The owner and staff are genuine and delightful, and the entire establishment is an antidote to national chain cafés. ToS kindly hosts and supports a number of groups and societies which meet at the venue due to a thoroughly-deserved outstanding reputation. Due to the exterior tables and serving rooms on three floors, each member of the service team clocks-up, on average, 19km of steps during a typical working day. It is the healthiest place to work in Shrewsbury.
According to the British Meteorological Society it is unlikely to be gloriously sunny when you visit, but don’t despair if it is inappropriate to sit outside, as the beauty is in the upper rooms. Proceed to the ground-floor service counter and ascend the stairs at the back to the olde worlde, oak-panelled room, overlooking Mardol. It’s the hidden tearoom that will make your visit to Shrewsbury memorable.
Take-away deserts are popular and unique with a special line in meringues and local, one-off delicacies that jump out at you. Why, only today, there was a ‘Biscoff chocolate blondie’ with my name written all over it.
Background music in a café is always slightly too loud or too quiet or talking in a busy venue can be difficult. Not so at ToS. I don’t know what mystical setting they use, but it is perfect. Maybe the oak-panelling acts as studio-like frequency soundproofing.
It is always a pleasure to visit Taste of Shrewsbury.
On this occasion service was a little slow but everything fine once order had been taken. Would recommend to all and will definitely return.
This was also the only venue in Shrewsbury that allowed me to make a booking rather than relying on walk-ins, which was a huge plus. The host even arranged for us to have The Loft room, giving us privacy, space to relax, and the ability to play our own music. A brilliant touch.
The genuine kindness from the staff and the personable service were truly exceptional. And the food — wow. Absolutely outstanding, generous portions, and paired beautifully with fantastic mulled wine and great coffee. We loved every moment here and will definitely be returning.
Shrewsbury keeps surprising us in the best possible way. Its independent shops and strong sense of English heritage are something to be proud of. In fact, several people in my group said they now want to move to Shrewsbury simply because of places like this and the uniquely English feel of the town.
Thank you to the entire team — you were incredible!
The welcoming friendly staff, the great coffee, stunning old building ( upstairs) and the breakfast were all absolutely great.
Great vegetarian and vegan options for us.
Well worth a visit.
We’ll be back next time we’re in Shrewsbury
