Kao Sook Thai Cuisine in Scotts Valley had a rough night for takeout, with service issues overshadowing the food.

Arrived at 5:25 PM on a Tuesday night with no tables available upon arrival, so we opted ordered takeout: pad see ew, pumpkin curry, and fresh spring rolls. Rica took the order, estimating 20-25 minutes; we left at 5:46 PM and returned at 6:07 PM.

Phnom asked for my name to check on our food at 6:12pm but never got back to us. Checking in again at 6:23 PM, Rica said the noodles and curry were ready, just waiting on spring rolls. At 6:40 PM, I asked Phnom to cancel the rolls and refund the tip. He gave a receipt saying it was removed, but no, only the spring rolls had been removed, the tip was still there. Going back led to confusion, with manager Mo first accusing non-payment despite Rica confirming the original order from over an hour earlier.

Phnom had refunded the full bill by accident; Mo apologized a lot, comped the two mains, and said no need to repay. Spring rolls went to later customers, showing bad prioritization.

Key Strengths:
– Mo stepped up with accountability.

Areas for Improvement:
– Takeout took over 75 minutes while dine-in got priority.
– Fix tip refunds and accuracy, other reviews mention similar slips.
– Improve communication between staff and kitchen on apps like spring rolls.

Recommendation: Try Thai Heart nearby instead.

The fried rice was 5/5. The spicy red curry was delicious as well. Service was understandably slightly slow due to the sheer number of large takeouts that were also being managed at the same time.

Highly recommend!

We arrived for a late lunch and everyone was STARVING so I didnt get pictures because we dug in as soon as the food arrived. We did the house dumplings, cashew chicken and vegetables, and duck curry. Everything was DELICIOUS. Service was friendly and attentive and the Thai iced coffee was also lovely.

Really good Americanized Thai food. The owners are wonderful people. My favorites were the pad tai and coconut shrimp. The fish cakes were also made fresh that day.

We got the lunch combo specials. Food was okay. I’m from Sacramento and the Thai food out here has treated me so nice! They give you a vegetarian soup thing. Taste like lemon grass and coconut- not sure I liked it to be honest. The coffee is strong and tasty. Service was quick but kinda felt a bit rushed. Not super busy either.

Honestly, I haven’t tried everything on the menu. However, the chicken Pad Thai I have been ordering as of lately is always on point and very inexpensive! The service has always been outstanding even when the establishment had different ownership in the past! You can really taste the tamarind, egg, and while the chicken itself is a tad dry sometimes, you can request it at least medium-spicy and that right there should help. Also, the Pad Thai by default is ‘accidentally gluten-free’ so anyone with gluten issues can more or less rely on this place concerning one of their signature dishes. If unlike myself, you are a majorly reacting celiac who can’t handle any cross-contact under any circumstances, you should definitely notify whoever is taking your order. The good news is they take allergies/intolerances very seriously and definitely seem open and appreciate feedback. This is by far my favorite place to get a reliably amazing Pad Thai for an outstanding price south of the Bay Area!

Good place in the area to stop by and have lunch. Plenty of parking available. We ordered drunken noodles and spicy basil fried with tofu and some Thai tea. Everything tasted fresh and yummy. Plenty of vegetarian options available. Friendly staff, clean space and quick service.

OMG, Angel wings, where have you been all my life? Deep fried stuffed chicken wings with sweet and sour sauce and pickled veggies and you can pretty much eat the whole thing. It’s the best food surprise I’ve had in a long time!! It’s a good serving too, with a little curry rice on the side, it’s a meal.

takeout order

pad kee mao/drunken noodles: wide rice noodles were seriously overcooked, mushy. grave sin for a thai restaurant. ordered on wednesday night so maybe keep in mind that there’s a bad cook that night? tough for me ever to justify ordering from here again based on this

bbq chicken: ample food (1/2 chicken!), but sadly pretty dry and overcooked. provided sauce is too thin to be any help

papaya salad: good enough

fresh spring rolls: comically small. order of two looks like one small spring roll cut in half. good flavor, though

tom yum: spicy, sweet, fragrant. i liked this

An unassuming mom and pop kinda place where the staff is incredibly nice and attentive. Food is definitely very much catered toward Americans, but in this area, you can’t really blame them. Plus sometimes I kind of do crave American Thai food just like how sometimes I crave orange chicken from Panda Express. My meal was a little too salty, but the lunch special was $13.95 – really hard to beat that price anywhere around here.
