Social Profile:

An authentic Japanese restaurant, located in the corner of Old Todd’s road and Codell Drive, across Ayame Japanese Market and next to Ziyan Salon. Our Nigiri and roll sushi are made with fresh fish from Japanese fish market. We have a variety of Ramen soup, and each flavor is very authentic and traditional Japanese taste. We have several appetizers on the menu, such as all time favorites Gyoza and Agedashi-tofu, but come try our one of a kind, specialty appetizers as well! Can’t say enough about our drink selections from beer, variety of hot and cold sakes, fruity chu-hai, and wine!

My partner and I first went to Michikusa to celebrate an anniversary, and now it’s one of our favorite restaurants and our go-to place for any special occasion or just any ol’ time we’re craving an amazing meal! (Seriously, I love this place so much, I’m tearing up just writing about it….I’m such a fan, I once made oversized replica Michikusa-brand chopsticks as part of a Halloween costume?? See attached picture! I’ve tried to draft this review several times over the years, BUT TODAY IS THE DAY!!!) Michikusa has a bit of a “secret treasure” vibe, based on the space’s location in a tucked-away lil office-park-looking area. Still, the interior of the restaurant is very modern, with simple seating options, minimalist décor, and vivid wall art. The food and service are, without a doubt, the greatest highlights of this place: everything is prepared by professional, highly-skilled chefs (honestly, the food is presented like artwork, so yes, artist-chefs), the main server/host is an actual hero (*we’d like to make him the godfather of our future children!?! ); and every dish presents the best of authentic Japanese cuisine. You can’t go wrong with ANY of the sushi rolls, but in my opinion, the Dragon Roll is *lifechanging.* If you prefer a ramen dish, the Spicy Miso Katsu Ramen is outstanding, and they have a board with numerous specials. Ample parking; sushi bar and small-group seating options; a memorable, fantastic local restaurant!!!

Sushi is tasty and reasonably priced. Service was good but a bit slow for a sushi place possibly due to staff shortage. Will visit again to try the specials. This is an authentic Japanese sushi restaurant.

This is the best sushi I’ve had in Lexington, and probably the best Japanese meal I’ve had overall in the last 2 years. The nightly specials menu (on a random Monday!) had over two dozen items, and they all sounded intriguing: We got the salmon skin salad and the grilled eggplant, both were incredible. I suspect there were many treasures hiding on this menu, I plan to return and explore further. Fantastic experience.

Fantastic! The most authentic Japanese restaurant in Lexington! I am so excited that someone told me about this place. Honestly, I want to try their whole menu. Tonight I had the pork belly eggplant appetizer, a drunken shrimp roll and a pair of otoro – it was worth every penny.

We went for lunch on a Saturday and enjoyed it very much. It’s a small, low key shop that feels authentic and offers some dishes, like Oyakodon, that you rarely find on menus anywhere. The Oyakodon and the sushi we ordered were all tasty and reasonably priced. This will now be a regular spot for us.

Chill, minimal atmosphere. Our server was the kindest man! He was very friendly. Fish was fresh and we like the selection on their specials board. My favorite was the curry udon and the pork belly eggplant. Everything was pretty tasty. The beef tataki was unexpectedly expensive $14 for 5 thin slices of beef. It didn’t feel like it was any special type of beef, so that was a little disappointing. The food came out a little slow (there was 3 tables including us at the time)and the price was slightly higher than average sushi places. I would dine in again and try something new.

Solid meal at a low key restaurant! The tempura udon/soba tasted fine, light, and clean. It was just a little overpriced for udon soup in my opinion!

What a great hidden gem! The sushi was fresh and portion sizes were reasonable. One of the best Japanese restaurants in Lexington. The restaurant is a little hard to find since it’s in more of a residential neighborhood.

This was my first time here. I’ve been meaning to try this place out.
I had:
The grilled squid.
The tempura.
The tonkotsu ramen.
Their miso soup.
Their side salad.
A few samples of nigiri.

Let’s start with the miso, it’s warm and flavorful, silky and just the right amount of tangy, delicious. The salad is simple… But the tricky ginger dressing is amazing, fresh, crisp, and with the perfect balance of sweet, sour and tangy, not overpowering like most other versions of this. I could seriously spoon this.

I don’t particularly love squid, but whenever I try out a new Japanese restaurant, I pay attention to three things in particular, their rice, their tempura and their squid. Squid is tricky to cook… At Michikusa they got it right. The squid was well cooked, with the right amount of chew and snappy. The sauce was delicate with just a hint of spicy, perfect!

The tempura was tasty and crunchy, though a bit on the oily side, probably the oil wasn’t hot enough!

The ramen was OK. With a few tweaks it could be vastly improved. The Ajitsuke Tamago (Egg) was just a hard boiled egg, and it didn’t look like it had been marinated. The broth was smooth and tasty, but it lacked a bit in body and flavor, I’d have loved to try adding a bit of bacon fat… At first I was a bit annoyed about the soba noodles, I prefer springy noodles in my ramen but it works. The meat was cut a bit too thick, and it was not really tender, the flavor was lacking depth, just boring. I’d much rather have had a buttery smooth piece of chashu (go check out Mirin in Louisville, that’s the best I’ve found!). Also, it made me happy that they had white pepper! If you have never had white pepper in your ramen, you’ve been doing it wrong all along! Trust me!

The sushi, the quality of the fish was amazing. Both the salmon and the tuna tasted great! Fresh, buttery smooth and flavorful. The rice however, left a lot to be desired. At first I thought the rice was undercooked, however, later on when I went to order a bit to go (for my wife), I was told that they were out of rice (yet they were nice enough to cook some for me, thank you!). So that tells me that the rice they may have used for my sushi may have been from the bottom of the pot. Which would explain why it was so heavy on the vinegar and “grainy”.

Overall a great experience! It’s a small, cozy place, it was lively and everybody, especially our server Jackie, was friendly and quick to serve!.

The pricing is on point, with the sushi being on the high side, considering that the bites are small.

I’ll definitely come again, and hopefully I can add a star to my review.

Thank you!

Had a great time meeting a friend here while passing through town. Tried the short ribs, yellowtail, uni, toro, and the oysters. Everything really well balanced and delicious. Nothing disappointed, but nothing blew my mind either… but the crab claws were so good.
