My friend and I were debating where to eat and what we wanted. I have dietary restrictions now that mean I’m looking for less complex foods. She suggested Mediterranean and found Orla.
We started with the baba ganoush and avocado and beet salad which complemented one another. The Baba Ganoush had a rich smoky taste. The Avocado Beet salad was tasty with a light, zingy dressing.
My friend had the sea bass and I had the king salmon. Both were excellent. The King Salmon had a yummy crust and was perfectly cooked and tender inside.
The side dishes were fab. We had the cauliflower with a light citrusy dressing and Brussels Sprouts with pomegranate seeds. I could have licked the plates clean!
We arrived about 45 minutes early for our 7:00 PM reservation and were seated right away. Jerry, our server, was great—he did a nice job explaining the Greek and Egyptian influences, which was a cool touch since I’d never tried Egyptian flavors before.
The meal started strong. The Baba Ganoush had a perfect smokiness and the pita was warm and fluffy. My wife loved the Avocado Fattoush (even for someone like me who isn’t a beet fan, it was fantastic), and the Grilled Octopus was a highlight with a great char and starchiness from the fava beans.
However, things got a bit messy once we hit the entrees:
Availability: They were already out of the short rib for the evening 6:30pm
The Fish: We ordered the Mediterranean Seabass, but when it arrived, it didn’t look or taste like seabass. It was still delicious, so we didn’t make a fuss, but it was notable. It was Sea Bream
The Steak Fiasco: I ordered the Filet (medium-rare). When it arrived, the top was rare, but the bottom was well-done, like it had been left on one side of the grill way too long. I sent it back, and it took about 15 minutes for a replacement.
The Wrong Cut: The replacement was clearly a NY Strip, not a Filet. I was tired of waiting so I just ate it, but when I mentioned the mix-up to Jerry, he told me he “wouldn’t charge me the $2 price difference.” Given that the first steak was cooked incorrectly and the second one was the wrong cut entirely, that felt like a pretty tone-deaf response for a restaurant at this price point. The menu lists “cabbage rolls” (plural), but only one arrived.
We’re in Vegas 6–8 times a year and we really want to love this place because the food has so much potential, but for Mandalay Bay prices, the kitchen and service oversight need to be tighter. We’ll probably give it one more shot next time we’re in town, but hopefully, the experience is a bit more polished. Total bill for 2 was approx $400 (tip included)
Jason and the rest of the staff were incredibly attentive, making sure every detail of our meal was perfect without being overbearing. The service was top-notch, and the entire experience was unforgettable. Highly recommend Orla for anyone looking for a special dining experience in Vegas!
