Santa Fe Bees is a busy, neighborhood, counter service restaurant near downtown Santa Fe. The place was really, pardon the pun, buzzing. We took a menu out to a table on the enclosed porch, quiet (68 dB) and insulated from the traffic noise. In spite of the rush, our orders were quickly taken and we had our Mexican Coke, Chocolate Shake and a complimentary basket of chips and salsa immediately. We special ordered a Fish Taco Plate to share with four (not three) tacos, mahi mahi, mango salsa, black beans, coleslaw, tomatoes and avocado with a zesty, house recipe tartar sauce. Each taco came with two corn tortillas. It was easy to make 8 tacos out of the 4 on the plate. The Taco Salad (also shared) came in something we had never seen before, deep fried cheese shaped into a bowl. The Taco Salad was a lettuce base with pico de gallo, sour cream, cucumber, tomatoes, avocados, and jack and cheddar cheese strips with housemade dressing, in the heaping cheese bowl. The plates were delivered to the table by friendly staff who stopped to chat even in the noon rush. Good local lunch place
Details: the food is unique, flavorful, and the portions are abundant. I grew up in SATX, so southwestern style cuisine has always been close to my heart and in SF I’ve benefited immensely everywhere we went but HERE took me to the next level. I’m normally a tacos girl but I had to try the blue corn flautas and they were everything and more! Side options were rice, beans, or calabacitas (squash) and I got rice and calabacitas – serving of vegetables and rice perfect for the leftover Christmas style sauce and cheese. Everything was cooked exactly right.
But on top of this?? The salsa negra for the chips was something I had never had before, too delicious to leave behind. We asked for a jar to take home and worried it wouldn’t come in something sturdy enough for the long train ride home. But when the owner came out with a Mason style jar with the metal screw on lid, I knew we were getting more out of this visit than most. Amazing service, amazing people, amazing FOOD! Want fantastic New Mexican/El Salvadoran food? Go to Santa Fe Bees. You do not want to miss this and you’ll be treated like community.
In general, this place is walkable, accessible by car, with parking, pickup and eat in, bathrooms, and hi and low tech ordering (a kiosk or a human). Affordable and delicious.
