China Palace is a solid neighborhood spot for classic Chinese comfort food. The portions are generous, and everything comes out hot and fresh. The orange chicken has that crispy, saucy balance people look for, and the fried rice is savory and filling without being too heavy. It’s straightforward, affordable, and easy — perfect for a quick weeknight takeout or a casual dine-in meal. Nothing fancy, just dependable flavors that satisfy the craving.

Today I ordered using the online ordering available for China Palace. The first sms message I received gave me the order number. The second gave me the ETA for my order. When no one showed up after a 99 minute wait , I called their number. A short message stated they are closed for Chinese New Year. So now I need to contact my credit card co. To get my money back. Perhaps I should be grateful that I dodged a bullet.

Under the shadow of the Thorndale Red Line, there’s a specific kind of Chicago grit. It’s the sound of the ‘L’ rattling the windows and the smell of cold Lake Michigan air mixing with the intoxicating, oily perfume of a wok fired up to the gates of hell. This is China Palace.
It’s not a place for the faint of heart or those seeking a “concept.” It’s a storefront that’s seen it all, serving up the kind of unapologetic, heavy-duty comfort that keeps a neighborhood breathing.
I started with the pot stickers. They’re thick-skinned, resilient little parcels of joy, seared on the bottom with a crunch that echoes in your molars, giving way to a pork filling that’s savory enough to make you weep. They don’t apologize for being exactly what they are: a greasy, glorious middle finger to fine dining.
Then came the shrimp lo mein. In the wrong hands, this is a soggy, uninspired mess. Here? It’s a masterclass in the utilitarian. The noodles have that essential wok hei—that breath of the dragon—carrying the char of the pan and the sweetness of shrimp that actually taste like the sea. It’s slippery, salty, and deeply satisfying.
I’ll be honest with you. After three bites of this, I found myself leaning back, staring at the Red Line tracks, and reconsidering my entire geopolitical worldview. If this is the standard, maybe we should just pack it in. Based on this meal alone, I’m ready to let China win the trade war. If the terms of surrender include a lifetime supply of these noodles, where do I sign the treaty?
It’s fast, it’s cheap, and it’s soul-shakingly good. It’s the real deal.

Very delicious food! The orange chicken and fried rice were superb. Incredibly kind, generous and flexible staff. They made accommodations for a large order. Would recommend.

Something told me that it might not be the best idea to check out this place, but venture forth I did. China Palace is your typical hood Chinese food served with an extra helping “I couldn’t care less” from the staff. Walking in the place is a dump. Every surface is sticky, there’s food on the tables and chairs, grease spots on the floor, etc. I ordered my usual item to test the waters which is the orange chicken dinner special. Upon asking the cashier if it came with a soda, he spoke unintelligible words. After trying to understand him, I came to the conclusion that he was trying to explain that the specials come with either an egg roll or drink. When I asked to include the drink as extra he proceeded to roll his eyes as if it was that much difficult to just add a drink to the order.

My order was ready in just a few minutes which isn’t a good sign. They serve the usual large portions for under $12. While I was waiting I ended up cleaning the table myself after I realized there was sauce spilled on it (see pic for how dirty the cloth was after just a small wipe down.) The soda I ordered was lukewarm…not a great start. The egg roll is your typical egg roll made with peanut butter. Crispy, but there’s definitely better rolls out there.

The orange chicken started out a step above the dreaded “orange sponge.” It was piping hot, crispy in some areas and had some spice to it. Still, it was just another orange sponge once the ridiculous amount of sauce soaked in. The fried rice is definitely over seasoned yet trended towards good.

After just a few bites my stomach started going so I got out of there. They definitely need to do better.

2 out of 5 stars

The lunch plate at $9 was a good value but there was a lot of flavor lacking. The fried rice was too overcooked so I’d opt for white rice. The eggroll that comes with the plate was terrible too. The orange chicken was the highlight as it was very good.

Your basic neighborhood Chinese restaurant. Located in a small strip mall, there is free parking. You are able to dine in. As I waited for my food, several people came in to pick up their order. There is a good selection on the menu with lunch and dinner specials. My order did take a bit of time. The food is still hot by the time I got home. The are ingredients fresh and plentiful. Glad I was able to assemble my sweet and sour chicken, which kept it from being soggy, I would have appreciated a few more veggies, but it was tasty. The shrimp fried rice and shrimp egg foo young were very good. The Pad Thai pictured was ok. As the neighborhood Chinese place, I will be back.

The menu is easy to read and lots of options. The owner was super helpful and above and beyond. It’s a small carryout place with two tables so he told us we could sit in our car and he brought the food out to our car. Five star service And a very nice local restaurant that I’ll be coming back to.
