Very little English is spoken, but with Google Translate and very patient staff, it all worked out easily!
Quaint interior, family owned and run (from what I could tell), VERY reasonable prices especially considering the quality of meal served (back home it would have been at least twice as expensive).
Come when it opens or reserve in good time, otherwise it will be full. I arrived just as it opened, by the time my food was served it was almost full. They do take some time to prepare the meal, but the wait is most definitely worth it, as everything is cooked to perfection.
If you are having steak in Wien / Vienna, you are doing yourself a disservice by not coming here.
They cut the steaks fresh to your order!
Got a 750g Ribeye – seasoned and cooked perfectly! (Med Rare)
The Baked Potato, with sour cream and chives, was fantastic!
The corn on the cob was phenomenal!
The entire Staff (Owners) were very accommodating to me! They were absolutely wonderful!
If you have a group of 4 or less, getting a table may not be hard. If you have a larger party, you’ll need reservations.
I tried their beef tenderloin and it was delicious! The owners are very kind too!
I just suggest you to make a reservation in advance because they focus on quality and do not have many tables!
If I will come back in Vienna, Jolly Ox will be a “must place to visit again”!!
Through our own ignorance, it was a little tricky ordering to begin with as the staff didn’t speak and English and our German is very limited! The lady did get the chef to speak to us though and he was very helpful.
You’ll receive a salad to eat as you please as well as an appetiser of what I would describe as close to paté but slightly different. It’s very nice with the fresh bread.
Now be warned – between arriving and eating your main you’ll be waiting at least 90 minutes. DO NOT go absolutely starving because the smell of the steaks cooking will make it worse!
The steaks – WOW. Between us we had a maxi-size (360g/13oz) striploin (sirloin) cooked medium and a maxi-size ribeye cooked mid-rare. Both were cooked and seasoned to perfection. The flavour was incredible. The garlic butter you get a ton of to add yourself was incredible. The sides were perfect in size and taste.
The atmosphere was brilliant too. You get to watch chef cook in an open kitchen and see how everything is prepared. The decor is delightful. The service is extremely friendly. It’s all very reasonable priced either, our entire meal was 86 euros.
I always had Hawksmoor down as the best steak I’ve eaten and never thought it would be topped. Sorry guys, but the Jolly Ox takes it and by a considerable margin.
Do yourself a favour and make this a MUST on any visit to Vienna!
But be warned: you have to book well in advance and really take your time. Better be prepared to spend the whole evening. Slow Food at its best and nothing for Vegetarians.
