Amazing southern style cooking skillfully prepared with a lot of care and attention. You can tell that the owner must have a lot of pride in their restaurant.
The fried catfish was perfectly cooked and the batter was extremely light and delicate. Not at all greasy or heavy. The collard greens were exceptional, you should definitely give them a try even if you think you don’t like greens.

Cajun Country Cafe popped up first when we checked Google maps for a place to eat while visiting Oxnard’s Christmas Tree lane. It had been a while since we had some soul food, so we were up for it. I have 2.5 teenage boys (one is 11), so we got the fried fish sampler and the barbecue sampler. The food was so flavorful — my kids declared the mac & cheese the best they’d ever had, while I was swooning over the candied yams, and we all thought the fried red snapper and catfish were so delicious with a breading that was not too thick and perfectly crispy. I did not even get to try the hot links, which my kids and husband gobbled up.
In spite of how great the food was, it was the vibe that really stood out to me. Cajun Country Cafe is in a nondescript strip mall, but we happened to stop in on Saturday night. While we waited for our order, a dude who we thought was just there by himself having coffee got on the keyboard and was shortly joined by a drummer and guitarist. The live music was such a fun surprise, and a new experience for my entire family. (I tried to upload videos to this review, but Google is not cooperating.)
We are definitely coming back!

It smelled so good from the moment you walk in because of the food. They are very welcoming and kind if you are a first timer or not sure what to order. The food speaks for itself, jam packed with flavor and depth. A go to for fried chicken, catfish, and the mac and cheese.

My honest review as a foodie. So I ordered the combination catfish and red snapper with redbeans and rice side and dirty rice side. The redbeans had too much pepper in them for my taste, dirty rice was good. The fish was fresh and fried perfectly but my standards I think they need more spices in the flour. The shrimp were over cooked. They were rubbery. The hush puppies were decent my taste would like a little more spice also. As for the price for it all. It was around 34 bucks with a drink. A little bit bigger portions on the sides and It would be perfect. Service was awesome, didnt eat inside but the place did have a distinct smell. Not what I was expecting with a Cajun place.

I’d give this 0 stars but 1 will do I guess. The first time coming here, the food was SO SALTY. The brown gravy tasted like thickened salt. . So bad. The shrimp and grits were mid.
It was my second time going, and I ordered the beignets. They were not beignets. It seemed like there was maybe no yeast in them. We returned them. And the owner refused to give us our money back. Very unprofessional. i’ve never seen beignets made this way in my entire life. And for almost $30!!! No thanks.

My first time here, and what an experience! Not only is the food soooo good, the service and family atmosphere was awesome that I almost felt like I was invited to dinner at their home. I’ve never been to Louisiana, but I feel like I have now!

Excellent food. Owner was very nice and patient with me when I could not decide what to order. I got the cajun rub wings and they were really good. Fries tasted delicious. Thank you for the meal!

I guess my review struck a nerve with the owner of this restaurant. First, I would like to apologize if this is good “Soul Food” Cajun…i didn’t even know there was such a thing! 2nd, there was no need to ask me not to return to your restaurant. Do you really think I would come back?
Original Review:
Pretty disappointing. Being from the south with my mother’s side of the family entirely from the Baton Rouge, Louisiana area, I’ve eaten my share of Cajun food and especially Cajun Gumbo. Never have I been served gumbo the consistency of beef broth. This was the most disgusting gumbo I have ever seen or tasted. I could go on in detail but just trust me, you don’t want this if you’ve ever had “real” gumbo! The rice and beans had hardly any rice in it and no flavor other than the cayenne that was dominant in every dish I tried except for the Collard greens…they were good and my friend said her mac and cheese was good as well. Her red snapper was okay. Unfortunately I ordered the catfish and the filets were so thin that the breading took over and most bites were crunchy. On top of all this we got to eat on plastic trays with plastic utensils and plastic cups…for $80 ( incl. tip) but w/only water to drink! Never again…

Ate here for the first time today and had a great experience. We ordered fried chicken despite a gluten sensitivity because they said they could use a cornmeal batter. We also ordered ribs and our sides were jambalaya, collard greens and macaroni and cheese. All the dishes were good but the ribs were amazing. The only disappointments was the size of the peach cobbler. For $9 we expected a little more and would have preferred it served on a plate instead but it was good.
We will definitely be coming back with the intent to try some of the other dishes but it will be hard not to order the ribs.
