are my explanations. I visited this place to try their hot dog and Italian beef sandwich. The hot dog was decent, but the Italian beef sandwich was a Subway-style sandwich with some meat inside. We also ordered the hamburger, which tasted like charcoal lighter and was horrible. The atmosphere was nice, and the service was okay.

A Chicago dog needs no introduction.
We headed to Portillo’s on West Ontario Street knowing this was a rite of passage. Having eaten plenty of authentic hot dogs in New York City, I’ll admit I was slightly sceptical. The Chicago version looked… busy. A lot of toppings. A lot happening. I wondered if it might be style over substance.
I was completely wrong.
Hands down, the best hot dog I’ve ever had. Ever.
Every single component worked. The snap of the sausage, the softness of the bun, the sharpness of the mustard, the crunch from the pickle and onions, the freshness from the tomato, the gentle heat of the sport peppers, it all balanced perfectly. Nothing overwhelmed. Nothing felt unnecessary. It was engineered brilliantly.
It’s easy to look at a Chicago dog and think it’s too much. It isn’t. It’s precise.
And the crinkle-cut fries? Fresh out of the fryer, properly hot, seasoned perfectly. Crisp outside, fluffy inside, exactly what you want alongside something that good.
Another classic Chicago institution absolutely delivering.
At this point, the city isn’t just meeting expectations, it’s knocking them out of the park.
Another home run

Loved this place. The staff, the ambiance, the vibe, and oh the food. Best Chicago hot dog we had during our trip. Even the fries were great. Definitely worth a visit. Much better prices than some of the other hot dog joints we went to and the food was even better here.

I recently had a visit and would easily give it 5 out of 5. I went with a Chicago-style hot dog, an Italian beef sandwich, and a classic chocolate cake shake, and everything tasted exactly how I hoped it would. The hot dog was loaded with all the traditional toppings and had a great snap and flavor that felt very authentic. The Italian beef sandwich had thin, juicy slices of beef piled high on fresh bread and soaked in jus that made every bite rich and satisfying. The chocolate cake shake was thick, creamy, and sweet in the best way, which was the perfect finish to the meal. The restaurant itself has a fun, old-school vibe with its 1930s-style decor, and even though it can get busy, the ordering was smooth and the staff kept things moving quickly. I also noticed a wide range on the menu with char-broiled burgers, salads, ribs and more if you want variety next time. Overall I walked away really happy with both the food and the experience, and it’s one of the best spots in Chicago for classic local eats.

Best Hotdog I had! I never had a Chicago hotdog before and I am so glad I tried it here. The pickles and toppings helped to bring all the flavors together. I liked the original hotdog than the garden hotdog. The texture in garden hotdog was more soft and I liked ghe original more because it was chewy. The employees were nice and we had our food quick!

This place was worth the visit D Double Lish. Ordered from the kiosk got our condiments while we waited and sat in the enclosed outdoor patio area. The inside was very cool with lots of history and things to look at. Everyone there was doing something everyone was busy no slackers here that I saw, all smiles too.
So for the real reason we’re here the food was on point for my tastebuds wife loved hers as well. I had the Italian beef with gravy on the side with fries wife had the Maxwell with fries and root beer she said root beer was really good.(picture provided for more details on order)
There are probably way better places I’m no expert but this was a hit for us. Definitely will make this a must stop on our food list next time we’re in the city with strong shoulders.

Absolutely blown away by Portillo’s and Barnelli’s. The atmosphere is vibrant and cool, like stepping into a classic Chicago spot, but with a modern, welcoming vibe. We tried the hot dog and an Italian beef sandwich, and both were perfection – the dog was snapped perfectly with fresh toppings, and the beef was tender, juicy, and packed with flavor, especially with the sweet peppers and a side of gravy,”. “Seriously, run, don’t walk – the food is incredible, service is friendly, and it’s a must-visit for delicious hot dogs and Italian sandwiches that hit all the right notes!”. We are sooooooo happy to discover them.

Not the most appetizing photo, but the classic hot dog with all the toppings + a side of onion rings was a great meal. Hot dog wasn’t necessarily something to write home about, but had a nice snap and interesting mix of flavors. Onion rings were super crunchy and good with the comeback sauce. Reasonably priced for a touristy spot and very fast service. Ordered at the kiosk.

I couldn’t choose between a hot dog and the beef sandwich so when I saw they had an option that combined them I had to get it. The beef and peppers had great flavor and the sausage had a great snap factor. The bread was soft yet crunchy and the gravy they dip it in is delicious. The onion rings were crispy huge and flavorful. My wife had the pasta from barnellis and it was a very good. The only reason I go from 5 stars to 4 stars is having to go to both places for pickup after making the order on the kiosk.
