I would say plan ahead because it is small and cozy other than that everything is great, stopped in with my girlfriends for brunch and everything was delish!
Definitely get the empanadas fresh & light!
Everything was so enjoyable.
UPDATE: I went back to try the food and ordered shrimp tacos. Superb…very high quality. Though billed as small plates, the 3 taco serving was substantial enough to provide dinner.
UPDATE #2: vegetarian tacos were light and flavorful. So good.
I arrived just past breakfast hours, a small heartbreak 🙁 but that disappointment faded quickly when I met Sarah. Now, some people simply do their jobs. But Sarah!!! Embodies hospitality. A smile that that radiates kindness, and a warmth that lingered long after she spoke. She didn’t just list the menu; she narrated it, each dish told with sincerity. We need more people like Sarah in this world; that kind of hospitality is rare nowadays, people who remind you that kindness still exists, even in the rush of daily service.
On her suggestion, I went with the Garnachas and what a revelation they were. Savory sirloin layered over crisp tortillas , crowned with a crunchy cabbage slaw and kissed by the housemade tomato sauce brightened with Guatemalan spices. Earthy, tangy, and deeply satisfying.
I followed that with a slice of Pumpkin Loaf, the kind that hums of autumn in every crumb. Moist, fragrant, rich with cinnamon and nutmeg! The pumpkin didn’t just whisper; it spoke to me warm and steady.
Now lets have a conversation. The Mayan Chocolate. WOOOOOO baby a velvety sip of heritage, rich and frothy with just enough spice to awaken the senses. But hold on, the one that had me in a scissors chokehold, was the Pumpkin Dirty Horchata!!! Two shots of espresso (S/O to Sarah) swirled into creamy horchata laced with pumpkin pie spices. It was indulgent yet not overly sweet which some café have some trouble balancing, but this felt almost childlike euphoria.
There’s a kind of rare satisfaction that comes from such moments when good food, warm service, and atmosphere converge into something quietly profound. I left LaPluma feeling lighter, elated, and deeply grateful. In a world where genuine care often feels endangered, Sarah is the embodiment of that, a true representation of what hospitality should be. I’ll definitely be back… just gotta make sure I set my alarm next time for breakfast next time.
I have been a repeat customer since the week they opened. Their friendly service, delicious drinks, and high-quality food keep me coming back.
They have an all-day table-service serving model, but also welcome teleworking customers.
I often come to telework during the day and order an iced dirty horchata, my favorite. For food items, I rotate between the cheese and spinach pupusas, churros, and shrimp tacos. The portions are large and each bite is delicious.
Note that it can get busy on evenings and weekends so make sure to come early!
This is my 10th visit this cafe in the past month. Is it worth it? Absolutely!
FOOD: I have tried over half of the menu, and it’s safe to say that everything tastes so good. You should expect portions to be smaller since the cafe restaurant is small. Always ask for the Horchata or the Chia Lemonade. My personal favorite are Pupusas (poo-poo-Sah) with cheese or revueltas (ray-well-tas). The menu can seem pricey for some, but the taste of the food is just about accurate to the price.
Service: The servers and baristas have always been kind, helpful, and friendly. They give great recommendations, and they do check in on you during the meal to see how the food is. There’s usually only 1 server (maybe 2 on weekends) that will be working, so if you’re on a time crunch save yourself the trouble and let them know for accurate wait times. I wouldn’t suggest a group more than 8.
ATMOSPHERE: The cafe restaurant is small yet beautiful. While the warm weather allows for more space with outdoor heated seating, the restaurant has a beautiful view of Alexandria on Cameron Street. Date night, early brunch with friends, or just late evening working? This is the spot.
Overall this is one of my gatekept secrets and I felt I wanted to enjoy a little longer before everyone storms the place. You will enjoy it. 10/10 ✨
Gluten free protein waffle was a healthy option for breakfast, a bit too salty to my liking but nevertheless, I was happy to see a savory GF food on the menu. Service is super friendly and attentive, I hope they keep it up since lots and lots similar establishments these days seem to have a decline in customer service.
