Welcoming the newest restaurant addition to Heritage Center in Annandale!
I was so excited about the opening of this Salvadorean spot and try their food, truly lived the expectations in our first visit.
We tried the cheese pupusa, big enough to share and lots of cheese (you can see how it’s melting from the masa!) and they bring you a pot with their staple salsa which I love! The encurtido arrived with little vinegar/pickle juice/liquid, but I think it’s the reason they bring the salsa on the side so you can adjust it to your liking. I was surprised with the Baleada (I added shrimp), the homemade tortilla was my favorite thing, as well the way the fresh crema blended together with the refried beans! Honestly could’ve just eaten it without any salsa and I would still enjoy it!
My husband had the pan con gallina, is a sandwich made with a stewed chicken with veggies, a hard boil egg and some radishes for crunch and pickled beets to cut the creaminess. The dish came with some sort of thick consomé or gravy with some chicken meat, which we guessed was to be either drizzled on top or to be dipped (I guess is the way you have a French onion dip or quesabirria). He liked the flavors of the chicken, plus the bread was fresh.
It is not pictured, but we ordered a budín to go, which is described as a banana bread pudding, but it barely tasted banana on the cake but the “jam” on top!
We loved the food and we are so pleased to have a family owned restaurant! The place is very clean and bright, lots of room for bigger parties as well some high top seats if solo dining. The prices seem reasonable for the quality and quantity of the food you get!
We will be coming back!

Excellent experience at La Pupusería El Familiar. From the moment we arrived, the service was great, especially from a lady who served me at 5:00m on Friday 30, who was very kind, attentive, and made us feel welcome.
The food was excellent, fresh, and full of authentic flavor. The service was definitely better than at Falls Church, which made the experience even better.
We will definitely be coming back.

It is really good—I been buying food since it first opened BUT lately they been serving less of a portion for what the price is not worth it at least for the take out which it is significantly less then it used to be, plus I been ordering “fries” and they’d changed the container for the take out which I like it BUT I been finding those small cockroaches which it makes me wonder if they keep the restaurant “clean” or if they check if there is any insect inside the container or below it so that it won’t get inside the food.
