After our appetizer, it took at least 30 mins to get our main dishes. Everyone around us ate and finished. And 2 of our 3 dishes came out cold.
We had a reservation right at opening and still had to wait 10+ mins to be seated.
The only thing I wish is that the curry had a little more sauce, but other than that everything was amazing. And they even surprised my boyfriend with a free crème brûlée for his birthday, which was such a sweet touch.
Highly recommend this place if you’re in Maui!
Let’s start strong: the Korean Seafood Pancake. Crispy, packed with seafood, and ridiculously flavorful. It comes quartered, which feels generous—until the first bite. If your party is more than two people, consider ordering a second one preemptively, because “sharing” becomes a myth real fast.
Next up, the ever-faithful Spicy Edamame. Great flavor, but a fair warning: the chili oil makes it a little messy, like your snack is trying to turn into a slip-and-slide. Still worth it.
We tried the Blackened Tuna Roll—beautiful presentation, solid execution, but for us it landed in the “good, not life-changing” category. If you’re used to excellent sushi (NYC-area standards), it’s more “respectable” than “remarkable.” Not bad at all—just didn’t steal the spotlight.
A quick public service announcement: the Hamachi Collar Bone is one of their most popular dishes and it sells out early. We showed up around 6:30pm and it was already gone. If you’re set on it, aim for 5:30pm and move with purpose.
Now—quietly, unexpectedly—the Garlic Noodles. This side dish goes with just about everything and sneaks up on you like a woman you didn’t know you needed in your life. One minute you’re “just trying a bite,” and the next you’re guarding the bowl like it’s your retirement fund. They were so good we genuinely considered ordering a second round. That’s how dangerous they are.
The Garlic Shrimp came through in a big way—good-sized shrimp with a buttery garlic flavor that stayed balanced instead of drowning everything in grease. And then there was the ribeye, cooked perfectly medium, great portion, and loaded with flavor thanks to that shiitake mushroom sauce. Steak plus sunset plus competent cooking is a pretty undefeated combo.
And dessert? The Kā‘anapali Pie is the mic drop: brownie crust, banana, macadamia nut ice cream, whipped cream, caramel, chocolate… basically a dessert that shows up wearing a crown and doesn’t apologize for it. It was A-M-A-Z-I-N-G.
Bottom line: great meal, great service, and a view that does half the flirting for you. Reservations recommended—especially this time of year.
We had the chefs special roll and the fuju (sp) roll. I had a chirashi bowl, he had roasted pork with kimchi mashed potatoes- YUM!!
Excellent service, very friendly!
Valet parking.
They have a great outdoor seating balcony with great views. The interior deco is like a modern Asian / Japanese look that was cool.
Tip* – you can just pull up to the front valet area and let them know you are there for reservations at Japengo and they will provide free parking for you. (Get your ticket validated at the restaurant) and don’t forget to tip your valet!
We had the chicken and the steak.
The steak was the best steak on our entire visit. Super moist and tender. Perfect.
The jadori chicken was tasty, nothing wrong with it but it didn’t impress. We also got the mango prawn salad which could have been more / better.
Clams were good in a white wine garlicky sauce – yum. I was eating this sauce with my spoon at the end. Many dishes were highlighting the shiitake mushrooms and the mushroom side dish was also good.
Service was good, a little slow. We were done with apps and plates taken and waited another 35 minutes for our main course to come out. Seemed a bit long.
We got an amazing dessert there that we think was the best one out of the 4-5 we had around Maui during our stay. It was a layered browny / chocolate cake and ice cream dish and it was very tasty.
We would definitely go back and try more of their dishes. We were bummed we didn’t try the fish instead of the chicken. Next time!
