Social Profile:

If you are local to Bristol you probably will have noticed this established restaurant had closed its doors a couple years ago. The business had a long successful run of over 25 years until 2018 when the restaurant owner, Raj, decided it was time for a fresh new look. After some unexpected set backs, The Raj Mahal is back in business for late 2020. Raj embarked on his restaurant industry career in London, back in the late 70’s. Always aiming to please his customers, he built a great reputation and grew strong connections, which ultimately led him to Bristol in 1992 where the Raj Mahal began.

Airy dining room with modern carved booths, for classic Indian curries, tikkas and birianis.

RayMahal has clearly stood the test of time, having been around for 35 years, and after my visit, I can absolutely see why. From the moment I walked in, I was met with warmth and genuine hospitality. The staff were incredibly friendly, attentive without being intrusive, and made sure everything was just right throughout the evening.

Onto the food, because that’s where RayMahal truly shines.

No Indian meal is complete without poppadoms, and RayMahal does them just right. They were crisp, fresh, and served with a generous tray of dips and sauces. The standout for me was the mango chutney, sweet and tangy, and the perfect complement to the crunchy poppadoms. It’s the kind of simple starter that sets the tone for a great meal.

For the main course, I had the lamb pasanda, a sweet and creamy coconut based curry that was absolutely delicious. The sauce had a beautiful balance, rich without being too heavy, with that subtle sweetness from the coconut that paired perfectly with the tender lamb. The meat was cooked to perfection, soft, juicy, and full of flavour in every bite.

The rice was fluffy, fragrant, and cooked just right, not oily or clumpy, which is always a good sign. I also ordered the chilli cheese naan, which brought a nice kick of spice and a cheesy richness that paired wonderfully with both the pasanda and the chicken tikka.

The chicken tikka was another highlight. It’s a dish that’s often served too dry in other places, but here it was juicy and full of flavour. The smoky tandoor seasoning was spot on, and it worked beautifully with the chilli cheese naan.

Even the toilets were clean, and to me, that always says a lot about a restaurant. It shows they take cleanliness seriously across the board, not just in the dining area.

All in all, RayMahal exceeded expectations. The combination of friendly service, high quality food, expertly cooked dishes, and a clean, welcoming atmosphere makes it easy to see why this place has been a favourite for decades.

I will definitely be coming back, and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend RayMahal for a work do or a group meal. It’s a gem of a restaurant that clearly takes pride in every detail.

Very professional service and great food!
The restaurant was extremely clean and good very high quality. I had the chicken tikka and my partner had lamb tikka masala, both extremely tasty. Wasn’t super busy on a Thursday night and is quite tucked away in begbrook so would be easy to miss but definitely deserves more custom!!

I have been eating at and getting take aways from this restaurant regularly for at least 10 years. The food is excellent and highly consistent, neither is it expensive. The service is super polite, friendly and personal. I simply cannot believe that anyone would leave a bad review for this restaurant.
The best Dhansak in Bristol!
Honestly, it is worth travelling for this restaurant. If you normally get a take away from these guys, try eating in. The nan bread is much more crispy.
Keep up the excellent work guys x

Been to this place before and it was great about two years ago. Now it seems to have gone downhill. Food wasn’t nice, there seemed like there was just no flavour, everything, and i mean everything tasted so heavy with tomato. I’ve worked in restaurants before and tasted alot of Indians. I had high hopes going here again but it really let me down.

The lamb biriyani was absolutely shocking. Tasteless. It tasted like pilau rice with some lamb pieces, thats it. The lamb was dry, it stuck to the roof of my mouth. It looks dry, like it had been left to air out for a couple days (see photos) they did remove the price of the lamb biriyani and the manager was friendly but after this experience its a shame that i wont be returning.

Had a delivery from here, Portion sizes were good, but the food quality was mixed and not good. Sag aloo was really tasty, but the rogan josh was quite bland. Biryani was mostly just rice with 3 pieces of very dry & overcooked chicken.

Big shame, as we expected more based on the reviews.

Our first visit. One of the best Indian restaurants we have been too. Fantastic food and they catered the low/no spice level for our young children too. Lovely service, clean and welcoming. WiFi available too which is fab bonus for the kids!

We’ve been going to Raj Mahal for years, even Raj Mahal City when that was going. We’re generally very happy with our food from Raj, however, tonight wasn’t great. The onion bhajis were literally half the size they usually are. The chicken in both of our curries were very small chunks and chewy and both of our sauces with our meals were very watery and not thick as usual. Our curry before was similar and we thought it was just a bad night. But two in a row now and we’re left feeling pretty disappointed.
