Manning’s Ice Cream Shop was a perfect stop after dinner at Sushi Thai with my husband and in-laws. We absolutely loved the ice cream selection! There were so many great flavors to choose from, and everything we tried was delicious.

We already can’t wait to come back when it’s actually warm outside and enjoy it even more. Such a great spot for dessert with family!

This is always a must stop when in pa. There are many locations, each is good. Our favorite ice cream is the Carmel critters. We also liked the barnyard gravy, banana, and caramel sea salt.

I make a point of stopping at Manning every time I’m in Scranton. The homemade ice cream has been consistently fresh and free of ice crystals and grit. Every flavor I’ve tried is excellent, and there is always a large variety including many creative ingredient combinations. The staff are friendly and accommodating, always willing to let someone try a sample (this is a double edged sword when the line is long).

There is one huge drawback: they only accept cash, which to me is just ridiculous. Am I really expected to keep a wad of cash in my pocket for the 5% of businesses that don’t accept cards? Last I checked, the ATM next door applies a $2.00 surcharge . Another drawback is very long lines in the summer – but if you still eat ice cream in the winter like me, you’re in and out.

Negatives aside, the ice cream is consistently excellent and that’s what’s really important.

Let me start off by saying Manning’s has BY FAR some of THE BEST ice cream I have ever had. If you’re considering just stopping by, you won’t be disappointed. Especially if you like tasting REAL dairy in your ice cream. That bright, sweet, CREAMY, straight-from-the-farm dairy flavor is quite honestly as close to perfection as you can get.

Unfortunately their business-/customer- facing side of things is absolutely AWFUL. The juxtaposition is truly breathtaking, it is almost as bad as their ice cream is good I tried ordering my wife a custom birthday cake, and was told that for a custom cake I need to order AT LEAST TWO WEEKS IN ADVANCE. Fair enough, a week in advance isn’t enough time to put together an ice cream cake so I took one of the pre-stocked “boring” balloon ones. Her name is Veronika. I spelt it multiple times over the phone, and they spelt it back to confirm. When we opened the cake at home the day of her birthday, we saw “Happy Birthday Zeronika” Fair enough, we had a laugh about it, at some point in the communication chain something must’ve gone wrong, but the cake was there and it tasted amazing.

Which brings us to today. Valentine’s day. This time I knew ALL the roadblocks I thought. I came into the store IN PERSON this time on JANUARY 30th. January 30th think about that for a minute, nearly HALF A MONTH before this holiday. I spent a great deal of time talking with the TWO young women working there on that day. We went into ALL the details of the cake. What color, what flavors what decoration: I mean when I tell you I was excited, I mean it. The message on the cake? “Happy Valentine’s Day, Zeronika!” Yes that’s right we EMBRACED the mistake they made last time. I was re-asked by BOTH the girls of the spelling. Yes that’s what I wanted, a very memorable cake which we spent a great amount of time designing. One might say quite an unforgettable one. I was told I would get a call on the week of to come pick it up. GREAT I thought, I finally figured out how to hack their cake-making process and we’d be able to enjoy the cake of our dreams together.

Fast-forward to the week of, no calls, no correspondence. Ok I thought, well there’s still time until the 14th. And finally the 14th arrives. Ok, strange, so I call them directly. Ask about the status of my cake, give them THE EXACT TIME I ORDERED IT. The designs, the message everything. You must know this uniquely placed order. Nope nothing. I was told that they’d reach out to management and get back to me. I think you already know where this is going, but at this point I was getting really nervous. Maybe the cake is still at the farm, I thought. Maybe it was just a joke. An hour or so later I get a call. Management had gotten back to them. No sign of the cake, the order never existed. And the consolation? Get ready for this, cause it really put the icing on our nonexistent cake. FIVE DOLLARS OFF MY NEXT CUSTOM CAKE ORDER. Just think about that, really give it some thought. Let it sink in like I did I didn’t even complain, and I LOVE complaining. The absurdity of what she said caught me so off-guard that I was left speechless. “Thanks,” I said. Can you believe it? My next meticulously-designed, half a month’s time notice, memorably nonexistent cake would be FIVE DOLLARS OFF! That’s fantastic, I can’t wait!

TLDR: Great ice cream, but if you make them responsible for an important event YOU WILL REGRET IT. It’s like asking your 9-year-old to make something for a special event 2 weeks in advance. Anything is possible, but the most likely outcome is no cake, a crudely-written, misspelled apology, and 5$ off your next back rub

We were in the area visiting Lackawanna State Park. On a super hot day of hiking we decided to google ice cream in the area which brought us to Mannings. I got the Raspberry chocolate truffle – the absolute best ice cream I have ever eaten. Loved seeing the pictures and reading the story of the history and the process of the this family run business. We drive RT 81 a few times a year and we will be getting off the exit to have a break and get a cone.

Manning’s ice cream is the best in the area! I love it. It is a cash only business but I know that before I visit. The staff is all very friendly and they let you try out flavors before you pick them. They also have tubs of ice cream you can purchase to take home with you. I love having a sweet treat on a warm day.
