Enjoyed our time in the Prairie dog. Handy location on way back from days out. Loved the ideas behind it. Wished our accommodation was nearer so i could have spend more time in here. Food and beer was excellent. Staff explained how everything worked, nice atmosphere. Took some photos but they don’t do it justice, wasn’t able to use the outside due to rain but that did look a nice spot for a drink too.

The Ultimate Gathering Spot for Unplugged Joy!
We were thrilled to attend a pre-wedding gathering for a family wedding at Prairie Dog Taproom, and it turned what could have been a hectic crowd into the most seamless, laughter-filled night—pure magic in the heart of the Black Hills. From the get-go, chatting with Michael, the owner, felt like catching up with an old friend; his easygoing vibe set the tone for the whole evening.
The genius here? Their wristband system paired with self-service taps for beer and wine—pure brilliance for wrangling a big group without a single soul standing in line, fending off thirst. We kept the pours flowing effortlessly while diving into what has to be the BEST pizza in South Dakota: crispy crusts loaded with fresh toppings that vanished faster than you can say “slice of heaven.” (Pro tip: Go for the specialty pies—they’re game-changers.)

But it’s not just about the eats and drinks; this place is a playground for every age with loads of games for everyone. What blew us away? In a world glued to screens, no one here was scrolling. Phones stayed pocketed as folks bonded over stories with friends and family, the room buzzing with real, unfiltered joy. Even the littlest guests were in bliss mode, lost in kid-friendly nooks that had them giggling non-stop.

And the hidden gem? Venture out back to their expansive creekside oasis—beautifully lit with string lights twinkling like stars, the gentle rush of water as your soundtrack. It’s the stuff of magic-hour memories. Top it off with frequent live music from killer local acts that had everyone swaying, and you’ve got a venue that’s equal parts chill and electric.

If you’re planning a get-together (or just crashing one) in Hill City, skip the ordinary—head straight to Prairie Dog Taproom. It’s where crowds become communities, and we’ll be back for round two before you know it!

I need an option for 10 stars. Do not sleep on Prairie Dog. The atmosphere is great, owners and staff are over the top friendly, but the food is the real star. Pizza and cheesesteak were both phenomenal. Hands down some of the best food in the Black Hills.

Ok so this is a Gem of a place! It’s what you make of it because it’s so many experiences in one. We sat inside and used the bracelet to taste many beers & wines at the taps. We also had a fantastic lunch( I had bison dog). So delicious!
Then there’s the lovely outdoor setting which can have live music check the schedule.
In the gift shop you’ll find their wine amongst other nice items.
The comfortable seating has a wide variety of options. To top it off there are also lawn games you can take outside to play.
A definite MUST STOP here !

I’ve had a lot of pizza around South Dakota, and this one honestly blew me away. From the first bite, you could tell it was different. The crust had that perfect crisp to it but still had great flavor—not just a crunchy base, but something you actually enjoy on its own. The sauce was dialed in too, not too sweet, not too heavy, just really well balanced.

It didn’t feel overhyped or fancy—just straight-up really, really good pizza done right. Easily the best I’ve had in South Dakota, and I’ll definitely be going back.

As tourists visiting we stopped by and chose this place for a quick drink and bite to eat. First off the taproom is always a great and fun way to try a variety of drinks! The venue and outdoor venue was great for hanging out! Family friendly for sure!

The best part though were the hot dogs! 11/10! We had multiple of each one and everyone raved! Overall, great service, great atmosphere, great drinks and great food!

If there are restaurants/taprooms in heaven that excel in food, drink, atmosphere, and music, Prairie Dog Taproom makes the cut and checks all the boxes. The outdoor dining area, with picnic tables and rocking chairs by a babbling creek, creates a serene, zen-like experience. While waiting for our food, we enjoyed a quick game of bags. Ordering through an on-line menu accessed via barcode was convenient, and the menu, reminiscent of a food truck selection, offered simple yet satisfying choices. We loved the Yankee (bison burger), General Custer (bison brisket), bourbon beans, and Prairie Dog Dipper. The “Pour My Beer” setup is a brilliant idea, allowing you to control the amount and pay by the ounce. The taproom boasts an excellent selection of craft beers, and my wife and I particularly enjoyed the hard apple cider and Scottish ale. Our host, Ryan, was friendly and knowledgeable. Located between Rapid City and Mount Rushmore on US-385, Prairie Dog Taproom is definitely worth a stop.

Upon entering this place for the first time, I was greeted by an attractive young hostess named Haley. She explained how the tap wall works and made suggestions based on my preferences. I was impressed by the food quality. The pizza was excellent. They make their own dough with imported Italian flour. They make the sauce fresh from real tomatoes. I will definitely be back.

Great place for dinner, drinks, and activities! Large spaces to sit comfortably and eat. Pay per ounce style drinks where you pour however much or little you want.

Food was absolutely amazing! Flavorful and extremely reasonable prices. Outdoor area feels like a nice backyard with yard games, a creek, and a stage for outdoor music.

Drink selection was plentiful and has everything for everyone’s taste.

Newly renovated, family friendly, right off the main road, and extremely friendly staff! Highly recommend stopping here for extremely reasonably priced food! Gourmet hot dog with great topping for $6 to $8 dollars!
