Tycoon Flats is another one of those places that comes up in ‘best San Antonio burger’ conversations or lists. And after trying it I thought it was… okay. I’m a sucker for variety so I got the specialty sliders trio. Perhaps I should’ve stuck with more of a simple burger but what’s life without mixing it up sometimes (but not too much… come on now). My trio included the fried avocado, BBQ bacon, and roasted garlic burgers. I did appreciate the creative specialty burger offerings – and there were a few more I would’ve been intrigued by if I was into blue cheese. (I’ve tried to like that feet-tasting funk but can’t do it.) In the pictures on the menu, the burger patties have a from-the-freezer look to me, but in real life the patties looked freshly handmade. I don’t know if that’s some weird attempt to underpromise but I was pleasantly surprised. Now, everyone of these sliders had some good flavor but they were all dry. Not West Texas tumbleweed dry, but noticeably dry. Maybe Medina Lake dry. Dry enough that condiments and toppings couldn’t save it. If you’ve learned anything along the burger trail, it should be that juicy = flavor. So these get a C for flavor. Unfortunately the service was right in line with the flavor with infrequent visits to the table, tea that was thrown out before closing, and waiting for a check. It’s a cool spot but I can’t say anything is drawing me back. Cheers to Tycoon Flats for coming up with some off-the-beaten-path signature burgers!

I then stumbled upon Tycoon Flats where the Purple Garlic used to be. I said why not! The food was good and the service was great! Antonio had amazing timing, he knew the menu and was extremely friendly!
The playlist was amazing
I’ll be back!
This was my first time bringing my wife, and we both ordered the specialty sliders deal. I forgot to mention to her that their “sliders” are actually just regular-sized burgers, so we ended up with six full burgers between us, hahahaha. All the food was above expectations, and every app and side we tried was amazing.
It’s not the cheapest spot, but it’s absolutely worth it. Honestly, each sliders deal could easily feed three people.
Main food: Apple Bacon, Bacon Balsamic, Feta Cranberry, Benedict, Fried Avocado, and Tex-Mex sliders.
Sides & apps: Fried mushrooms, fried pickles, and fries.
The ranch was spot-on, and my Arnold Palmer was excellent.
Now for the food. They have tons of unique takes on burgers on the menu. As I say in previous reviews when it comes to burgers I usually get the with a cheese plain and dry…maybe some bacon. Only because if you can’t wow me with just the beef anything you put on it is only gonna help a little…just my opinion of course. To be honest, it was a good burger. I got the Flats Cheeseburger with bacon. It’s a thicker patty at 1/2 lbs so it’s a big boy. Though it was juicy and the bun/bacon was really good the burger needed some love. Felt like it was minimally seasoned so I had to put some salt on it. It was good just need a little more. The fries on the other hand were beautifully seasoned and delicious. My old lady got the fried avocado burger though she enjoyed it she thought the same as me about the beef. The chicken tenders were really good as well. At the end of the day I had a great time and I will definitely come back again and try other things from the menu. If you happened to be in the area come check it out.
Our server, Amber, greeted us immediately upon sitting. We ordered Spicy Bloody Mary’s made with Tito’s. Yum! We then ordered a basket of fried pickles and a basket of Tater tots. Both fabulous. Tater tots nice and crispy and the fried pickles were thinly sliced with excellent flavor. We added a hot pastrami sandwich to round it out. It melds the flavors wonderfully.
Excellent service. Nice ambiance outside. Surprisingly cool in the Texas heat as the owners had the foresight to install lots of fans.
Definitely will come again.
