I love the tru island experience in this place. Reminds you of good old Puerto Rico. Good food and a very humble atmosphere. It’s one of the remaining spots here in Newark that makes you want to come in again and eat here.

Went here for breakfast and we are coming from 35 minutes away just to try their Puerto Rican breakfast and this place did not disappoint what so ever. The food came out fast and hot. We had (which l’II picture) two coffees, oatmeal (avena), ham and cheese sandwich (with the works) and a breakfast platter. This reminded me sooooo much of breakfast from the island. We enjoyed all of it and we will definitely come back out to try lunch & dinner food as well. But we wanted auth pr breakfast and that’s exactly what we go. Not many around like this.
I wish they would update the restaurant a little bit, it’s a bit outdated and it has so much more potential for a nicer ambiance.

Was looking for a local puerto rican spot for coffee and maybe a bite.

Waited about 15 minutes for the coffee I ordered. The coffee was watered down. The food showed up 10 minutes later and was quite greasy.

As I started to eat, a cockroach skittered across the counter near me. I smashed it but it kept going guts and all! I smashed it one more time with my napkin and then discreetly brought it to the attention of the guy behind the counter. He casually picked it up and tossed it in the garbage and just shrugged his shoulders. Didn’t even bother to clean the spot where the guts were still visible.

Eat here at your own (health) risk.

Reading these reviews brought tears to my eyes. My grandparents Elena & Porfirio were the original owners and knowing that our good friend Leo is continuing to keep our N.Newark family happy and full is a wonderful feeling. Grandma’s Sancocho will forever live on thanks to you all! Many blessings to the great El Guame and let’s continue to support our locals!

The pork is delicious! Never dry… The rice and beans very good as well. Not overcooked or undercooked. The only Spanish food restaurant I go to whenever I’m in North Newark. I highly recommend going here. The service is excellent as always. I like the staff

Really love this place. Hidden gem in north Newark. I come here on saturdays religiously for their “sancocho”, it’s a thick plantain based soul with pig feet and cassava and other yummy things . It is only prepared on weekends and you have to come early because it’s usually sold out by 10-11am. Leo the owner is such a pleasant host, although the place is very small, he always makes you feel like family. They also have very affordable hungry man breakfasts and they make a mean mofongo, it’s a thick fried plantain ball stuffed with your meat of choice, my go to is chicharron (pork belly). I always order a cola champagne to wash down my delicious food.
