Dedicated fryer for gluten free and plenty of gluten free options. I would recommend them to anyone looking for gluten free food.
I would start by saying that the space itself wasn’t what I expected. For some reason, I was thinking more restaurant, and this was more of the dive bar vibe. There’s nothing wrong with that, it just surprised me.
Our waitress that day was lovely. She was running front of house by herself, from hostess to bartender to waitress. She did a great job moving between tasks and circulating to customers.
The food was a mixed bag. We started with an order of cheese fries. The fries themselves were delicious – thin and crisp. Our only wish was for more cheese as only half or so of them had any topping. Both of us opted for a side Caesar salad with our meals. The portion was definitely decent, and overall, it was very good. We both also loved the Gouda burger we split. This is not an option you see in many places, and the combo of flavors was delicious.
However, the sad part of our meal was the Captains basket. There were no clam strips, so hubby switched to the calamari, and we agreed I would eat the shrimp as I don’t enjoy calamari. He ate some of the calamari when the basket arrived but didn’t love them. The shrimp – which we didn’t realize until after ordering was going to be buffalo style – were too spicy to eat. We both tried them, and it was like they had been soaked in straight hot sauce. There was no need to complain as this is just how they are served. The fish was good, but overall, it was not an entree worth the $30 cost.
If you are in the area and looking for a good burger and fries, I can recommend stopping by. However, it is not a place I would purposely go out of my way to return to with so many options in the area.
Pickup was also quite simple, though it was a little weird. I was expecting more of a general restaurant, but instead was greeted by something more akin to a house that has had a living room converted into a bar. It almost felt like walking into Moe’s from The Simpsons.
When I got home and opened everything up I was a bit mixed on how much food I got for the price I paid, I knew the bag felt a bit on the lightweight side but I’ve been surprised before. This was not the case here. Still I pushed aside my concerns and dug into the meal.
The fried calamari was perfect and so was the fried mozzarella, but the fried pickles were pretty floppy and not crunchy as expected. They had a nice spicy flavor, but the texture really undercut it. The BBQ cheddar melt was very tasty, but the chicken was in this weird chunks form and spilled out from the sandwich if I wasn’t careful. I’d recommend they switch up to chicken breasts. And the salad, well, it was there. Shredded Iceberg is totally flavorless, but luckily I predicted this and went with creamy Italian dressing so I could at least enjoy it still.
All that said, for $52.73, this was totally overpriced for one person and takeout to boot. I’d say this was far more of a $30 to $40 meal at max, nothing about it blew me away and I was disappointed in the proportions. Overall, 4/5 stars, but I’d say closer to a 3.5 out of 5.
The waitress was amazing and doing the best she should could with being the only person doing the whole front, back, and bar area
After ordering and waiting for almost an hr we were told the restaurant was out of bacon which almost half the menu has bacon on the food so not a good thing to run out of. So more than half our party had to pick something else, and half of what we wanted had marinara sauce on it which was also out. When our food finally came out the burgers were super wet and pink when we said no pink, and the fries were cold.
On a positive note, the fish fry and fish tacos that a couple people ordered from our group they all said were amazing.
The owner helped us out with our indecisiveness – as the menu is impressive and big. Once the food arrived it tasted amazing, we wanted to eat some home-fare and it didn’t disappoint.
Highly recommend it to travellers driving through Malta. Staff & owners are very nice, food was warm and the drinks were cold, ah, and the place itself has a great atmosphere too!
