We ordered a lot to try as much as possible. Scallion waffle, shrimp toast, rangoon, jian-BLT, crispy shell-on shrimp, egg foo young, steak frites, and rice cakes; and there wasn’t a single miss. Portions are generous and perfect for sharing. The scallion waffle with sambal honey butter was the clear standout and worth returning for on its own. The deconstructed rangoon was incredible, the rice cakes were a great fusion of Asian and pasta flavors, and the steak frites were cooked perfectly. The egg foo young and jian-BLT are instant classics.
I recently traveled through Asia and was craving these flavors, and Agnes & Sherman nailed that balance of familiar yet elevated. Cocktails were excellent, service was outstanding, and this will absolutely be my go-to spot whenever I’m in Houston. Huge shoutout to the entire staff, especially Lisa and Chef Nick—thank you for a five-star meal. Can’t wait to come back for brunch.
Overall, most of the food tasted very good! Pandan ice cream itself is great, the coconut whipped cream overpowered the ice cream imo.
While we really enjoyed the food, we probably won’t be returning because the menu feels limited, and the other items didn’t interest us enough to come back. However, I would definitely recommend trying this place at least once.
Their menu has a variety of different classic American dishes, such as burgers, BLTs, Cajun food, Tex-Mex, and more, and blends it with a variety of dynamic Asian flavors from Korean to Taiwanese to Vietnamese, showcasing a “fusion within a fusion,” that reflect their diverse culinary backgrounds.
The dishes I tried were savory scallion waffle, chicken caesar salad wrap, and egg foo young. The savory scallion waffle was my favorite and was a food mixture of sweet and savory with the sambal honey butter. The chicken caesar wrap was more on the oily side but very crispy. I did wish it came with a sauce to dip in, as it felt like it was missing something. The egg foo young was slightly saltier than I expected but a good combination of flavors, and I thought it was pretty good.
After living in San Francisco for some time, the diner is very reminiscent of SF with a Houston mix. I really love the interior, and I think it’s a great place if you are stuck in a rut and want to try something different and new that you can’t really find in other places in Houston.
Our server was excellent. He was very honest with recommendations and very patient as we tried to figure out what to order. It did take some time to get water refills and to get our check at the end, but otherwise, it was a great experience.
The food is so good! A great fusion spin on Asian cuisine. We started out with the savory scallion waffle and everyone agreed that we should have gotten another one. The food then came out as it was ready. We had the Taiwanese disco fries, which were also really good. The Rangoon is a deconstructed crab rangoon and also very good as a dip. Though, we could have used more wonton chips.
The cheeseburger fried rice tasted just like a big mac. It tasted even better as leftovers the next day. The General Tso boy was also really good and the beef on the dip was also nice and tender. The BBQ club though was another favorite and I was surprised at how good a club could be with Chinese pork.
For drinks, I had the Dr. Wong and the Miss Lee and both were really good. My husband really liked the Big Red Bean until they ran out of it.
The atmosphere is casual and fun. Very family friendly and good for groups, though they don’t have many large tables so recommend a reservation.
Street parking only; it was easy to find a spot right out front.
Being half Chinese, this place hits home. It’s the perfect infusion of Asian influence into classic American diner food.
Only complaint was that they held back too much with the Chinese mustard on the Taiwanese Beef Dip sandwich.
Things to improve:
– Description of items on the menu need improvement. Two of the dishes we ordered came out not as we expected.
– A restaurant should have spoons. We were told they dont have metal spoons when we asked for the fried rice.
– Dessert came with spoons but they were as big as serving spoons! Ridiculous!
*Savory Scallion Waffle – this was very different yet tasty
*Breakfast Bing – this was ok and an unexpected form. It came looking like a pizza. The pancake was like a crispy tortilla. There was not much chorizo on it but had a lot of cubed potatoes. The egg thats mentioned on the menu is a SUPER thin layer on top of the crunchy tortilla like pancake.
*Cheeseburger Fried Rice – tastes like a Big Mac! Very yummy. I wish we had gotten it with the egg but my son didnt want it.
*Crab Thai Omlette – this was my favorite dish! This was delicious! We were surprised that it came on top a huge bed of rice. In made the omlette look much bigger than it was.
*Sundae – this was yummy with lots of different flavors and textures. Hard shell chocolate, pandan ice cream, shredded coconut, crushed peanuts, coconut whipped cream.
We decided to skip appetizers this time and order multiple entrées instead, but our server, Nia, surprised us with a few appetizers from the kitchen anyway. It was an unexpected and genuinely appreciated gesture that set a welcoming tone for the evening.
The first dish to arrive was the chilled noodles. It’s a simple dish on paper, but it was done extremely well. The flavors were balanced, the texture was just right, and it felt refreshing without being bland. It has easily become something we’ll order every time.
The rangoon came out next in a deconstructed format. If you enjoy sweet and savory combinations, this dish works beautifully. The pepper jelly adds a noticeable sweetness that plays nicely with the richness of the crab mixture, and the wonton chips were crisp and sturdy. There was also a generous amount of crab in the dip, which made the dish feel substantial.
The cheeseburger fried rice was one of the most memorable plates of the night. It genuinely tasted like a cheeseburger, down to the sauce, which reminded me of a Big Mac in the best way. It actually made me hope they eventually add a proper burger to the menu, because I would absolutely order it.
The rice cakes, paired with a spicy beef ragu and topped with parmesan, were another standout. The texture was similar to gnocchi, with a pleasant chew, and the ragu brought depth along with a noticeable kick of heat.
We also ordered the beef fajita chow fun. The noodles were well-cooked, the beef was flavorful, and the fajita vegetables added a nice contrast. It had a good level of spice that added energy to the dish without overpowering it.
For dessert, we shared a sundae featuring pandan ice cream. The pandan had a fragrant, slightly nutty flavor that paired really well with the generous amount of peanuts. The contrast of creamy and crunchy made it a strong finish to the meal.
Nia deserves special recognition. She was attentive, knowledgeable about the menu, and handled the table with ease. The pacing of the meal felt natural, and she was very personable. Service like that makes a noticeable difference.
After four visits, what stands out most is that the restaurant continues to deliver. The menu is creative without feeling overdone, and the execution has been consistently solid. Agnes and Sherman has quickly become a place we return to with confidence, and it’s exciting to see a newer restaurant already operating at this level.
I would understand being rushed if we were walk-ins, but for a reservation made ahead of time, this was disappointing and really affected the experience. We came specifically to enjoy the restaurant fully, not to feel like we were on a timer.
One of my friends at the table is a GM at another restaurant, and her company actually sends her to different spots to try the food and overall experience. That’s the main reason we chose Agnes & Sherman.
Overall, the food was a 3/5 decent but nothing memorable. The service was a 2/5. The only person who really stood out was the food runner. She was great and brought some personality to the table. The hostess seemed annoyed when she approached our table and asked if we were done but we informed her that we ordered desserts. Our waiter also didn’t check on us very often.
The restaurant has potential, but the combination of feeling rushed and the lackluster service made it hard to enjoy the experience the way we hoped.
We ordered the Savory Scallion Waffles ( least favorite we barley had any – very dry – the chicken was okay ), Rangoon ( good ) , crab omelette ( it was the only thing we could enjoy ), the fresh juices were good. We also had some ceviche looking tho g . Don’t recall the name , but it was meh.We were going to have desert but didn’t see anything on the menu that seemed appealing. Surprisingly ,it was very busy , but it assuming it’s because it’s new . We did feel very rushed to put in our order as soon as we sat down . I don’t think I will be back .
