Service was warm and attentive throughout the evening.
The space has a welcoming, old-world feel that adds to the dining experience and gives the restaurant a distinct sense of character.
The food was top notch. As the pictures show, we tried quite a few dishes between Shrimp and Grits, Fish (several options on this category), Crab Cakes, and what I’ll call Lambsicles, and all were delicious. Additionally, the cocktails are wonderful and the wine list is littered with wine from high quality wine regions. One thing to note, is the chef specials are quite extensive, so what you see online is only about 60-70% of the menu, so be prepared to adjust if you go in with a plan.
The service and atmosphere is great. The rooms are broken into small sections, which keeps the atmosphere pleasant and at an appropriate noise level. The wait staff was also great, in which they were attentive, and ensured all of us were served at the same time.
Lastly, and just to be fair, the prices are high. Again, you pay for what you get, so if you pay top of the market prices, as long as you get top of the market quality, then I’m good, which this is a classic example of that. I highly enjoyed my experience and would recommend this as a special occasion place to eat.
Early 6pm reservation. The bar takes forever and it took 30 minutes just to convey they did not have Buffalo Trace and another 10ish min just to get the revised drink. After ordering, the waiter came back only have only to say they did not have the meatloaf (chef forgot to put in oven) or scallops (didn’t make it on the truck so that caused a reorder. Things happen but waiter should have known ahead of time. I had the ribeye, the cook was great but definitely under salted, it was just warm and no good real sear. The appetizers were great, including the Brie app and the Garlic dish. Dessert was just ok. Strawberry shortcake biscuit is a great idea but the biscuit was dry, cheesecake itself was good but leave it simple and not plaster with peach compoteish, and the pumpkin creme brulee was mixed results, I loved it but others said it was ok. The net, such a beautiful location, maybe it was an off night, and we hope they get it right.
I had the bison meatloaf and it is without a doubt the best meatloaf I have had. Portions are also plentiful, I had more than enough for leftovers. The St Louis style ribs were fantastic, the sauce was the perfect combination of sweet and tangy. The jumbo shrimp cocktail is totally worth it as well, it features a house made tequila cocktail sauce that is second to none. Also tried the charcuterie as well. The meat and cheese selections were excellent and are also rotating so you can get something new going throughout the year.
The wait staff is great, Noah knew everything about all of their dishes and had excellent wine and cocktail pairing recommendations.
I would not hesitate to visit again for a date night, celebration, hosting an event, really just any occasion to go to a nice restaurant is a reason to visit Hunter House & Gardens.
